Chapter 87: The King and The Servant

At Averion Castle

King Solomon was unusually quiet today. He couldn’t forget Eve’s face which resembled her mother so much. He didn’t get enough sleep just thinking about her.

"Your Majesty, you haven’t touched your food. Are you feeling unwell?" Zaldy, King Solomon’s old servant, asked him worriedly. It seemed that King Solomon didn’t have an appetite.

"Zaldy... My nightmares returned. She showed up in my dream again," King Solomon said in his trembling voice. He covered his face using both hands.

The old servant knew whom the king was referring to. The woman in his dream was Eve’s mother. She always haunted him in his nightmares.

"Tell me, Zaldy. What should I do?" There was a hint of helplessness in his voice

"Your Majesty, I’ll ask the royal physician to prescribe you a stronger medicine that can help you in your sleep."

King Solomon nodded and allowed the old servant to leave his chamber. But before the servant vanished, the king reminded him.

"Don’t mention this to my wife. Queen Amara must not know that I’ve been seeing her in my dreams."

"Yes, Your Majesty. Your secret is safe with me." Zaldy reassured him.

As King Solomon was left alone in his chamber, he started to reminisce about his encounter with Eve’s mother.

One morning, King Solomon disguised himself as a palace servant. He roamed around the castle, wearing a servant’s uniform.

He visited the outer palace and he accidentally met the most beautiful female servant in the palace.

King Solomon could still vividly remember her wavy silver-gray hair swaying with the wind as she hung the duvet she washed. When she turned around, her mesmerizing emerald eyes met King Solomon’s curious gaze.

’Who is she? Is she a new servant here?’

Though she wore ordinary clothes, Eve’s mother exuded elegance even in the way she simply stood under the sunshine.

King Solomon was completely smitten by her ethereal beauty. Without hesitation, he approached her.

"Why are you alone? Where are the other servants?" King Solomon asked her.

The woman hesitated to answer him.

"Don’t be afraid. I’m also a royal servant here." King Solomon didn’t want her to feel uncomfortable in his presence.

"May I help you with that?" he added, offering her some help.

She smiled and nodded, allowing King Solomon to give her a hand. The whole morning the two of them washed several blankets and duvets.

"Forgive me. I’m not used to this kind of chores. Male servants didn’t usually wash blankets," King Solomon explained to keep his disguise. She might be suspicious of him since he didn’t know how to wash the blankets.

The beautiful maiden just let out a soft giggle. Just like him, she wasn’t used to doing household chores because she was a princess from another kingdom.

She was just a new servant in the palace. Because of her beauty, several female servants were envious of her so they started bullying her, dumping all the laundry tasks on her. They never helped her.

"By the way, may I know your name?" King Solomon could no longer hold his curiosity. He wanted to know her.

"I’m Esme," she said, introducing herself.

King Solomon accepted her hand and replied, "I’m Cristoff." He never used his real name.

"Thank you for your help, Cristoff," Esmeralda softly said, expressing her gratitude toward him.

’Even her voice is so beautiful... so angelic,’ King Solomon thought to himself.

Shaking her hand, he noticed that it was soft. Most servants should have calloused hands. But King Solomon just brushed it off. He didn’t pay much attention to it.

Ever since that day, King Solomon often disguised himself as a royal servant, making a way to meet Esmeralda secretly.

His admiration for her deepened as time went by. He grew closer to her and began to fall for her. Until the time he could no longer control his desire for her, he committed a sin.

He was a married man with three children and the ruler of this kingdom. However, his feelings for Esmeralda blinded him, and he lost his rationality. He always yearned to be with her, and he didn’t consider the consequences of his actions.

He continued deceiving Esmeralda, pretending to be a royal servant so that he could be with her. He was always supporting and protecting her in the shadows. He punished every servant who bullied Esmeralda. He warned them to treat her well.

One time, King Solomon saw Esmeralda talking with some knights. He got jealous of them so he punished those knights without valid reason. He even forbade them from seeing a female servant.

So many knights tried to court Esmeralda because of her beauty and kind-hearted nature. Every man who got to know her would eventually fall in love with her.

With so many rivals, King Solomon was threatened. He was afraid that those men would take Esmeralda away from him. That was the turning point, forcing King Solomon to confess his love for her even though he knew that it was so wrong.

"Esme, I love you," King Solomon finally confessed. "I want to be with you forever. Will you marry me?"

The word forever was a lie. He knew he couldn’t be with her. He already had a wife. And he couldn’t marry Esmeralda.

But he wanted to mark her and claim her so that no other men could have her.

"I love you too, Cristoff. Yes! I want to marry you." When she said those words, Esmeralda didn’t care about Cristoff’s status. She loved him genuinely despite the fact he was just a royal servant in Averion.

King Solomon felt like he was the luckiest man the moment Esmeralda confessed her love to him as well.

He grabbed her and kissed her like there was no tomorrow, holding her in a tight embrace. He had been dying to kiss her and hug her like this.

Just when he thought he could claim her and make love to her, Esmeralda stopped him from going too far.

"Cristoff, we can do it here. I love you but I can’t give you myself yet. I have to do it during our wedding night." Esmeralda was determined to maintain her purity and reserve it for their wedding night.
