Chapter 91: Familiar Energy

Chapter 91: Familiar Energy

"What are you doing?" Soleia asked woodenly, not daring to breathe at the sudden addition to her bed. This was her private space, and Orion had intruded without a single word of greeting. "Get out."

"Not until you tell me what has been going on," Orion said, wrapping his arms around her body. She felt warmth flooding into her against her will. Orion’s very presence seemed to heat up the tiny enclave underneath the blanket.

"I do not understand," he said, though his voice was noticeably much softer than it was before, tinged with the patience he did not have ever since Elowyn’s necklace had been disposed of. "Where is Elowyn?"

Soleia pushed him away, but it was ineffective. She could only lie there in the dark stony silence, determined to ignore his very presence. He was an unwanted and unnecessary human heater. She would rather freeze to death than leech off his warmth. However, her traitorous body was slowly getting more relaxed and sleepy in his presence, as though his heat was melting her icy defensiveness.

She felt her eyelids starting to close. Then Orion opened his big mouth, jolting her from her slumber.

"Don’t sleep! You have to answer my questions first." He squeezed her waist, and she hissed in anger. "Where is Elowyn?"

His sheer audacity woke her up.

"How would I know where your mistress went? Maybe she got tired of your insufferable behavior and decided to leave you!"

"Elowyn would never leave me without a good reason," Orion shot back, his eyes seemingly glowing luminous under her blanket. "Did you or your father do something to her?"

"I long to live with as much delusion as you do. I’m sure it must be terribly exciting to be completely wrong about your own appeal," Soleia snorted, her eyebrow twitching violently.

She reached out her hand to jab at his open wounds, delighting in his hiss of pain. Her fingers were stained with his blood. It was disgusting, but it gave her a sick sense of satisfaction after all he had put her through.

Then, she suddenly felt energy rush out of her body.

"Are you trying to give me an infection?" Orion demanded, finally pulling away from her.

Yet, this time it was Soleia who reached out for him, but it wasn’t because of any newfound affection for her stubborn husband. Instead, she was drawn to the strange, awfully familiar dizziness― one that was brought about when she had any contact with amethysts.

"What are you up to now? Let go of me!"

"Wait, let me try something." Soleia breathed out deeply, a feverish glint of excitement in her eyes despite the lethargy of her body.

She had realized something important.

The traces of amethyst enchantment she had detected... were in Orion’s blood!

Elowyn had somehow gotten her enchantment to sink under Orion’s skin, right into his blood, in between the time Soleia had first dispelled it and her throwing the amethyst away. That was why she couldn’t detect the familiar purple sheen in Orion’s eyes like before. Elowyn’s magic wasn’t used the traditional way― it had been infused deep into his body and spread like a parasite.

No wonder he had been such a pain recently!

Soleia had no idea how Elowyn could have achieved such a feat with her powers, but now that she knew it existed, Soleia could start undoing it, even if she had no real clue how to begin.

Orion flinched and tugged her hand away. "Don’t touch there― it’s bleeding, you idiot!"

"That’s the point!" Soleia tutted irritably at how he was wasting her precious time. If the wound healed, she would miss her chance to treat him for good.

Soleia slapped both hands on his open wound and focused her energy on purging that murky feeling she detected in his blood.

"You’re going to give me an infection," Orion grumbled under his breath, but he was surprisingly pliant to her request.

To Soleia’s dismay, it felt like she was shoveling a blizzard’s worth of snow with a teaspoon. Sweat started to bead on her forehead, and her head began to spin. Nausea grew in her stomach, threatening to make her dry heave.

The glow of her selenite earrings merely turned brighter and brighter, pulsing in beat with her breathing.

Orion stilled under her hand, surprisingly quiet. It was only when he saw Soleia’s figure starting to sway that he shifted, tucking her into his hold. Soleia let out a breathy exhale, her quiet puff of air landing on Orion’s collarbone, causing goosebumps to form on his skin.

It was warm, dancing and tickling his skin as though a butterfly’s wings were fanning across his collarbone. For some reason, having Soleia tucked so protectively in his embrace caused his skin to ignite, the flames dancing in the pits of his stomach in a sinfully unfamiliar manner.

"Are you alright?" Orion asked, his voice quiet. His hand reached out to the top of her head, patting it softly as though he was soothing a child.

Soleia hummed in response. Her eyes couldn’t open due to tiredness, and she couldn’t help but feel upset at her own weakness. She didn’t speak a word, and to be fair, she felt far too exhausted to even pry her own two lips apart to speak.

Orion, on the other hand, watched as Soleia’s face turned paler and paler. The dried blood over her upper lips was quickly coated in a thick layer of red, the color of fresh blood. Every breath Soleia took turned weaker, causing Orion’s eyes to widen with panic.

"Soleia," Orion said, gently shaking her in his arms. "Soleia, open your eyes. Soleia."

However, other than the steady trickle of blood, Soleia barely moved. The movement of her chest was getting gentler by the second, and Orion cursed under his breath. Placing his hands under her knees and behind her back, he easily hoisted her off the bed and exited the room, his eyes peering left and right until he finally caught sight of an old man dressed in the servants’ uniform.

He marched straight over, Soleia in his arms, and glared at the man, his expression frosty.

"Where is the royal physician?"
