Chapter 234: The King And The Healer’s Plan
"What nonsense is this?" Kyren’s voice thundered through the room as frustration consumed him. "Why do you keep relenting to his request? Are you already on his side?"
The grand duke’s scolding grew in intensity as he vented his anger upon hearing Kiev’s audacious request relayed by Rafe. Having just informed his wife about his upcoming departure, Kyren had been summoned by his brother, King Kyden, to the private library.
"I am the one who agreed to it," King Kyden interjected before the healer could respond to the grand duke’s outburst.
Kyren grunted in annoyance.
"Is this how you repay me after I decided to go to war on your behalf?" he questioned, his tone laced with disappointment and anger.
"Kyren, please... I have no intention of belittling your contribution. Believe me, even if no one makes the request, I still think it would be best for Anna to stay here. Shouldn’t I be responsible as her guardian when you’re not around?" the king reasoned, attempting to persuade his brother.
Kyren tightly pressed his lips together, torn between his disdain for Kiev’s request and the logic behind his brother’s words. However, the fact that it came from the Mederian Prince only deepened his reluctance to agree.
"My knights will be with Anna. They can take good care of her when I’m not around," the grand duke asserted.
"Listen to me, Kyren," the king responded with concern. "Even if you leave a hundred knights to escort her, it still won’t be the same. A guardian’s responsibility is not equivalent to that of mere escorts. You understand this well, as it is the law of our kingdom. Furthermore, I have something in mind," he continued, capturing the attention of both Kyren and Rafe.
"What is it?" the grand duke inquired, his curiosity piqued.
Rafe, too, turned to the king, eager to learn about his plan.
"During your duel, Princess Callis mentioned a golden barrier that protected you. Doesn’t that strike you as peculiar?" the king asked, his expression thoughtful.
"She might have been bluffing," Kyren replied sceptically.
"Pardon me, Your Highness, but I don’t think so. She claimed it reflected her brother’s magic attack on you. Although we didn’t witness the barrier or the reflected lightning ourselves, we did see Prince Kiev stumbling to the ground and screaming in pain. When you and His Majesty left, she kept asking about it. I believe there’s something they saw that we didn’t," Rafe explained, recounting the events to the best of his knowledge.
"Exactly," the king affirmed. "Rafe told me they thought you were a magic practitioner like them. Sir Navin informed them of your speciality, and they were taken aback by it. They found possessing such sensing capabilities peculiar for someone without innate magical abilities."
"My unique ability is to perceive individuals with magical attributes within my vicinity. However, as the distance increases, my senses weaken and become susceptible to fluctuations when magic is being performed at a certain range. It’s truly perplexing that despite spending considerable time with them, I couldn’t detect their magical abilities," Kyren admitted.
"According to them, they can hide their mana lines from other magic practitioners, and only a strong magic practitioner can detect them. That’s why you didn’t notice it earlier," Rafe explained.
"That golden barrier she mentioned... Perhaps it is somehow related to the binding spell cast on you. Maybe they have knowledge or means to assist with it," the king suggested, contemplating the potential connection.
"I’m not sure. The spell was cast on me by Her Imperial Highness, the direct descendant of the Ro’an Emperor. There is no way the Mederians could undo it," Kyren responded.
"They might not be able to, but their extensive magical abilities could provide insights or lead us to a solution," Rafe added, offering a glimmer of hope.
"Rafe is right. I intended for them to stay so I could further investigate their knowledge on this matter. Having Anna here would also serve as an attraction for them to remain at the palace," the king revealed his plan, emphasising the potential benefits.
"You want to use my wife as bait?" Kyren’s concern and protectiveness for Anna were evident in his tone.
"Of course not! The safety of Anna is paramount. However, it would be best for her to stay in the palace for her own well-being. Additionally, if we can find a solution to your spell, there is a chance for you to have an heir. Don’t you want to have a child with Anna?" the king reasoned, tapping into Kyren’s deepest desires.
The grand duke fell silent, his mind filled with conflicting thoughts. He recalled the frustration on Anna’s face when he told her he didn’t want any children. He yearned to erase that look and envision a future where they could share the joy of starting a family together.
"Do you think it’s possible?" Kyren’s voice softened, a flicker of hope kindling within him.
"It’s worth a try. We won’t be losing anything," the king persisted, continuing to persuade Kyren.
After a brief moment of contemplation, the grand duke finally relented.
"Fine. But only under the condition that my knights will serve as her escorts and stay at the palace as well, and if Anna wishes to return to the mansion occasionally, you must permit it," Kyren stipulated, ensuring his wife’s comfort and freedom of choice.
"Agreed! Thank you for your cooperation," King Kyden expressed his gratitude, a smile adorning his face. "I will make arrangements for you and your wife to stay in separate rooms. Additionally, your presence is required here to prepare for your departure."
"What? You’re putting us in different rooms again?" Kyren’s responded frustratedly.
Both the king and Rafe exchanged glances, offering no immediate explanation. The grand duke grunted in annoyance.
"It’s not like we don’t know that you’ll find your way into her bedroom at night through the secret route, just as you did last time," the king teased, lightening the mood.
Kyren’s ears reddened further at the remark.
"I’ll just turn a blind eye to that and pretend it never happened. Also, I will continue to do the same in the future. Let’s just show them that we’re adhering to the rules. They wouldn’t know, anyway," King Kyden added.
"Fine!" Kyren declared. "I’ll agree with what you want. Now let me go and focus on my affairs right now, Your Majesty."
"Surely, brother. You’re excused."
With permission, Kyren strode out of the king’s private library, leaving King Kyden and Rafe behind. The healer’s gaze followed the grand duke until he disappeared from sight. Seizing the opportunity, the healer opened his mouth and addressed the king.
"Your Majesty, there’s something I wish to report regarding His Highness the Grand Duke," Rafe began.
"What is it, Rafe?" the king inquired.
"I know this may sound perplexing, but I believe he is in love with Lady Raychard," the healer disclosed.
"I am fully aware of that," the king responded calmly.
"You noticed it too?" Rafe questioned, slightly surprised.
"Of course I did. He’s my twin, and we have grown up together. He has never exhibited such behaviour towards any woman throughout his entire life," the king explained.
"Don’t you think it’s weird given his circumstances? He confided in me that the night he brought Lady Raychard back to the camp was the first time he experienced such intense desire for a woman," Rafe revealed, seeking the king’s perspective on the matter.
"He told you that? I only knew he couldn’t feel love. I never realised the spell would bind him in such a way. How peculiar indeed," the king expressed his surprise at the revelation. "Could it be that Anna is a descendant of the Ro’an Emperor?"
"No, she is not," Rafe responded definitively. "She lacks the physical features and abilities associated with them, and her constitution is quite weak. It completely contrasts the traits of the Ro’an Emperor’s lineage."
"You’re right," the king agreed, pondering the situation. "There must be more to this than meets the eye. I believe the Mederians are hiding something from us."
"Yes, I have the same intuition," Rafe confirmed.
"Prince Kiev and Princess Callis seem to trust you despite having only recently met you. I think it’s crucial for us to investigate further. Can you conduct this investigation discreetly?" the king asked, entrusting Rafe with the task.
"Yes, Your Majesty. I have always been responsible for finding the solution to the binding spell. I’ll do my best!"
"Good! Let’s proceed with it. I want Anna to conceive Kyren’s child as soon as possible. That way, Prince Kiev won’t be able to take her away," said the king, realising how important it was to keep the princess in Cassian.
"Even if the spell is broken, it will take some time for her to conceive, given that His Highness is about to leave for some time and the lady’s body condition," Rafe pointed out.
"I will find another excuse to prolong the Mederians’ stay and postpone the next duel. We should seize this opportunity and make the most of it," the king declared. "As for Anna’s condition, I leave it to your expertise."
King Kyden’s eyes were full of hope.
"This is something I must do for my brother. He deserves to find happiness with the woman he loves."
"Yes, Your Majesty," Rafe acknowledged, understanding the importance of their mission and its significance for Kyren’s future.
