The bridal chamber was quiet now, and little could go wrong with the young bride there. With so many guests outside, Wang Meng found it difficult to entertain them all by himself. As the brother-in-law, Gu Yan ought to help Wang Meng with the guests.

After giving the bride a few instructions, Gu Yan left to assist Wang Meng with the guests, while Su Yunjin sneaked off to the bridal chamber, where her second sister was sitting alone on the edge of the bed, her head covered by a bridal veil.

Perhaps it was the sisterly bond and growing up together that alerted Su Ningxiu to her presence. “Little sister, is that you?” Su Ningxiu’s voice emanated from beneath the veil with a hint of surprise.

“Second Sister, how did you know it was me?” Su Yunjin laughed as she walked to the side of the bed, where Su Ningxiu secretly lifted a corner of her veil and saw the smiling face of Su Yunjin.

This was Su Ningxiu’s first marriage, so she was naturally nervous. “Little sister, now that you’re here, please don’t go. Stay with me in the bridal chamber.” With Su Yunjin there, she had someone to talk to.

Otherwise, she would have to sit alone in the bridal chamber all day, waiting for Wang Meng to return in the evening. Su Yunjin had come specifically to keep Su Ningxiu company.

and because she was too shy, she didn’t look at it again.

Su Yunjin watched Su Ningxiu closely. “Second Sister, what are you thinking about?” Snapping back to reality, Su Ningxiu, feeling guilty, hurriedly put the veil back down.

She hurriedly said, “Nothing, nothing, Second Sister isn’t thinking about anything.” Su Ningxiu would never tell her younger sister she was contemplating her upcoming wedding night with Wang Meng.

Outside in Wang Meng’s courtyard, banquet tables had been set up and guests had started sitting down to drink and eat, as it was now midday.

Su Ningxiu had been busy for most of the day, waking up early and going through the wedding ceremony. She must be hungry by now. “Second Sister, are you hungry? If you are, I’ll go get you something to eat right now.”

Su Ningxiu was full of nervousness and couldn’t tell if she was hungry or not,

especially with the thoughts of the bridal chamber that night making her palms sweat.

“Little sister, Second Sister cannot eat anything today by herself.”

According to tradition, the bride is not supposed to eat anything the entire day. She must wait until the evening when the groom returns, and then they eat together. For good luck, they could only have dumplings, glutinous rice balls, and other foods with auspicious meanings in the evening.

Su Ningxiu might not eat, but Su Yunjin felt there was no need to be so particular. If you’re hungry, you should eat.
