THE Knight's Hidden Princess -
Chapter 65: Just A Pawn
Chapter 65: Just A Pawn
We were heading back to the manor.
After discussing with Reagan last night, we had both decided to leave and go back to our home, deciding it to be safer than my father’s castle. Although we did play our path well, or at least I thought we did. Reagan seemed to have relaxed a little bit, though he did keep on drinking and I supposed he needed the courage of alcohol to be able to play his part.
I glanced at him from where he was busy inspecting the carriage ride. He had greeted me this morning when we were out but even though he agreed on playing pretend with me, I could still feel the way he was trying to put the distance between us which I don’t blame him for.
I mean the man just found out that I was supposed to make him fall in love with me so that he my father would be more loyal to him, so I couldn’t exactly fault him. But even if I didn’t blame him, I won’t lie that the distance between us hurt.
The afternoon light catches in Reagan’s hair just as a gust of wind stirs at his feet where he was busy patting the horses. But he still didn’t look at me even though I knew he could sense that I was watching him. Some part of me wanted to go to him, wanted to beg him and tell him that I was still the same Dahlia he knew, I never hid any of my feelings from him but some part of me knew that it was long over.
I heard movements behind me which brought me out of my reverie and I turned slightly to the side only to see Killian right behind me. He stood dressed in his tunic and suede coat, he had his arms crossed at his back as he stared at Reagan.
"Killian," I greeted with a nod of my head.
Killian glanced at me briefly with a smile on his face before he turned to glance back at Reagan who was now busy speaking with the captain of the guard to my father’s army. "So, what’s really happening between you two?"
I heaved out a sigh but a slight smile formed on my lips. We might have fooled a lot of people at the dinner party yesterday but it seemed the one person I couldn’t fool was Killian, who is fast elevating into the role of my best friend.
"You noticed huh?"
Killian snorted in response, "Hells, I’m surprised nobody did." He said and I snorted in response, "Are you okay though?"
I turned to look at him at that question and a small smile slowly appeared on my face as I stared at Killian. No one has ever asked me that question in weeks, but even if they did my answer would always remain the same. "Of course."
Killian stared at me, his brown eyes slowly assessing as if he could see through the veil I had kept in place ever since I arrived at my father’s castle. His mouth formed a narrow expression indicating doubt, though he chose to let the subject rest.
Sighing, Killian looked away from me. "You know you are not that could of a liar but sure, I’ll take your word for it."
I laughed a little, with a slight shake of my head I glanced back up at Killian only to find him glancing at me with a small smile on his face. "I actually prefer calling it selective honesty."
"Yeah and Reagan is just practicing selective avoidance, I take it?"
Speaking of Reagan, I turned to look at him only to find him staring at me with a tight expression on his face and as I stared at him, it slowly morphed into a smile, one that didn’t quite reach his eyes, a fake!
Drawing in a deep breath, I turned to look at Killian. "So, I guess this is goodbye."
"I guess." Killian murmured with a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. "Will you write to me? I just need to know how you are doing." He added, looking so nervous.
"But of course!" I informed him, reaching out to hold his arm.
Killian stared at my hand holding his, then he raised his head up to stare at me. "If anything happens, anything at all, then don’t forget to reach out to me, okay?"
"Of course." I smiled at Killian and this time it was real. Giving his hand one last squeeze, I bid him goodbye. "Goodbye Killian."
"Goodbye Dahlia." Killian said and he stared at my hand before he pulled away.
I watched as he headed towards his carriage with measured steps. As I stared at him, I couldn’t help but notice the way he walked looked heavy and burdened and it caused a strange ache in my chest. Killian is the kind of person that was just naturally cheerful but I feel like beneath all those smiles, there was something else that laid beneath it all, something that he wasn’t quite ready for anyone to see yet. But that didn’t stop him from always supporting me whether I requested it or not.
I was going to miss him! I thought to myself as I stared at his retreating figure. He was the only one who looked out for me and always seem to find me to make me feel better even though I always claimed I wanted to be alone. He was my friend, my only friend and during this period, I truly could use one.
Deciding I already saw enough, I turned to look at Reagan who waited patiently for me by the carriage. I turned to look back at the castle but I still couldn’t find any sign of Bjorn. I glanced up, searching for the where I knew his room would be but all I got was the curtain flickering slightly, as if someone had just been out.
Guess he wasn’t going to be coming after all! I thought to myself as I to myself as I turned back around and began entering the carriage.
I had been hoping to see him one last time before I leave but I guess my father got to him first. This morning at breakfast, Bjorn had been summoned by my father into his study. There were there for quite a long time and he didn’t come out till when we were done and even then, he claimed he had something urgent to do.
Not bothering to bid me goodbye.
Drawing in a deep breath, I allowed Reagan to give me a hand as I entered the carriage. He soon hopped in after me, closing the door while tapping on the roof twice to signify that we were ready to move.
I turned to glance back one last time as the carriage rolled forward. I can’t exactly say I will be missing it but I did wish I could have seen Bjorn one last time.
I turned to look at Reagan who sat down opposite me. His gaze was solely focused on me and I wasn’t going to lie and say it didn’t make me uncomfortable.
Sighing, I leaned back in my seat, "What now?"
"What were you and Killian discussing?"
I was a little surprised by the question but I kept my expression neutral. "I was just bidding him goodbye."
Reagan grunted in response, "You two looked a little bit too close for just goodbyes."
"What exactly are you trying to say Reagan?"
"Stay away from Killian!"
I gaped at Reagan not willing to believe what I was hearing. "Stay away from Killian?" I asked my voice filled with disbelief, "And who are you to decide to decide that?"
"I am your husband that’s who I am." Reagan suddenly said, "You will stay away from Killian, you are getting way too close for my comfort."
"By the hells Reagan!" I groaned, shaking my head at him, "I don’t know if you’ve forgotten or you simply can’t remember, but Killian and I have been friends ever since he arrived at the manor. He cares about me and he saved my life and that’s all there is, not sure why I am even explaining myself to you!" I finished with a heavy sigh.
Reagan on the other hand didn’t seem to understand. "Still don’t like the way he looks at you?"
"And what way does he look at me Reagan?" I retorted.
Reagan stared at me, opened his mouth and for the first time, I rendered the brave knight speechless. Heaving a deep sigh, Reagan looked away from me. "Well, I still don’t want you around him."
"You don’t want me around him?" I asked with a scoff, "What if I don’t want you around her?"
Reagan’s brow were raised as he stared at me in confusion. "Who?"
"Celeste!" I deadpanned.
Reagan rolled his eyes at me, "That isn’t the same!"
"Oh right." I said with a smile that didn’t quite reach my eyes, "The only difference here is that, you screw her while I actually I’m just friends with Killian. You know you are actually starting to sound like father, I am just some pawn to control and that’s all I will ever be to you, right?" I asked him.
Reagan opened his mouth to say something but I turned away from him, already ending the conversation.
