Chapter 304: 5.11.1 Lies for the maid.

Fallen on my doorstep with no worry for the world.

Explains why my precious maid left before I opened the door. She must have seen who was on the other side of the door.

Then there was my bodyguard, who always followed me. She must be keeping an eye on this doorstep as well.

Not to mention Sheva herself. Although I don’t know what was going on in the grand scheme of things. It was a miracle that she was not harmed in anyways while coming here, not even a single sign of injury.

"Fascinating." An intriguing mystery. I was being kept in the dark and used somehow by my boss. As for the kid. "Who are you, kid?" I asked her, but she remained mute and unable to say much besides covering the body of Sheva like a chick defending her dead mother. "I won’t harm her. She came to me for a reason." Giving some words of support to the girl, I helped Sheva by dragging her in my house and dropping her on my bed.

I mean, I dragged her body inside. She was heavier than I had expected, making me wonder just how much she weighed.

"Should exercise more." I thought to myself while waiting for some contact from my Boss, or anyone who might relay to me what to do next.

But nothing of the like happened. She remained asleep while the girl, after eating some food, had also fallen sleep. Leaving me alone to take care of them all. "This is not the kind of adventure I wanted." I then looked at the vial, the blood-strengthening potion that was kept out in the open. "I should hide it." With kids around, I can’t expect them to touch things not their own. So I put the vial in a safe place while going and taking care of the Master for a while.

’Let’s wait and see for now.’

"Unexpectedly, she rushed to Crow instead of the orphanage." The report was not enthralling in the least. Sheva has made a detour and visited Crow instead of going to the ambush site which was the old orphanage. "But no worries, she is in our hands." Putting down the report, he went ahead and entered Baldar’s room which was gloomier than usual.

"Leader, it would seem it worked. She is out and fallen right in our hands." Although Kanha spoke these words, no response came from Baldar. He focused entirely on the reports he had obtained this morning from other members of team two, who were doing their own work in the capital.

"Good." He spoke after a while after being done with his notes. "Her priority was saving the girl and for that, she took him to Crow. Showing her dependency she holds for him in her heart."

"A sign that can be taken advantage of."

"Order Crow, make him find the truth out of her mouth."

"Why can’t we?..."

"No, we won’t harm her. Just ask Crow to handle it, we will not touch her ourselves."

"..." Kanha wanted to say this was not part of the plan, but in the end, he could only sigh and relent to the order.

The worst boss in the eye of an employee is the one who changes his mind often on a whim. Did his boss suddenly obtain some consciousness after doing all those things?

He was the one who chose to burn the orphanage all in an effort to rile up Sheva and in turn Remira. Which he achieved with some tweaks to the plans, but the result had been achieved.

So why stop at the end? Why not go through the full plan after coming so close?

And while Kanha tried to change Baldar’s mind, he got nothing in response besides asking him to focus on Remira who was currently roaming the city with her entourage, looking for random information relating to many forbidden spots around the country and some old legends.

With most of them relating to the close seas, and the fallen city of Quatpotal. Which was actually concerning considering the relationship the one who awakened in Quatpotal had with Yethel.

But was it really the case? The real target?

It could be a distraction. No, it was a distraction considering that they had asked many such questions about many other things. So one can’t be certain which was the true goal of this whole test.

The day was fruitful as far as Remira was concerned. The Blue eyes were famous for collecting information did their best and were able to collect a lot of information, while Rashid, although not as helpful was great when distracting the eyes following them by sending him to the docks and making him ask of some old events from the past.

Resulting in the current situation.

Although it was impossible to say that she was able to hide it all, it doesn’t mean much considering she had obtained what she wanted after all the effort of one day.

However, it was not like this was all done in a day or so. She had prepared for this day for a while. Setting up appointments with some old adventurers and then finding the section of books in the library where the important books were.

Which made her work a lot easier as there was no need to go out of their way and search for this information like a headless chicken.

But it doesn’t mean shit at the end of the day.

"What?"

"I had shot her, but.. But she just walked it off. I couldn’t stop her." The Gray eye’s job is generally to do covert things that are a bit dirty for Blue eyes to do, but they are not as strong as Red eyes who could come out in the open and put up an actual fight.

So the moment he had failed, the young man with Gray eye identity stopped doing a thing and let it play out as he was trained for.

Remira was not that surprised by the fact that Sheva had left. She knew this was going to happen anyway if she were to learn of what happened in the orphanage, it was why she already had done something with Remira.

But what actually surprised her was the mention of a little girl. "What do you mean a survivor of the orphanage? All of them were dead."

"??"

"No, I am sure. It would seem that the woman was able to identify the little girl." As the young man explained how the girl looked, Remira’s eyes turned weird.

She had gone with Sheva to visit the orphanage as well. She remembers all the kids she saw there and among them was also a girl matching the same description. The very same girl that came here.

’A dead girl walking?’ She thought for a minute, before shaking her head. "It has been a trap since the start." By the time Remira had come to the scene of the orphanage, she was already too late. All she found was a burned-down building while the bodies of children who were saved on time had been sent to the hospital. Meaning, she never actually saw the bodies.

"I fell for your trick." Remira knew it, she had been had. If she was smart enough or timely enough, she could have seen the faces of the recovered children, which in turn would have helped her confirm her current suspicions. But in an effort to run away from looking at something so horrific, she had made a fool out of herself.

A mistake that had cost her Sheva.

But she appeared worried on the surface. Her mind was very clear.

’Good thing, I created a contingency.’

"Rest up, we leave for the ruins in a day at most."

"But... but that woman is with them. We should hurry." Rashid said from the side, worried that he might lose this chance.

But Remira didn’t bother with his plea. "Don’t worry, nothing will happen."

*****

"Little girl, can you at least talk and tell me, what this is all about?" I asked the little chick who was a head shorter than me, but considering our races, she was barely nine years old.

"??" Like a bird, she looked at me with curious eyes, before dropping her head back and eating the bread and milk I gave her. "Tell me so that I can help you. Otherwise, I can only consider you an enemy and kick you out."

At the mention of kicking out, she suddenly turned worried and spoke. "No... They sa.. say to stay with her.."

"Who?"

As I asked such a question, a familiar sound of knocking came, startling the little girl. Which was followed by the door opening by the person on the other side. "A new update has just arrived." It was my coward maid, who just came back with a mission update.

"Sigh. Finally." I said with a smile.

A smile that seemed to have scared the little girl, who hid back into Sheva’s bed.

"Hey, I am not a bad man."

"Stop playing with kids, and handle this matter." She ordered while handing me the slip on which some ancient characters were written on it.

"Hmm." Reading this, I couldn’t help but sigh in relief. "It’s a fun mission," I say to the maid. "Take care of the kid and the woman for now. I need to get Henry for this mission."

"?? He is an outsider."

"Hey, I am doing just what this slip has said, nothing more." The Maid couldn’t read the slip, it was written in a cipher that only knew the code to. So what was written was for me to know.
