The Grand Duke's Soulmate -
Chapter 126: A Request For Alliance
Chapter 126: A Request For Alliance
The Bargesians entered the palace’s main building. As they made their way along the majestic hallway, Brone’s eyes wandered, taking in the grandeur of the palace’s interior.
The walls were adorned with intricate tapestries. The ceiling, a masterpiece of elaborate carvings and frescoes, stretched high above them, evoking a sense of awe-inspiring splendour.
As they approached the palace hallway, it became apparent that its grandeur far surpassed that of Ardel’s or Barges’s castles. The opulence on display indicated that the King of Cassian was undoubtedly wealthier than even Kaizer himself.
The sheer size of the surrounding area alone was double that of Ardel’s castle. Brone’s mind began to wander, envisioning the riches they would acquire once they successfully raided this prosperous land.
Upon reaching the imposing doors of the throne hall, the chamberlain announced their arrival. The doors swung open, revealing the magnificent sight that awaited them. Brone took confident strides along the path leading to the king’s elevated dais.
There, seated before him, was a man with golden blonde hair and deep blue eyes, exuding both charm and composure.
"Greetings, Your Majesty," Brone spoke with profound respect, bowing profoundly before the king.
His subordinates followed suit, offering their own reverent salutations.
"Greetings. Welcome to Cassian."
"Allow me to introduce myself. I am Lord Brone Morro, serving as the ambassador of Ardel," Brone began, projecting an air of confidence.
"Accompanying me are my dedicated escorts, who ensure my safety and assist in my diplomatic endeavours," he continued, acknowledging the presence of his loyal team.
The king nodded with a gesture.
"So, I’ve read your letters, and it intrigues me to ask. When did this change of succession occur? What happened to the Adhemars?" asked King Kyden.
"Regrettably, Your Majesty, the Adhemar dynasty of Ardel met a tragic end two years ago in a devastating shipwreck. The previous king and queen suffered a fatal death in the incident, and their only son, the crown prince, was lost in the sea. The kingdom has been in mourning ever since. Our new king, who previously served as the regent and held the position of Prime Minister, assumed the throne a few months ago, following the conclusion of the mourning period," Brone explained, his tone tinged with a note of regret.
"Yes... I recall hearing about that incident some time ago. Do they not have any relatives within the same family who could inherit the throne?" the king inquired curiously.
"There are indeed blood relatives, Your Majesty. However, due to Ardel’s laws and legislation, individuals of illegitimate birth are barred from bearing the royal surname or holding a royal title. Consequently, the court deemed them ineligible for succession. Thus, Lord Kaizer Ronan, deemed the most suitable and preferred candidate for the position, was chosen," Brone clarified.
"I understand... News from Ardel rarely reaches us, as we are not neighbouring kingdoms and lack political ties," the king acknowledged.
"That is precisely why I have come, Your Majesty. My purpose is to forge a political and business relationship between our nations," Brone stated, emphasising the main reason for his visit to Cassian.
King Kyden’s expression turned brooding as he responded, "This is a significant and unexpected request. None of the four kingdoms have ever made such a proposition before."
"Yes, I understand that this may appear sudden," Brone acknowledged.
"His Majesty King Kaizer Ronan embodies benevolence and wisdom. He is well aware of the historical discrepancies between Cassian and the other kingdoms on the continent. However, he wishes to foster neutrality, believing that the past should not dictate the present. His ultimate goal is to prioritise peace over war and to govern with fairness and justice," the Bargesian leader explained, highlighting King Ronan’s noble intentions.
"Really? Is that his sole motivation?" the king inquired, seeking further insight.
"In truth, Ardel has recently faced persistent harassment from the Bargesians due to an ongoing border dispute. Recognising the need for a strong ally in the event of a potential conflict, His Majesty seeks to establish a steadfast partnership. Cassian, known for its strength and feared by those in the southern regions, is perceived as the ideal ally," Brone revealed, shedding light on the strategic considerations.
King Kyden smiled. Aside from the initial proposal, he already doubted that the king of Ardel had other intentions.
"I understand. However, I might need to consult with my ministers in the royal court before agreeing," the king responded diplomatically.
Brone continued, emphasising the dire situation unfolding along Ardel’s southern border. "The situation in Ardel’s southern border has grown increasingly precarious. The Bargesians’ territory has suffered a decline over the years, leading their people to lay claim to Ardel’s lands as their own. Without Your Majesty’s assistance, Ardel would face significant challenges defending itself."
Curiosity sparked in King Kyden’s eyes as he sought further clarification. "What about Dracor and Galicia? Have they not been staunch allies of Ardel in the past?"
"They were indeed loyal allies, especially when the Adhemar dynasty held power. However, with the change in kingship, the dynamics have shifted," Brone explained, highlighting the altered circumstances.
"I see... That does make sense," King Kyden acknowledged, beginning to grasp the rationale behind Ardel’s appeal for a new alliance.
"If I may inquire, Your Majesty, how long will it take for you to reach a decision?" Brone respectfully asked.
"I will bring this matter before the court in a few days. Our usual gathering to discuss internal and foreign affairs occurs on Monday mornings. However, considering the significance of this decision involving another kingdom on the continent, it may require additional time for deliberation," King Kyden replied, indicating the complexities involved in reaching a verdict.
Brone nodded understandingly, acknowledging the delicate dynamics between Cassian and the other kingdoms on the continent.
"I appreciate your consideration, Your Majesty. I implore you to give His Majesty King Ronan a chance. As a gesture of gratitude, he is willing to sponsor individuals fluent in the Ro’an language in Cassian to pursue their studies in Engarth. In return, we are prepared to share our knowledge in the field of treatment and medicine for mutual benefit."
The proposition piqued King Kyden’s interest.
"That is indeed intriguing! Engarth is renowned for having the most profound Medical University on the continent. This opportunity would allow my people to broaden their knowledge in this field," he remarked, clearly drawn to the idea of enhancing his kingdom’s expertise in medicine.
"Engarth, once the capital of the Ro’an Empire, holds a vast collection of books written in the Ro’an language, surpassing the libraries of other kingdoms," Brone remarked, bringing light on the city’s historical significance.
"If you agree, His Majesty King Ronan is willing to express his loyalty to the Ro’an Empire," he added.
King Kyden’s response carried a note of scepticism. "That is a rather belated pledge, considering the circumstances."
Brone acknowledged the king’s sentiment. "I understand that we can’t change the past, but we can make a better future."
King Kyden’s eyes sparkled with recognition. "Funny enough, I have heard the same quote before," he remarked, reminiscing about the words Rafe had spoken on numerous occasions.
Brone smiled in response. "It is a famous quote in Ardel. The person who shared it with you must have spent considerable time in our kingdom."
"He certainly did," King Kyden replied.
"That would conclude the explanation of our visit, Your Majesty. We shall patiently await your answer until Monday arrives. In the meantime, would it be possible for our delegation to reside here in the palace during our stay?" Brone inquired.
King Kyden reassured him, "Certainly, there is no problem with that. My chamberlain will make the necessary arrangements."
Turning to Charles, the king nodded and conveyed his instructions to the chamberlain. Charles quickly acknowledged the order.
"Before you go, there is something I would like to inquire about," the king suddenly said.
Brone’s eyes lit up with curiosity as he responded, "Please, go ahead. What is it?"
King Kyden began delicately.
"I have noticed that over the past several years, people from Ardel have been visiting Cassian for various reasons. However, from my observations, it seems that you and your men do not resemble typical Ardelians. I apologise if this comes across as impolite."
"Ah... We hear that all the time. The truth is, our ancestors resided along the southern border, and undoubtedly, we do carry some of the southern blood in our veins, which gives us a resemblance to them. However, despite our shared heritage, we have never been recognised by the true Bargesians. We were considered as individuals of mixed blood and subjected to harsh treatment. Even the pure-blooded Ardelians held negative attitudes towards us," Brone revealed.
"Fortunately, His Majesty, King Ronan, extended a welcoming hand to us and acknowledged our talents rather than focusing on our bloodline. In his wisdom, he saw beyond societal prejudices and valued our contributions. As a result, we pledged our unwavering loyalty to him, for he was the one who recognised our worth. Our loyalty lies solely with him," he added.
"I understand," King Kyden replied, his expression empathetic. "Discrimination based on one’s bloodline is a deeply unjust practice. Hearing that King Ronan recognised your talents and embraced you regardless of your heritage is heartening. Loyalty to such a compassionate leader is truly commendable."
Brone nodded appreciatively, his expression reflecting gratitude for the understanding shown by King Kyden.
"Rest assured, Lord Morro, you and your men will not face such treatment in Cassian lands. We value merit and character above all else. Even if you are representatives from the previous Adhemar Dynasty, we will extend respect and courtesy. It is worth mentioning that Ardel once came to our aid during the Laradie plague, and we remember the kindness shown to us," King Kyden assured, his voice filled with sincerity.
Brone bowed respectfully. "Thank you, Your Majesty. Your words are reassuring and deeply appreciated."
King Kyden nodded in acknowledgement, his regal demeanour reflecting his genuine desire for unity and mutual respect between their kingdoms.
"You’re welcome. Charles, please arrange for a servant to lead them to their accommodations so they can rest," he instructed.
"Yes, Your Majesty. Gentlemen, please follow me," Charles responded, gesturing for Brone and his men to accompany him.
Brone, showing his gratitude, nodded and bowed respectfully to the king once more before departing with his subordinates.
As they walked down the hallway, Charles opened his mouth and said, "The guest rooms are situated in the palace’s east wing. I will also instruct the servants to bring your horses to the stable there," Charles informed them.
Brone, however, interjected politely, "No need, Mr Chamberlain. Just lead the way. Our horses are familiar with us and may become agitated if handled by unfamiliar individuals. We will first go and get them."
Charles understood Brone’s concern and respected their wishes. "Very well then," he acquiesced, acknowledging his demand.
As Brone and his men made their way to retrieve their horses, their attention was captivated by a grand procession approaching through the main gate. A royal carriage adorned with the emblem of a white Griffin signalled the arrival of the awaited attendees for the king’s scheduled audience.
Curiosity sparked among Brone’s men, and Derek couldn’t help but ask, "Who’s that?"
His eyes gleaming excitedly, Charles replied, "It’s the royal family! The Grand Duke of Gerhard has arrived."
His duty as a chamberlain momentarily took precedence over his role as their guide. "Lord Morro, please forgive me, but I must greet them. I will leave you under the care of the palace servants for now."
Brone’s displeasure was apparent, but he chose not to voice his concerns, wary of raising suspicions. He had adeptly sidestepped the king’s previous comment about their appearance.
"Very well, you may go," he responded.
As Charles summoned two attending servants, they swiftly turned their attention to the Bargesians, ready to assist them.
"Let’s go," Brone ordered, purposefully averting his gaze from the approaching royal procession.
He took the lead, his back turned to the grand spectacle, and his men followed suit, maintaining their focus on their own mission within the palace walls.
