Chapter 71: An Invitation To Tea

Chapter 71: An Invitation To Tea

I stared at Reagan wondering if he was joking or if he was dead serious but he had this stoic expression on his face that told me that he was actually serious about it, he meant what he said!

I scoffed in disbelief, looking away momentarily before I turned to look at him, hoping that he was going to turn to look at me and tell me that it was a joke but Reagan remained standing, leveling me with a look that was filled with unwavering intensity.

"You are not joking." I whispered the words out to myself more than him but it would seem that Reagan heard me.

"No." He replied, "I wasn’t."

I chuckled but it was one without humor. "Why?" I asked him, "Why would you want me to give up something that...something that I do to help save people’s life?" I asked my voice hoarse and sounding a bit tired.

Reagan exhaled sharply before he looked away from me, "You want me to keep your secret? Then you will swear right here and right now that you will never become a vigilante again." Reagan stated firmly, not willing to go back on his words.

"Do you even know why I became the black knight in the first place?" I asked him as I fought to hold back the tears in my eyes.

"I don’t." Reagan responded, a little bit too quick than I would have liked, not even bothering to think about it. "I don’t and I do not care."

"You are right, you don’t and why should you?" I asked with a sniff, furiously wiping away at the tears before they could fall. "You never once cared about anything, so why start now? You know I had thought you of all people will understand why I was doing this. The brave knight who fights for justice, I mean if anyone should understand, it should be you?"

Reagan’s jaw tightened but his eyes reflected an indiscernible emotion. Guilt? Anger? Or maybe, just maybe, regret? Finally he spoke, "Well you thought wrong?"

I smiled wryly at him, "Yeah." I replied, "I guess I did." I told him.

Reagan nodded his head at me before he asked the next question, "So? What’s your answer?"

I thought long and hard about it then, I stared at Reagan, searching his eyes but as usual, there was only those cold empty wall behind those dark depths of his. Not believing the words that were about to come out of my mouth, but I found myself saying it anyway.

"Yes." I answered and I saw Reagan’s eyes widen not even bothering to hide it.

He was clearly as surprised as I was but I was serious so I continued. "I will stop being the black knight." I informed him and his gaze narrowed as he stared at me.

"You would truly do that?" Reagan gasped in disbelief.

Still smiling wryly at him, I nodded my head at him. "But of course, you are my husband after all and your need comes before mine, my lord." I answered with a perfect courtesy.

Reagan flinched. A minor muscle movement in his jaw along with tensing around his eyes was the only sign he displayed in his reaction. He wasn’t expecting this. Before I could get a quick look at him, Reagan straightened.

"Well good," He said before going off to the other end of the room, "Now that we are done talking can you get out so I can get to be alone?" He asked in a dryly.

I smiled but it didn’t reach my eyes, "Yeah." I replied as I glared at Reagan’s back, "Enjoy your time alone for a long time, sire!" I said and without so much as a backward glance, I turned around and left the room.

I leaned against the closed door for a minute, releasing a breath I didn’t know I was holding. I held my fists tightly by my sides as my fingernails left marks in my palms during my forced motion through the poorly lit corridor.

The moment the door shut behind me, I released the breath I hadn’t realized I was holding. My hands clenched into fists at my sides, my nails biting into my palms as I forced myself to keep walking down the dimly lit hallway.

I wiped away at my tears at the corner of my eyes that were threatening to fall down. The last thing I needed was for anyone to see me and raise questions. I continued to walk down the hall when I met Heather halfway and all she had to do was take one look at me and ask the question, "Are you okay?"

I snorted in response as I met her. "And here I was thinking I was doing a very good job of it." I replied to which Heather gave me a look if pity, one I didn’t like. So I decided to move away from the topic before she asks what exactly happened. "What’s going on? Is something wrong?"

Heather’s gaze searched my face as if not satisfied with my answer but she decided to reply. "Lady Marina has invited you for tea."

"Tea?" I wasn’t in the mood for any tea!

"Yeah and we need to go now." Heather rushed out, "She seemed vexed about something so we do not want to anger her anymore!"

I heaved out a sigh not in the mood for any other theatrics, I could only deal with one Hawthorne today! I thought to myself before I decided to follow her. "Sure lead the way!" I replied her.

Heather bowed at me before she turned abruptly while walking quickly to show me through the hallways. I trailed after her, my mind a whirlwind of emotions after my confrontation with Reagan. The last thing on my mind was to have tea with Lady Marina but I know refusing her invitation would only make things worse, so I obediently decided to accept.

Heather stopped in front of the door to the tea room. Her hand briefly paused the door handle of the before she eventually entered. A mix of fresh jasmine and honey perfumed the air yet this familiar scent failed to ease the anxiety constricting my breast.

Lady Marina sat at the head of the table, her posture rigid, her fingers delicately holding a teacup, though the way she gripped it suggested she was anything but relaxed. Her sharp gaze flickered to me the moment I entered.

Lady Marina maintained a rigid posture at the table while using her delicate hands to hold a cup in a way indicating tension. Lady Marina focusing her intense stare at me as soon as I walked through the door but another thing I noticed was that she wasn’t alone.

Sitting at the head of the table right next to her was Madam Heidi!
