Chapter 472 - Chapter 472 Chapter 472 A Worthwhile Deal
Chapter 472: Chapter 472: A Worthwhile Deal Chapter 472: Chapter 472: A Worthwhile Deal The Wan family had recently been at odds with Mr. and Mrs. Zhang, visiting daily to create a disturbance at their home, with each visit lasting at least half a day.
After returning from Fuman Building, Su Yunjin was surprisingly taken aback to find that the Wan family had not come to cause trouble for Mrs. Zhang that day and looked at Gu Ya curiously.
“Husband,” she said, puzzled, “how strange, why didn’t the Wan family come today?”
Gu Ya shook his head, “I don’t know!”
Since the Wan family did not show up to cause trouble, Su Yunjin briefly mentioned it to Gu Ya without much curiosity; after all, she had never been particularly interested in the preposterous affairs concerning Mrs. Zhang and Gu Baofu.
There were still five or six jars of stinky tofu left in the kitchen. Having sold two jars today, Gu Ya said he would help Su Yunjin to deliver the rest to Fuman Building in the afternoon.
Su Yunjin thought it would be good for Gu Ya to make the delivery in the afternoon.
So she agreed.
Even with his considerable strength, Gu Ya couldn’t carry five or six jars at once, so this time, he had arranged a bullock cart from the village in advance to head to the market.
While Gu Ya went to sell the stinky tofu, Su Yunjin continued her routine of delivering water to the workers, with Mrs. Chu accompanying her and carrying the teapot along with tea bowls.
Along the way, Su Yunjin curiously brought up the fact that the Wan family had not come to cause trouble today, but Mrs. Chu informed her, “Sister-in-law, this morning while you and the third brother were at the market, the Wan family came just after you left.”
They had actually visited today?
Su Yunjin found it odd.
“Sister-in-law,” she asked, “why did the people from the Wan family leave so early today?” On a normal day, the Wan family would at least quarrel with Mr. and Mrs. Zhang until the afternoon before leaving.
Mrs. Chu wasn’t entirely sure what had happened, but she did know that Mrs. Zhang had seemingly agreed to Wan Ruyan marrying her son Gu Changshun.
“Sister-in-law, I don’t know what got into the eldest sister-in-law today. All of a sudden, she agreed to the marriage proposal from the Wan family, consenting to Wan Ruyan marrying your eldest nephew!”
Mrs. Chu shared everything she knew with Su Yunjin.
Su Yunjin was even more astonished upon hearing this.
Hadn’t Mrs. Zhang resolutely refused the Wan family’s marriage proposal? How had she suddenly agreed today? Did she take the wrong medicine?
It was too abnormal.
Not only Su Yunjin but even Mrs. Chu thought the situation was extremely abnormal.
And then there was Mrs. Zhang, who looked down on Wan Ruyan, deeming her no more than a loose woman. She was adamantly against the idea of having Wan Ruyan marry her son, but when her son Gu Changshun told her to meet with him, the first thing he said upon seeing her was that he wanted to marry Wan Ruyan.
Mrs. Zhang refused.
Gu Changshun then argued, “Mother, the Wan family may not be wealthy, but marrying Wan Ruyan could bring us a substantial dowry. Besides, my reputation is already ruined; which girl from a decent family would marry me now? Here’s Wan Ruyan, practically throwing herself at me, wanting to marry me–why wouldn’t we accept such a favorable prospect, Mother? Don’t you think so?”
Upon hearing this, Mrs. Zhang thought it over and realized that her son made sense. Why hadn’t she considered this before? Her son Gu Changshun had been dipped in a pig cage twice, and no decent girl would likely want to marry him, but that wasn’t even the most important part.
The most important thing was that the Wan family was rich. If Wan Ruyan were to marry her son, she would undoubtedly bring a substantial dowry. There was money to be made and profits to be taken.
And on top of that, they could gain a daughter-in-law without spending a dime. Indeed, the deal was truly worthwhile!
