Chapter 35 - 35 35 You Invite I Pay
35: Chapter 35 You Invite, I Pay 35: Chapter 35 You Invite, I Pay Having left Ling Weiwei’s office, Lin Fei went straight to his cubicle.
Recalling what Ling Weiwei had said to him in her office, he picked up his phone and called Mu Shanshan.
Mu Shanshan, working on the twenty-sixth floor, took out her cell phone and saw that it was Lin Fei calling.
Her brows slightly furrowed, although they were already married, their phone conversations were infrequent and Lin Fei hardly ever took the initiative to call.
Although she was somewhat surprised, Mu Shanshan still answered, her voice cold, “What is it?”
Listening to the chilling indifference in his wife’s tone, Lin Fei sometimes really doubted whether Mu Hong had forced him to marry Mu Shanshan precisely because he knew of her frigidity and was worried she wouldn’t be able to marry otherwise, and so had foisted her off on him.
Of course, these thoughts were just that—thoughts.
If he actually voiced them to Mu Hong’s face, likely as not Mu Hong would curse him out and get violent.
“I wanted to ask you something.”
Lin Fei put his thoughts aside, his tone growing a bit more serious.
From what Ling Weiwei implied, Mu Shanshan was in a precarious situation.
They were family, after all, and the matter had arisen because of Lin Fei.
If things were as Ling Weiwei had suggested, Lin Fei didn’t mind being used by her to seduce Shen Peini.
The reason he called Mu Shanshan wasn’t that he didn’t trust Ling Weiwei; it was rather that he had managed to thoroughly offend Ling Weiwei before.
Lin Fei wasn’t sure if Ling Weiwei was setting a trap for him.
“Business or personal?”
“Business, I guess.”
“Ask.”
Mu Shanshan was especially sparing with her words during work hours.
Lin Fei was certain that if he had answered ‘personal,’ she would have hung up right away.
“So, I heard from Ling Weiwei that you’ve had a falling-out with Han Zhenhai?”
Mu Shanshan was quite astonished, her feeling of surprise deepened.
She had assumed Lin Fei was calling her to possibly sneak off work early.
Unexpectedly, Lin Fei, who usually appeared so indifferent, was proactively inquiring about company affairs.
“What do you want this information for?”
“A husband caring about his wife is only natural, right?”
“If you really cared about me, then you shouldn’t have rejected my suggestion this morning to apologize to Han Qiming.”
Mu Shanshan rarely said so much at once.
Her early confrontation with Han Zhenhai was largely due to Lin Fei.
“So you really did have it out with Han Zhenhai.
It seems I do have some weight in your heart after all.”
“You’re overthinking it.
If you called just to verify your importance in my heart, I can tell you clearly that my confrontation with Han Zhenhai was entirely for the company’s interest and has nothing to do with you.”
With that, Mu Shanshan hung up on Lin Fei neatly and cleanly.
“It’s hopeless trying to help him.”
In Mu Shanshan’s icy tone lay a hint of frustration, as if lamenting her inability to help him improve.
She had thought that Lin Fei was calling with a newly awakened conscience, ready to help share the company’s burdens.
After the call, her disappointment in Lin Fei was complete, and her sense of revulsion towards him deepened.
Truth be told, Mu Shanshan’s decision to confront Han Zhenhai early did carry an element of protecting Lin Fei’s feelings, but true to Mu Shanshan’s character, she would never admit it.
“Shen Xuan, ask Minister Ling to come up.”
Mu Shanshan’s work mood had been thoroughly disrupted by Lin Fei’s call.
She decided to set aside her paperwork and find out exactly what Ling Weiwei had told Lin Fei to prompt such an inexplicable call to her.
…
Although he was reprimanded by Mu Shanshan, Lin Fei had pretty much confirmed that Mu Shanshan’s situation was far from good.
He pocketed his phone and headed for Shen Peini’s office.
“Come in.”
Having a request to make, Lin Fei unusually knocked on the door, playing the gentleman for once.
“So quick to arrive, I thought Minister Ling would lecture you for ten or eight hours.
Did Minister Ling kick you out so soon?
Don’t tell me you got fired?” Shen Peini’s gaze brimmed with mirth as she watched Lin Fei approaching, her eyes alluringly hooking at him as if to ensnare his very soul.
“Would you be happy if I were fired?”
“Of course, I’d be happy.
If Minister Ling fired you and you had no source of income, struggling with food and shelter, then I could keep you,” Shen Peini chuckled.
“If you want to be the next one, you could try keeping me; I’m quite interested in your body, in fact.”
Damn, it’s all about who has the thicker skin and who’s more shameless.
In that regard, Lin Fei always considered himself second to none.
And why not first?
Simply because Lin Fei had grown tired of being first.
As expected, stumped by Lin Fei’s retort, Shen Peini couldn’t maintain that look of novelty anymore.
She gave Lin Fei a resentful glance from her beautiful eyes and reproached, “I really don’t know where Mr.
Mu found you.
You must have deliberately come here to annoy me, planning to work with Ling Weiwei and drive me out of the General Affairs Department, right?”
“What if I say yes?”
Lin Fei moved a step closer to Shen Peini, leaning forward so that his body was nearly pressing against her beautifully exquisite face.
“Would you have the heart?”
Damn, this woman is always so electrifying.
If not for being at the company, worried someone might knock and enter suddenly, Lin Fei really wanted to pin Shen Peini down and give her a good chastening.
“Penny.”
“Hmm?”
Shen Peini’s movements and expressions slightly froze, and somehow, she felt no disgust at Lin Fei’s calling.
In fact, Shen Peini felt that with Lin Fei’s use of that name, the distance between them seemed to have closed significantly.
The strangeness and barriers felt at first seemed to have dissipated with those two words.
“You don’t belong in the General Affairs Department.”
“So, are you here to be Ling Weiwei’s advocate, trying to drive me away?”
“It’s yes and no.” Lin Fei thought it over and decided to lay things out clearly for Shen Peini.
Beating around the bush or acting timid just wasn’t Lin Fei’s style, especially toward a woman he had taken a liking to.
“I am indeed here to advocate for Ling Weiwei, you—”
Shen Peini abruptly stood up, her tender jade finger pressing against Lin Fei’s lips, her breath fragrant, “Don’t say any more.
I’ve suddenly taken an interest in you, and I don’t want company matters to affect my feelings and judgment about you, okay?”
Lin Fei was somewhat dumbfounded by Shen Peini’s sudden change; even with years of experience navigating romantic entanglements, he was taken aback and overwhelmed.
“Little brother, how about treating your sister to dinner after work?”
Lin Fei was very tempted and wished he could nod in agreement immediately, but thinking of his empty wallet, he had to honestly respond, “I admit I’m very tempted, but there’s one thing I must make clear beforehand, I don’t have money to treat you to a fancy meal.”
Shen Peini’s alluring eyes deepened, “It doesn’t matter, you’re the host, I’ll pay.”
It turns out I’ve become so handsome that women offer to pay instead.
With Shen Peini being so forward, Lin Fei had no reason to hesitate, and he nodded vigorously, “It’s a deal.”
Lin Fei reluctantly took out his phone to check, damn it, he was startled to see that the message had come from Mu Shanshan.
With this in mind, Lin Fei gestured to Shen Peini and hurriedly left her office.
