The Hero's Forsaken Princess -
Chapter 16: The Black Hunter
Chapter 16: The Black Hunter
"Annie... No!" Eve screamed, hugging Annie’s lifeless body.
She felt terrified. Annie was the only person she could trust... the one who truly cared for her. But now, she was gone. It was so hard for Eve to accept this.
The sobs wracked her body, barely allowing a breath to be drawn. She felt suffocated as her heart constricted inside her chest.
Everything that happened there passed through her like a hurricane. She lost someone precious and she blamed herself for that. She was left alone once again in this cruel world.
Eve clenched her fists tightly and her eyes set ablaze.
’Alaric Stormholt! I won’t forgive you for this. I’ll make sure to avenge Annie’s death. I won’t allow you to get what you want.’ Eve made a vow to herself.
She continued crying, mourning for Annie’s death when suddenly she heard the rushing footsteps.
"I found them! I found them! They’re here!" The bandit called out his comrades. They were back to the waterfalls.
"Capture her! Now!" The man with the scar ordered his fellow bandits.
Eve stopped crying, wiping her tears using the back of her palm. She gently laid Annie’s body on the ground as she grabbed a big rock.
She would rather fight them to death, instead of crying in fear. She was tired of being weak.
"Haha! You are becoming braver, Princess. Are you planning to fight us using that mere stone?" The man holding the crossbow mocked her. He even flaunted his weapon.
But Eve remained still, not budging in her spot. Her anger and her sadness fueled her determination to fight them.
’They want me dead. But I won’t allow them to kill me easily without a fight.’ Eve grabbed another stone using her left hand.
The leader of the group just motioned his men to finish her as soon as possible. And without further ado, the two men holding a sword and a dagger charged forward, pouncing on their little prey.
However, before they could reach her spot, their paths were blocked by the flying arrows. They stepped back to dodge the arrows in time.
"Whoa! Who the hell is that?" The man holding a sword looked around, searching for the hidden attacker.
The five men became more cautious and alert.
"Who are you?! Show yourself! You coward!" The man with a scar yelled, challenging the person who shot the arrows.
Eve also darted her gaze, wondering who the person was. Someone just intervened to protect her.
They heard the crackling sound nearby as someone stepped on the dry leaves. The noise of the wind was howling through the trees. A black figure flashed from the trees.
Not wasting any more time, a man wearing a black robe jumped from the tree and ended up landing behind Eve.
"You are the real coward, attacking a harmless lady like her." A deep cold voice was heard.
"Shut up! You are going to die here as well!"
The five bandits narrowed their eyes on the man in a black robe. They were about to attack him when the man revealed his face.
The bandits halted on their steps the moment they recognized him.
"Stop!" The leader warned his comrades. "He is the Infamous Black Hunter!"
The man in a black robe smirked, waving his hand to acknowledge his title. "I’m glad you know me."
He swiftly moved, pulling Eve to his side. He shielded her with his body. "Don’t be afraid. I’m here to protect you," he softly whispered to her.
The man in a black robe unsheathed his sword, getting ready to fight and defend if ever the bandits would make a move.
"What are we going to do now, Boss? Should I shoot him with my bow?" The man holding the crossbow consulted their leader.
The leader hit his head. "Fool! Do you want us to die? He is someone we can’t offend. He is not only a hunter of animals but he is a hunter of men! He is a hunter of notorious criminals and people with high bounties!"
"A crossbow won’t kill him easily. Even from that distance, he can slice your arrow using his sharp sword!" The man with a scar chimed in. He was familiar with the combat skill of this Infamous Black Hunter.
"Let’s try to negotiate," the leader replied back.
"Black Hunter! Just like you, we are just doing our job. This woman has nothing to do with you. Why are you protecting her?" The leader of the bandits began negotiating with the hunter.
"If you want... we can share fifty percent of our money from this mission with you. Just hand her over to us."
Eve suddenly stepped back, distancing herself from the man whom they called the Black Hunter. She couldn’t trust anyone at this moment.
But the man in a black robe immediately held her arm, pulling her close to him.
"Don’t leave my side," he firmly told her. "Don’t worry. I’m not handing you over to them," he reassured her.
Eve could only watch his back in confusion. She didn’t know why this man wanted to protect her.
The man in a black robe cast a sharp deathly glare at them. He tightened his grip on his sword, preparing to launch an attack.
"No more negotiation. I’ll just give you ten seconds to save your lives. Either you will fight me or retreat now. It’s your choice." His deep voice carried a warning.
They knew he wasn’t joking. He was hell serious!
"Ten..."
"Nine..."
He started counting.
The bandits exchanged glances with one another, asking themselves what they should do.
"Eight..."
"Seven..."
"What are you waiting for?" The leader yelled at his comrades. "We shall retreat!"
After hearing their leader’s cue, the bandits started to run away as fast as they could. They couldn’t afford to lose their lives on this mission. Black Hunter was merciless when killing people! He won’t hesitate to kill them on the spot.
Meanwhile, Eve couldn’t believe it. The bandits chose to run away instead of fighting the man in a black robe.
’Is he that strong? Even though he was outnumbered by them, they refused to fight them altogether.’
’Who is this–’
Eve’s train of thought was interrupted when her eyes met his gaze. His clear blue eyes captivated her for a moment.
