The Herbal Scents of Farm Life -
Chapter 107 - 107 107 Madness
Chapter 107: Chapter 107: Madness! Chapter 107: Chapter 107: Madness! …
In another part of the Gong family’s residence, Old Master Gong, who had been roused from his slumber by Constable Wei, now found himself drenched in cold sweat under the stare of a few deputies.
“How could this be? How could it be missing?” He murmured to himself nonstop, unable to believe that the corpse he had personally buried could simply disappear.
That was the corpse of someone who had contracted a peculiar disease; this was literally a matter of life and death for him.
Constable Wei had said it himself: if someone with ulterior motives got away with the corpse, the consequences would reach far beyond just Hongling Town. Wouldn’t the county chief have his head then?
He couldn’t even bear to think about such a situation. If such consequences were to unfold, how would he live his remaining days?
At this moment, he was filled with regret, regretful of his own foolish belief that burning the corpse would bring him bad luck, making his ensuing life difficult.
But now, as it was, the corpse was causing him nothing but trouble.
“Constable…Constable Wei, I really don’t know anything, anything at all.” He weakly looked at Constable Wei, pleading his innocence.
“If you don’t know, then who would? That’s your family’s ancestral tomb, do you want me to guard it for you?” With just one stern glance from Constable Wei, Old Master Gong was startled enough to fall back in his chair.
“Old Master Gong, you should know, if the corpse of Third Young Master Gong is indeed stolen, the magnitude of this matter would be substantial. I fear even the county chief may face repercussions before the prefect.
Now, consider, if the county chief faced repercussions, what fate awaits you?”
“This… this…”
Old Master Gong swallowed hard, wiping the cold sweat dripping down his forehead.
If it came to that, wouldn’t he meet a gruesome end? After all, this was a situation caused by the Gong family. Not only would he be held accountable, but his whole family might face the death sentence.
“Constable Wei, about my son’s corpse… I truly don’t know how it vanished. Who on earth would violate a corpse? It’s simply…”
Preposterous!
However, his last few words were left unsaid, as Constable Wei interrupted him harshly.
“Old Man Gong, don’t try to pull the wool over my eyes. Originally, I instructed you to cremate the Third Young Master’s corpse. But you insisted on preserving the Feng Shui of your home, even promising to bear all responsibility if anything goes wrong. Do you remember that?”
He asked Old Master Gong coldly.
“If you don’t remember, I have a promise letter with your handprint right here. Do you need me to refresh your memory?”
Luckily, he was no fool. When the Gong Family adamantly refused to cremate their son’s body, he had them sign a promise letter. They vowed that, should any trouble arise, the Gong family would shoulder it all.
This way, the culpability of the county chief would be significantly lessened.
“I…”
Upon hearing the mention of the promise letter, Old Master Gong turned deathly pale and swallowed hard again.
“What ‘I…I…’? Spit it out! Where did you hide your Third Master’s corpse! Do I have to drag you out before the citizens of Hongling Town?!” Constable Wei lost his patience and roared at him.
The next moment, terrified, Old Master Gong fell to his knees and began to weep bitterly.
