Chapter 718: Chapter 646, Make a Decision_1
"What did you say? You’re representing Yeyang’s elders to propose marriage to Daohua on Yeyang’s behalf?!" Lady Yan was shocked as she looked at Gu Jian.
Yeyang was the son of a prince, how could Daohua’s master be involved in proposing a marriage?
Gu Jian placed the dragon-shaped Jade Pendant in front of Lady Yan: "Sister is Yeyang’s blood grandmother, she has the authority over his marriage matters."
Upon hearing this, Lady Yan stood frozen on the spot, staring dumbfounded at Gu Jian, unable to grasp what was happening.
Gu Jian did not urge her but waited quietly instead.
After a long while, Lady Yan finally came back to her senses: "Master Daohua... What did you just say? Who is Sister to Yeyang?"
Gu Jian pointed to the dragon-shaped Jade Pendant: "Under the heavens, only the sovereign, elevated to the highest esteem, is entitled to wear a dragon-shaped Jade Pendant; you need not doubt Sister’s identity."
Lady Yan looked at the dragon-shaped Jade Pendant and swallowed hard: "This news is too much for me; give me a moment to take it in."
She was no longer a simple elderly woman from the countryside, having learned much while by her son’s side over the years, she understood the grave implications of what Gu Jian disclosed to her.
If Sister was Yeyang’s blood grandmother, wouldn’t that mean she is the mother of the Emperor?
And to her knowledge, the Imperial Family had declared to the outside world that Empress Dowager Jiang was the Emperor’s mother.
Lady Yan’s heart raced; she was frightened by this revelation.
Gu Jian fell silent for a moment, waiting for Lady Yan’s emotions to settle, before continuing: "I know you have many questions right now, but there are matters that pertain to the Imperial Family’s secrets, which I shouldn’t divulge to you."
Lady Yan didn’t wish to know too many of the Imperial Family’s affairs, and quickly said: "I understand, you don’t have to tell me."
Gu Jian looked at Lady Yan: "Sister’s health actually began to decline several years ago, and at the beginning of this year, she almost couldn’t make it, had it not been for Daohua and Yeyang finding Lingzhi and millennium Polygonum, which barely saved her life."
"But during the recent revolt by the eighth prince, the Emperor was injured, and the shock caused Sister’s old ailments to flare up, leaving her beyond the help of medicine or doctors now."
"These past two years, Sister’s greatest joy has been to see Daohua and Yeyang enjoy their life together; now that she senses her days are numbered, what concerns her most are these two children."
Speaking thus, she looked at Lady Yan.
"Old Lady, you’ve seen Yeyang grow up. His character and appearance are certainly worthy of Daohua."
Lady Yan hurriedly said: "Of course, Yeyang is indeed a good child, and our whole family is very fond of him, but his status is too distinguished, Manman cannot match him."
Gu Jian countered: "Daohua is my disciple, she is a worthy match for Yeyang. As long as you give your consent to the children’s marriage, I promise you here that I will later obtain an imperial edict for their marriage from the Emperor."
Faced with a decision about her granddaughter’s future, Lady Yan was uncertain, but Gu Jian had revealed her identity, and Lady Yan dared not outright reject the proposal, leaving her stuck where she stood.
"Cough cough~"
Just then, a severe coughing fit came from inside the house from Elder Gu.
Hearing it, Gu Jian immediately turned and entered the house.
Lady Yan hastily followed, not daring to leave the dragon-shaped Jade Pendant in the main hall, so she took it with her.
"Sister!"
Elder Gu was coughing up blood again, and this time, again and again. Gu Jian rushed to assist her with her breathing, taking a while before finally helping her to stop coughing.
Elder Gu, leaning on Gu Jian’s shoulder for breath, noticed the dragon-shaped Jade Pendant in Lady Yan’s hand and a smile appeared on her face: "Sister, have you agreed to the children’s marriage?"
Looking at the withered Elder Gu, Lady Yan found herself unable to utter a word of refusal.
Elder Gu took her silence as assent, and her smile deepened.
Just then, Daohua and Xiao Yeyang, hearing the commotion, hurried over.
"Grandma!"
Seeing the two of them, Granny Gu’s eyes lit up, and she raised her hand towards them.
Master Daohua hurried forward and took Granny Gu’s hand, "Granny, rest well. The peach blossoms on the mountain are about to bloom. Once you’re better, Xiao Yeyang and I will take you to see them."
Granny Gu smiled and nodded, then turned her gaze to Xiao Yeyang.
When Xiao Yeyang saw this, he also walked over.
As he drew near, Gu Jian spoke up, "You come and support your sister."
Xiao Yeyang glanced at Gu Jian, said nothing, and sat at the head of the bed, letting Granny Gu lean on his shoulder.
Granny Gu slowly lifted her other hand, and when Xiao Yeyang reached out, she pulled his hand to lay it on top of Master Daohua’s.
This simple act left Granny Gu so exhausted, she was gasping for breath.
Master Daohua hurriedly helped her catch her breath, and after Granny Gu’s breathing eased, she looked up at Xiao Yeyang, "Yeyang, could you call me ’Grandmother’?"
Upon hearing these words, both Xiao Yeyang and Master Daohua were visibly shocked.
Looking into Granny Gu’s eyes filled with hope, Xiao Yeyang’s heart suddenly cleared, and the doubts lingering in his mind seemed to find answers at that moment.
Why was the Prince not close to the Jiang Family?
Why, when he first saw Granny Gu, even though her face was marred, did he feel an inexplicable kinship?
Why were Granny Gu and Grandmaster Gu so good to him?
Why had the Prince sent Caiju and Dongli here, and why had he himself come to Taohua Temple time and again?
"Grandmother!"
Xiao Yeyang called out this word with a trembling voice.
Master Daohua saw that at the instant Xiao Yeyang called out "Grandmother," Granny Gu’s eyes sparkled with an incomparable brilliance, dazzling Master Daohua into a momentary daze.
All over Granny Gu’s face and in her eyes was a smile as she tightly held Xiao Yeyang and Master Daohua’s hands, "Good children, I will arrange your marital affairs for you."
Xiao Yeyang and Master Daohua were again jolted, both looking at each other at the same time.
Granny Gu looked towards Gu Jian and Mrs. Yan, "I am of no use anymore. Please take trouble over these children’s marriage for me."
Outside the house, Defu, Wang Manman, Caiju, and Dongli all caught Granny Gu’s words.
Wang Manman was utterly confused, but Defu, Caiju, and Dongli understood everything.
Defu was silent for a moment before gesturing for Wang Manman, Caiju, and Dongli to follow him out of the courtyard.
Wang Manman asked in bewilderment, "Where are we going?"
Defu, "Didn’t you hear? The old lady is waiting to see the master and Miss Yan get married. We need to start preparations quickly."
Wang Manman exclaimed, "Is that what the old lady meant?"
Defu nodded affirmatively, "Of course, that’s what she meant." Then, looking at Caiju and Dongli, "You both agree, don’t you?"
Caiju and Dongli exchanged a glance, thinking that since ancient times, there had been the custom of offsetting misfortunes with joyous events. Perhaps the old lady, upon seeing the Little Prince and Miss Yan get married, would feel cheered and her illness might improve.
So, they both nodded firmly.
Seeing their reaction, Defu immediately turned to Wang Manman, "See, everyone heard it. Hurry up. Although we’re pressed for time, the master and Miss Yan’s wedding must have everything they need; we can’t let them feel slighted."
Seeing the three of them step out of the courtyard quickly, Wang Manman scratched her head in confusion, "Is that what the old lady meant?" But she still hastened to follow them.
