Chapter 165: Uncertainty in Future
Chapter 165: Uncertainty in Future
Crown Prince Cassian and his troops missed Caleb’s team because they had already left the capital. But he was reunited with Enox’s team.
"Your Highness, we are ready to infiltrate the castle. Caleb’s team provided us with information about the hidden tunnel and the map of the castle." Enox informed Prince Cassian and Captain Avan.
"The warrior named Miles was able to meet Lady Sylvana. He said she was not imprisoned. She is staying in a pavilion. She can freely roam around the palace without shackles," he added.
Prince Cassian just simply nodded after hearing his report. But he looked more interested in Eve’s whereabouts than Sylvana.
"How about Princess Evelina? Do you have any information about her whereabouts? Is she being imprisoned inside the palace?"
Enox shook his head. "Your Highness, Princess Evelina will be heading to Kingdom Averion. She is commanding an army with five hundred knights. They are about to leave tomorrow."
"What? I can’t understand. I thought she was captured by King Zaraki. Why is she leading the army?" Prince Cassian suddenly became confused.
"Your Highness, there is a rumor that Princess Evelina is a member of the Goldwyn royal family. She is the daughter of the exiled Princess Esmeralda, the daughter of King Arthur." Enox revealed Princess Eve’s identity. He had been gathering information around the capital for the past few days, and this was what he discovered.
’She is indeed a descendant of the Goldwyn Family. No wonder she is a beast tamer.’ Cassian thought to himself.
"Does it mean she doesn’t need to be rescued by us?" Prince Cassian asked Enox with a disappointed look on his face.
"I’m afraid... that would be the case, your Highness. We must focus on rescuing Lady Sylvana." Enox stated his honest opinion regarding the matter.
Crown Prince Cassian just narrowed his eyes while clenching his fists.
"I understand. You shall move. I will not join you. I will wait for you outside the castle. Make sure to rescue Sylvana on my behalf." The crown prince gave his command to Enox’s team.
Since Eve didn’t need to be rescued, Prince Cassian decided not to participate in this mission. Infiltrating the castle was too risky if they would get caught. Even Alaric failed to escape.
"Don’t forget about Chancellor Igrin! Bring the traitor with you," Prince Cassian reminded them.
"Yes, your Highness. We shall bring him to you!" Enox reassured him.
Captain Avan stayed behind to guard Prince Cassian. Enox’s team started to move, heading to the entrance of the hidden tunnel.
Meanwhile, inside the palace, Eve sought Sylvana’s presence. She was hoping to find Alaric’s cure through the seer’s help.
"Princess Eve, why are you looking for me?" Sylvana asked, inviting her to sit down. They found an isolated spot in the garden area.
Eve held Sylvana’s hand, giving her a pleading look. "Lady Sylvana, I want to ask a favor from you. Can you see Alaric’s future in your vision?"
Sylvana frowned in puzzlement. She wondered why Eve looked so scared when she mentioned Alaric. Did something wrong happen to him?
"Is he not recovering well from his injuries?" Sylvana asked her curiously.
Eve nodded, worry and sadness evident in her eyes. "Could you please check on him? Tell me if you can see a vision of his future. I hope there is a way to save him from his illness." She was relentless in finding Alaric’s cure.
Sylvana fell silent for a moment, contemplating whether to cooperate with Eve or ignore her request. Besides, Alaric was her master’s rival, and her loyalty lay with Prince Cassian.
"Please, Sylvana... I need your help," she begged desperately.
Sylvana could only sigh in defeat. In the end, she couldn’t ignore Eve’s request.
"Alright. Bring me to Alaric. I will try to see what the future holds for him."
Princess Eve’s face brightened up when she heard that. "Thank you, Sylvana. I owe you this!"
She stood up, gently pulling Sylvana’s hand. The two ladies headed to Eve’s quarters, where Alaric was recuperating. When they arrived, Alaric was lying on the bed, fast asleep.
Eve glanced at her husband worriedly. "He is still weak. He can’t stand on his own. He sleeps for a longer time. And he doesn’t have appetite."
"What about the royal physician? He didn’t prescribe him with medicine? Princess Eve, don’t expect me to cure his illness. I’m a Seer, not a Healer." Sylvan tried to make things clear with Eve.
Eve gave her a faint smile. "I know. I’m requesting you to see his future. I am the one who will cure him. I just need to know what kind of vision you will see about him."
Eve felt the need to hear a reassurance from Sylvana that Alaric could survive this. She was afraid that she wouldn’t be able to save her husband– her beloved man.
"I understand..." Sylvana said as she approached Alaric’s bed. She stood before him and pressed her palm against Alaric’s forehead. Then, she slowly closed her eyes.
Princess Eve remained quiet as she watched Sylvana. She intertwined her fingers, praying for Alaric’s survival.
Sylvana concentrated as she tried to see a vision of Alaric’s future. A deep crease formed on her forehead, and she started to sweat. She remained standing as she entered a deep trance.
After a few moments, her eyes snapped open, turning white as the vision unfolded in her mind. She felt like time had slowed down, and she mentally stepped into a different realm.
Eve gasped when she saw Sylvana’s tears falling from the corners of her eyes. ’What is happening? Why is she crying? What is she seeing right now?’
Princess Eve became more anxious and afraid after seeing Sylvana’s tears. Her heart pounded so hard against her chest, and she felt suffocated. She started to overthink.
’Is Alaric going to die? Am I going to fail?’
In a brief moment, Sylvana’s vision ended. Her eyes turned to normal as she snapped back to reality. She felt drained, causing her to stagger backward. Fortunately, Eve was there to support her and steady her footing.
Eve guided her to the sofa, making her sit down. "Here, drink some water first," she said, handing her a glass of water.
Sylvana thanked her before taking a sip. She panted heavily, catching her breath.
Eve remained silent, afraid to ask her. She didn’t know if she was ready to hear what Sylvana had seen in her vision. She lowered her gaze, biting her lower lip. She tried her best to compose herself and be brave to face her fear.
"W-What did you see, Sylvana?" Eve asked her, her voice barely audible.
Silence befell them for a moment. Sylvana didn’t answer her right away. She slowly held Eve’s hands, squeezing them gently.
With that gesture, Eve could no longer hold back her tears. She began to sob, covering her face with both hands.
Sylvana took a deep sigh as she patted Eve’s back, comforting her. She waited for Eve to calm down before revealing what she had seen in her vision.
The two ladies talked for half an hour before Sylvana left her quarters. Eve remained still, the light in her eyes disappearing as she stared at the wall absentmindedly. Then, she just found herself crying silently as tears streamed down her face like raindrops.
After crying her heart out, she stood up and traced her steps toward Alaric. She quietly sat down on the edge of the bed, her eyes lingering on his sleeping figure. She wiped her tears away before reaching out to caress his face.
The warmth of her touch grazing his face pulled Alaric from his slumber. He peeled his eyes open only to be greeted by Eve’s charming face.
"Eve, what’s wrong? What happened to your eyes? Did you cry?" Alaric bombarded her with a series of questions upon noticing her swollen eyes. He tried to sit up so that he could talk to her properly.
Meanwhile, Eve pounced on him, hugging him tightly. She buried her face in the nook of his neck as she concealed her face. She didn’t want Alaric to know that she was sad and scared.
"I didn’t cry. I got something in my eye for a second," she lied.
Alaric just smiled as he secured her body in his embrace.
"Where have you been this morning? I didn’t see you when I woke up." Alaric asked her.
Eve went out earlier to meet Captain Alucard to finalize their invasion plan. However, Eve didn’t have any plan to share this with Alaric.
"I roamed around the palace. Did you miss me?" Eve said, trying to sound cheerful while masking her true emotions.
Alaric let out a husky chuckle. "Hmm. Of course. I miss my dear wife. I am hoping to see her face whenever I wake up!"
"Alaric, I will be leaving Kingdom Zephyra tomorrow. Unfortunately, King Zaraki didn’t allow me to bring you with me. Can you wait for my return?"
Alaric remained quiet for a long moment. Of course, he didn’t want to be separated from Eve, especially now that he was unsure how much longer he would stay alive. He could feel that the poison was spreading fast inside his body. But he didn’t want Eve to know.
"I don’t want you to leave. Can’t you just stay here by my side?"
Hearing his request, Eve felt as if her heart were being squeezed. She had to leave him temporarily to complete her mission so that King Zaraki would give Alaric the partial antidote to prolong his life.
