Chapter 312: 5.11.5 Mist.
Following the path, it didn’t take long for them to come in front of a netted boundary with some soldiers walking along the lines. It was easy to see they were on the right track.
However, unlike the time when Remira had entered the Ruins, the soldiers were more attentive than before. Their eyes were sharp like crows were looking for any weird sound or activity in their line of sight.
A change brought by none other than Baldar, who directly entered through the front door while warning them about intruders that were already inside, and then ordering them to keep watch if anyone else might try to enter.
"No worries, they are mostly mortal," Sheva said from the side, as her tall body suddenly hunched down and disappeared into the newly grown forest.
Although the tree was not as tall, her adaptability and experiences from her Guerilla days were at work here. After informing the two to stay down and not make a sound, she slithered into the encampment and took out one of the guards easily by punching the back of his head.
Which seemed like the perfect time for them to move. But Sheva didn’t just gestured the two to remain in their place, while she waited for a bit. And another soldier walked to the same area, which was taken out just as fast.
"??" Surprising both Henry and Crow.
From their perspective, she was hiding in plain sight, but why were these soldiers unable to act on time?
"Without her, we might have failed," Crow spoke, with Henry nodding from the side.
After taking out two men, another soldier soon came. But he was not as oblivious as he appeared. His job was to keep watch over these watchmen, and seeing that one of them hadn’t arrived on time, he arrived in the area while trotting his rifle, ready to kill someone.
’A gun.’ Sheva was enthralled, taking advantage of her position, she grabbed the man from his back and before he could make any kind of sound, she suffocated him. Causing his body to struggle for a bit before falling down.
’Bolt-Action, a total of three magazines.’ She said, while looting the unconscious guard before she used a machete that she had looted to slice open the fence using her foot as leverage and saying. "We have 5 mins at most, move."
It would be good if she could try and take down some other soldiers, who knows if they have more ammo or even a handgun with them?
But she can’t be too greedy at the moment, this is enough. So after checking up on the bullets she had at hand, she moved forward, tracking the negligible steps she could. And through these, she had been able to ascertain one thing.
"There are at least four people ahead of us."
"Good, the more the merrier."
After leaving the area of the guardpost, it didn’t take long for them to reach the area of the ruins. However, they didn’t move forward, as there were still people ahead of them. Or so they thought. "There is no one," Sheva said, after checking the ruins from the outskirts, she easily determined that there was no one there. Which was odd.
"Isn’t this a bit small?" It was neither Crow nor Sheva that said those words, but Henry who appeared confused when looking at the small street followed by a temple in the middle.
"What do you mean it’s too small?" Crow asked, obviously a bit interested in Henry’s words.
Because it was easy to see that this place really didn’t appear to be any special. There were even some birds nesting on the roofs of some of these ruins, showing how harmless they were.
But Neither Crow nor Sheva considered it safe. Instead, with Henry’s words, the danger of the ruins in their head just increased further.
"The ruins were active for half a decade before being shut down, but it doesn’t even seem big enough to support any exploration for more than a week at this point."
And Henry’s words were correct, it was too small or so it appeared from the surface. "The ones that came earlier than us are nowhere to be seen, meaning this is not all of it," Crow said, being someone who had read too many stories of the past, including legends. He knows how it usually goes in places like this. "Probably a hidden path filled with danger, I would say the path to the real place should be in that temple."
Crow said with pride, taking a step forward into the area of the ruins, but before he could continue his words, the sound around him cut off, making his back feel cold.
"??" He messed up. This was not even the start and he messed up.
"Mist." He didn’t dare to turn around, he just kept moving forward while speeding ahead of the mist that wanted to embrace him from the back. "This." He recalled it but didn’t say much, and leaving the mist in dust, he entered the temple, which seemed to be the only safe place in this whole ruin due to the very fact that the Mist couldn’t enter it at all.
"Phew." It was only then that Crow turned around to see that the mist had consumed the whole door and he couldn’t even see anything outside.
"Hah, I might have made a mistake, coming here," Crow spoke such words before he heard some voices coming from the mist.
A voice that made him turn around and try to look for a way to escape this place. But to his surprise, there was no exit, this was a completely closed-off temple.
Or it’s that he couldn’t find it in all this panic. "They are coming closer." The sounds coming from the mist sounded archaic, and grating to his ears. Leaving Crow no choice but to take out the sword he had hidden in his bag and be ready to face whatever it was coming his way.
And as the silhouettes in the misty gate got denser, a familiar sound came from one of the two figures. "Crow, what are you doing?" It was none other than Henry who asked this question, him being one of the figures, who nonchalantly entered the temple without an issue, followed by Sheva who looked at Crow with deep worry.
"How, how did you walk through the mist? Crow asked with worry, pointing toward the door where the Mist still remained, beckoning him from afar.
But the answer he got in response was. "What mist?" Henry said, giving a look toward the door, just in case he might have missed it, he said. "There is nothing at all."
Sheva on the other hand also gave the outside of the door a perfunctory look, before asking, "The mist you see, is it still at the door?"
"Yes, it followed me, all I could do was hide in this place."
"But in my perspective, there is nothing," Sheva said, explaining in detail what actually happened after Crow had taken one step in the ruin.
"I started to ignore your voices?"
"Yes."
"You really can’t see that mist there?" He asked again and the two confirmed. "Guess, this is what Ruins are like." With a sad laugh, he got up from his seat and then looked toward the two. "Either it’s an illusion of my mind, or for some reason, only I can see it. Whatever it is, it’s better to not walk into it, even if you can’t see it." He made such a decision, which the two ended up agreeing with.
Not to mention, by coming here, their way out was sealed in a way. Or sealed as long as they believed in Crow’s words of the mist. Which in truth, Sheva barely believed. But she kept on the act, she wanted to go in anyway.
"You guys go and look for the true entrance, I.. I will check if this thing is dangerous or not." Crow said, looking at the two, who after some talk left Crow to his own devices, though it was not like they were far from each other, even the temple was very small and they were easily able to see each other from a distance.
"What are you?" crow asked the Mist, putting his finger in and feeling a tinge of warmth inside. "Weird," Crow said after taking out his finger. His finger was not actually warm, but it still felt warm to him in his head.
He planned to put his finger inside again but then stopped. A premonition came to him. If he did it again, something bad might happen to him.
As for what, he doesn’t know. But what he does know is that he can’t enter this mist no matter what happens.
"What kind of temple is this?" Sheva asked Henry, who did not have any concrete answer to begin with, but mostly some rumors of legends.
"I don’t know much about that. All I can say is that this ruin is famous for devouring the living."
Sheva nodded at those words, as her eyes stayed on some hieroglyphics where some sacrificial ritual was taking place. "Sacrifice." She said, making her wonder.
"Look for any bloodstains, no matter how old." She ordered Henry, who was surprised at the order at first, before nodding and then starting to look for it.
Joined by Crow soon after, who came back with a melancholic look and said, "I recall seeing a few drops of it on that floor before." Who soon walked toward the place and then looked at it deeply. "Yes, this might just be it."
