Chapter 148: The Mission Begins
Five Days Later: First Assassination Attempt Begins...
At Zephyra’s Castle...
Using the map provided by Commander Kevin, Alaric’s team managed to infiltrate the castle. They passed through the secret tunnel. They divided their team into four groups. Lambert, who was an expert in lockpicking, and Franco, who was an expert in disguise, partnered up as they entered the castle first.
The two disguised themselves as royal servants. They roamed around the palace, searching for King Zaraki’s chamber. Alaric would make a move once most of the people inside the palace were already sleeping.
The two brothers– Miles and Dillon, were also dispatched an hour after Franco and Lambert entered the palace hall. Alaric, Caleb, and Randolf were waiting for the right time to launch a sneak attack. The go signal would be coming from either Franco’s team or Dillon’s team.
Miles and Dillon happened to pass by the garden. That’s when they saw Lady Sylvana, the Seer of Eldara.
"Brother! Brother! Look! That’s her. Sylvana, the Seer. I thought she was taken as a hostage. But it seems like she is enjoying her stay in this palace." Miles whispered to his brother, Dillon.
They observed Sylvana from their hiding spot. Sylvana was talking with Erika. Erika was playing her flute while Sylvana listened to her. The two ladies were giggling from time to time.
"Brother, you should go ahead. I have to find a chance to talk to Lady Sylvana. She needs to know that Eldara Knights are coming to save her," Miles said, urging his brother to continue searching the palace.
"Miles, we are not sure if Sylvana is a hostage or not. What if she already betrayed her kingdom? We should not intervene. The Eldara’s Knights will come to save her. We don’t need to get involved. We have our priority mission." Dillon reminded Miles. He was against the idea of approaching Sylvana, letting her know about their presence.
"But brother, I can’t ignore her. Eldara is our allied kingdom. We need to help them reclaim their Seer." Miles didn’t give up. He wanted to convince his brother. "Please allow me to stay and talk to her. I’ll just give her a warning. Promise. I will be careful."
Dillon could only sigh in defeat. He couldn’t refuse his kind-hearted brother. He knew that his youngest brother had a pure intention to help.
"Fine. I’ll have to return and inform General Alaric about this. Maybe, they can also help us free Lady Sylvana. You can also ask her for more information. She’d been here for several days. She might possess useful information about King Zaraki’s habit."
After discussing their moves, the two brothers separated from each other. Miles stayed behind the post, concealing his presence from the two ladies. He waited for the chance to talk to Sylvana alone.
On the other hand, Dillon returned to the secret tunnel where Alaric, Caleb, and Randolf were standing by. He was on his way to the secret tunnel when he caught a glimpse of a familiar figure. Chancellor Igrin of Eldara was also in the palace.
Dillon paused on his track as he observed Chancellor Igrin secretly. "Whoa, I didn’t expect that Zephyra would treat their hostages as honored guests. They didn’t imprison them. This is so shocking."
’Should I approach Chancellor Igrin as well? Do I have to tell her about tonight’s mission?’ Dillon pondered to himself.
He contemplated for a moment. He was going to approach the chancellor when a knight showed up. He stayed hidden while listening to their conversation.
"Rufus, how’s the preparation of the army? I have to go back to Eldara. King Constantine is planning to abdicate the throne to Crown Prince Cassian. I must stop this from happening. Princess Thalia must be named as his successor." Chancellor Igrin paced back and forth, feeling troubled. He was afraid that Chancellor Gustav would never honor his promise.
Commander Rufus just let out a soft chuckle, tapping his shoulder. "Calm down, Igrin. Don’t be impatient. Chancellor Gustav would never break his promise. He will send you with the army once we capture Princess Eve. We are just waiting for this to happen."
Dillon gasped, covering his mouth when he heard the exchanges of conversation between Chancellor Igrin and Commander Rufus.
’Oh no! This is not good. The chancellor of Eldara is trying to do a rebellion with the help of Zephyra’s army. They want to steal the throne from Crown Prince Cassian, making Princess Thalia the successor. I can’t believe this. He made a deal with Kingdom Zephyra.’
"Damn! They are also targeting Princess Eve. They want to capture her. I have to inform General Alaric about this!"
Dillon didn’t waste his time. He immediately left his hiding spot, heading to the secret tunnel. He needed to warn General Alaric. Princess Eve might be in danger if she stayed here in Kingdom Zephyra.
Meanwhile, back to the garden area, Erika finally said goodnight to Sylvana. The two ladies had to go back to their respective quarters. Miles followed Sylvana secretly until she was alone in her chamber.
Knock! Knock!
The knocking sound of the door caught Sylvana’s attention who had just entered the room. She wondered if Erika had forgotten something and she went back to see her. She shook her head helplessly before opening the door.
"Erika did you forget–" Sylvana didn’t finish her words as a male servant greeted her sight.
"Lady Sylvana! Can I talk to you? I have something important to tell you. Don’t be afraid. I’m an ally, not your enemy," Miles said spontaneously.
"Who are you?" she frowned, sizing up the unfamiliar servant. He looked new. ’An ally? What the hell is he talking about?’
Miles entered her chamber and shut the door while signaling her to be quiet. Sylvana watched him in puzzlement.
"I’m Miles, a knight from Kingdom Averion," he introduced himself.
Sylvana was taken aback for a moment upon hearing his words. Her eyes widened in shock.
’If he is from Averion, does it mean... General Alaric’s team is also here in the palace. They are going to implement their assassination mission.’
Sylvana glanced at Miles, realizing that he was still a young knight. ’Poor guy. He is going to die here tonight. Their mission is bound to fail. They won’t be able to escape. Some of them will die.’
"We heard from Eldara’s knights that you were captured by the enemy. Crown Prince Cassian sent his elite warriors to rescue you. So don’t worry, Lady Sylvana. They are going to be here. We helped them enter the border gate." Miles informed her, giving her a reassuring smile.
’He is so naive. Why is he telling me this? He should worry about himself and his comrade,’ Sylvana thought to herself.
"If we succeed in our mission tonight, we will also help you escape. So don’t be afraid."
Sylvana frowned deeply. She couldn’t believe that this young warrior was trying to comfort her.
"I have to leave now, Lady Sylvana. I still have work to do. Don’t leave this chamber. I will inform others that you are here. Wait for us, okay? We will definitely save you."
Miles was about to leave her chamber when Sylvana stopped him. She was debating within herself, whether to tell him about her vision and try to warn him.
"Why did you come here? Aren’t you afraid that letting me know about your presence might jeopardize your mission? Are you stupid?" Sylvana asked, feeling annoyed.
Miles just smiled sheepishly, scratching his face. The young knight looked so innocent yet genuine.
"Of course, I trust you. I know you’ve been worrying about your safety because you became a hostage here. Crown Prince Cassian and the Kingdom Eldara want to save you. Don’t worry. This won’t affect our mission tonight. General Alaric is on our side!"
Sylvana shook her head while clenching her fists. This young knight was very stupid. However, his sincerity affected her. She didn’t expect that he would care about her even though she wasn’t from Kingdom Averion.
’Averion’s knights are loyal to the alliance. But our own people betrayed Crown Prince Cassian!’ Sylvana was angered by that thought. Chancellor Igrin wanted to steal the throne from Prince Cassian. This was something she couldn’t endure.
"Young knight, listen to me carefully. I’m a Seer so you have to believe me. This is the least I can do for you and your team." Sylvana had made up her mind.
Miles could only bob his head as he listened to her attentively.
"You should retreat now! Leave this palace. I have a vision. Your mission is bound to fail. Your comrades will be in danger. They might die."
Miles was stupefied upon hearing that. He believed her because she was a Seer. She could see a glimpse of their future.
"I have one request, young knight. If you escape here, please tell Crown Prince Cassian that Chancellor Igrin is a traitor. He wants to steal the throne from him, using Princess Thalia. He made the deal with Zephyra’s chancellor. He also disclosed to them about your Assassination Mission. You have to leave now!"
