The Hero's Forsaken Princess -
Chapter 163: The Reunion
Chapter 163: The Reunion
Kingdom Zephyra...
Crown Prince Cassian and his troops started traveling toward the capital. They were disguised as merchants and adventurers.
"Chancellor Igrin is the traitor, your Highness. What do you intend to do with him?" Captain Avan asked Prince Cassian inside their carriage.
Prince Cassian’s face darkened as he clenched his fists. Igrin’s betrayal caused too much trouble for him. Sylvana became a hostage of the enemy kingdom, and the assassination mission failed.
Who would have thought that Sylvana’s mission involved a high-ranking official of Eldara? This was a disgrace to their kingdom and might cause to break the alliance between Eldara and Averion.
"He wanted to use my sister, Thalia, to inherit the throne. But I won’t let them win. I will kill Igrin the moment I see him!" Prince Cassian said through gritted teeth.
"Your Highness, we should capture him alive so that we will know who his accomplices are. Once Igrin dies, some other people will continue to scheme against you and instigate Princess Thalia to take the throne." Captain Avan expressed his opinion regarding this insurgency cooked up by Chancellor Igrin.
"Hmm. You have a point. But for now, we need to rescue Princess Evelina and Sylvana. Focus on this task!" Prince Cassian commanded the captain of the royal guards.
"Don’t worry, your Highness. Once we arrive at the capital, we will regroup with Alaric’s men. I heard they met some allies headed by Alucard Winslow, the former captain of Zephyra’s royal guards."
Prince Cassian took a deep sigh. "I know. We should prepare ourselves. Besides, I must be the one to save Princess Evelina."
Captain Avan could only nod in response to him. He couldn’t understand why their crown prince was so invested in Princess Eve’s matter.
"Your Highness, we should hurry and return to Eldara. King Constantine will abdicate the throne and pass it to you. What if Chancellor Igrin is on his way to Kingdom Eldara? You might lose the throne if you are still here. Why don’t you leave this task to our elite warriors?" Captain Avan was not certain if he could protect Prince Cassian if they ever infiltrated the palace. He was worried since Alaric and his team had failed their mission.
Crown Prince Cassian was displeased by Avan’s suggestion. "No. I can’t leave now. I must finish this since I’m already here. No backing down."
Captain Avan could only sigh in defeat.
Meanwhile, Gideon and Eve sneak out of the palace and secretly search for Caleb’s team. She believed that Alaric’s comrade had never left the capital yet.
They were strolling around the capital, hoping to find Caleb. They didn’t know where they were hiding right now.
"Are you sure Caleb is still here? Will they approach us like this?" Gideon asked Eve as they blended in the crowd.
"Yes. Let’s wait. We should go to the areas where they can easily see us." Eve made a suggestion.
"Gideon... I need to buy some herbal medicine. Do you know a place where we can buy rare medicines?" Eve was still worried about Alaric’s health condition.
Because of the poison in his body, her husband was becoming weaker. She was still trying to figure out what kind of poison King Zaraki used.
"Is Alaric still sick? Didn’t the royal physician prescribe some medicine for him?" Gideon asked, looking at her in puzzlement.
Gideon had noticed that Eve had become distant with him after speaking to King Zaraki. She stopped confiding in him about her problems. He wondered if King Zaraki had said something to her that caused her to change in attitude toward him.
Eve remained silent, worries evident in her eyes. However, she couldn’t tell Gideon the truth. Chancellor Gustav forbade her from informing Gideon about her deal with King Zaraki. She couldn’t tell him about Alaric’s poison either.
"He is recovering slowly. But I need more medicines because I want to make a healing potion that can heal everyone’s injury. I feel like we need it as we will go into war," she said as an alibi.
Gideon gazed at her for a long moment. He could somehow feel it. Princess Eve was hiding something from him. But he didn’t want to force her.
"Eve, if you need anything, just remember I am just here. You can always ask for my help. I will support you."
Gideon understood Eve’s predicament. She was both a hostage and a tool that King Zaraki intended to use to strengthen his army. What he truly desired was Eve’s beast-taming power.
Meanwhile, Eve just gave him a reassuring smile. She didn’t feel alone because Gideon was always by her side.
However, she could feel some awkwardness whenever she would recall King Zaraki’s words.
’King Zaraki wants me to take Gideon as my second husband. I don’t want to do that. I know Gideon will also object to this marriage arrangement. I don’t want him to suffer. He’s done enough. I will never take his freedom away.’ Eve felt sorry for getting Gideon involved in this problem.
"Eve, how do you feel after taming the dragon? You made me worried at that time. Is the dragon harmless?" Gideon decided to change the topic.
Eve couldn’t help but smile as she recalled her bond with Zephyr, the stone dragon.
"Zephyr is a good dragon. He doesn’t want to cause widespread destruction, unlike other dragons. He focuses on protecting its master and this kingdom. I will introduce him to you next time. You don’t need to be afraid of him. He won’t hurt you."
Gideon let out a soft chuckle while scratching his face. "Of course, I’m not afraid of a mighty dragon. But I know it’s hard to defeat it. A dragon force can destroy a kingdom and kill thousands of warriors in just a blink of an eye."
Princess Eve nodded in agreement. "That’s true. And King Zaraki will use that to his advantage. He can make any kingdom surrender simply by intimidating them with the dragon. I have no choice but to obey him. In exchange for allowing me to move around freely, Alaric has to become his hostage. To keep him safe, I have to follow his every word."
Gideon suddenly grabbed Eve’s shoulders. "I can give you your freedom. I will help you escape together with Alaric. You don’t have to obey King Zaraki."
Eve fell silent upon hearing that. With Gideon’s capability, she knew that he could help them escape. However, with Alaric’s condition, she couldn’t leave, or else King Zaraki wouldn’t give her the antidote. She still needed more time to know the source of the poison and create an antidote for him.
"Not now, Gideon. I still have unfinished business to do. I’m gonna use this opportunity to take my revenge against Queen Amara. I will conquer Kingdom Averion."
Since he could feel that Eve had made up her mind, he couldn’t interfere anymore. All he needed to do was support her.
"Let’s go. I know some Apothecary and herbalist shops near us," Gideon said, pulling Eve’s hand as he led her to the shops.
It was fate that the shop they went to was a secret hideout of the rebel group.
"Princess Eve?" Randolf uttered her name the moment he saw her.
Everyone followed his line of sight only to see the man they didn’t want inside– Gideon, the son of Chancellor Gustav.
"Protect the princess!" Rolando suddenly commanded. Randolf immediately pulled Eve toward them.
Rolando and his comrades immediately grabbed their weapons, pointing them at Gideon. Gideon just stood in his spot, not drawing his sword.
"Wait. What’s going on here?" Eve looked at them in confusion.
"Princess Eve, he is a traitor. He might be the one who leaked information about our mission. He might be working together with Chancellor Igrin. He deceived us all." Randolf explained to her, raising his suspicion against Gideon.
Gideon just shrugged his shoulders. He could easily knock them down if he wanted to. However, he chose not to fight them for Eve’s sake.
"Stop. This is just a misunderstanding. Gideon is not a traitor. He is not an enemy. He is here to help me. Please. Listen to me. Drop your weapons." Eve requested Rolando and his comrades.
Rolando hesitated for a moment. However, he didn’t want to disobey Princess Eve’s command. They pledged to follow her and remained loyal to her because she was the granddaughter of the late King Arthur.
"Listen to the princess," Rolando said, sheathing his own sword. The others obeyed his command.
"Close the door. You two, stand guard outside and make sure no one followed them here," Rolando instructed his comrades.
"Princess, sit down. I’ll just call Caleb. He is watching over Dillon and Franco." Randolf left them for a moment.
"How are they?" Eve asked Rolando expectantly. "I want to see them. Maybe I can do something to treat their wounds."
Rolando was about to escort her when the guard outside informed Rolando about the arrival of their commander and their captain.
"Commander Kevin and Captain Alucard are here!"
Everyone stopped and looked in the direction of the door. Eve was surprised to see a familiar face the moment the door was pushed open.
"Sir Win?! You are also here..." Eve mumbled in puzzlement.
