The General's Wife Wants to Leave -
Chapter 264: "I have seen it..."
Chapter 264: "I have seen it..."
"Are there many people looking at us?" Joanna asked as they walked down the corridor, which was answered with "none" by Canillas.
However, the fact that could not be seen by Joanna, who still had her face buried in her husband’s neck, was that there were already four servants who had just run into them but quickly fled away with their heads lowered, and some covered their mouths with their hands after they did not forget to offer their polite bow.
He did not mean to lie to her, but after some consideration, he felt that he had to, as he knew her nature very well, and he wanted to ease her. Yet it seemed that his wife knew him very well too, as she said, "Just tell me the truth." Her breath tickled against his skin as the words slipped out of her lips.
"If you don’t trust me, why don’t you raise your head and look ahead to find out yourself?" Canillas countered, and he chuckled when Joanna replied to him with, "Said someone who made me unable to do that."
With a smile that could not be seen by Joanna, Canillas chimed in, "There is nothing wrong with a husband caring for his beloved wife. Instead of being shy, you should be proud of that. Just hold your head high, look ahead, and put a smile on your face. Let people see how proud and happy Lady Joanna is to be carried in her precious husband’s arms." His tone was light, as if talking with his shy wife about the current weather.
"But not in this state," argued Joanna, who was not in the mood to talk about the weather.
Canillas might sound as if he was teasing her, but he was not pointless. There was not an empty point in the way he spoke, and Joanna sensed that. However, she was not used to how she appeared at the moment, where she was far from the sense of propriety that she had followed obligingly all her life.
Her current state really made her have no face to look ahead, regardless of the points Canillas uttered at the moment.
Besides, she did not want both she and her mischievous husband to become a topic that was talked about by others, although if that happened, she was sure that it surely would be done behind her back, and there would be a high possibility for her not to hear it herself. Nonetheless, her self-consciousness refused to let that happen.
It was fine if they were in a situation where she had really no choice but to be treated this way by him, like if she could not walk due to certain circumstances. But this was... Joanna was lost for words on how to describe their situation at the moment.
"What’s wrong with ’this state’? We do look like an inseparable, loving couple who live peacefully in harmony." An unabashed reply was again lightly countered to her.
As always, her mischievous husband had a way to break her turbulent concern with his nonchalant demeanor and simple way of thinking. Joanna let out a sigh, realizing that there was nothing she could do if her stubborn husband was in his playful side as well.
"Aren’t you walking too slowly? Can you make it faster?" Thus, she chose to shift the topic, as she also felt that Canillas walked too slowly, as if he wanted to withdraw all attention toward them, shouting out loud that they were indeed an inseparable, loving couple who lived peacefully in harmony.
"I don’t think I am walking slowly," she heard Canillas answer in his bright mood that seemed to be still ongoing.
Perhaps he was right that he actually walked at a normal pace but too slowly for her, who had an urgency to arrive at her room as soon as possible so that she could immediately wash up, attend to her period, and ease her cramped stomach.
More importantly, she was in such a hurry to be away from prying eyes that she was sure existed around them, as she knew well the routine of the servants in her home, which made it impossible to get an empty corridor at this hour.
Yet she appreciated the way Canillas did not tell her the truth, as it surely was one of his efforts to calm her nerves.
"I am heavy. You will get tired later," Joanna said, although she could guess what kind of response she would receive from Canillas when he was in his current mood.
It was then she heard his low chuckle before his low, deep voice rang in her ears. "I can lift two of you in one go." And her prediction on how his reply would be was on point.
She did not forget that he was a soldier with an imposing build and outstanding physical strength, yet it was not time to yield as she felt the intensity of her stomach cramp intensify. "There are so many things you can do rather than exerting your energy to lift a person who definitely can walk."
"Unfortunately, that so many things I wanted to do had been abruptly interrupted because of the unprecedented situation that happened to the person that I am currently lifting and can definitely walk." Canillas sighed heavily in the end, which left Joanna unsure if he was teasing her or being serious, as she could not see the expression on his face.
Nonetheless, the problem was that she unfortunately could not act ignorant to not understand what he was implying, regardless of whether it was a tease or not. Joanna felt a blush spread over her cheeks.
"It is embarrassing," she uttered in response. "I can walk by myself. Don’t do this again in the future." It was her way to once again escape from the topic that made her cheeks flush and her heart race to the main topic that she wanted him to know about, that she was not used either to being treated that way or to such treatment being a public display.
"You already know that you are asking for the impossible." And as predicted, what came to her as the reply was an objection, which was surely not a tease this time.
Joanna let out the nth sigh of resignation. It seemed that there would be no meeting point between his fondness to pamper her with his affection and her inclination to keep that affection personal.
"You don’t need to be shy or wary with me about this matter in the future, Joanna," Canillas said when he found Joanna giving up to stop him from loving her. "It is not the first time I saw blood, though of course it is the first time for me to see that kind of blood," he remarked in a not playful tone, as he had felt enough to ease her with his dry joke, though it seemed to not work well this time, as there were many thoughts chasing one another in his own mind.
Meanwhile, Joanna had her heart skip a beat hearing him talk about her period. It was really embarrassing to her, although he asked her not to. Hence, she said, "It is not proper to let others see something inappropriate to be seen. It is supposed to be hidden."
It had become her point of view based on what had been taught to her, and she had followed it since she got her first period. It was a propriety for menstrual blood to not be seen by others, and all this time only Bianca had ever helped her to attend to her if the period came to her.
"Not between husband and wife, Joanna," was a reply from Canillas in a soft tone, hoping she could be more at ease when she was around him, willing to bare anything to him, particularly after he bared his inner feelings for her.
All he wanted in their relationship was still the same despite the whirlwind of emotions he felt at the moment. It had not changed a bit from the first time he saw her in person, not even after she unveiled her nightmare that became the reason for her keeping her distance from him, pushing him away from her side so many times. A feeling that he realized to be there, dwelling deep inside him, even before he laid his eyes on that very name, her name, Joanna de Lara.
"It is still not proper for you to see," Joanna argued, still in accordance with what she had taught, that even a husband should not see blood that was considered to be dirty from his wife. Further than that, she was also taught to not let others know when she was having a period. And that perspective was not imparted to her only, but also to all women in Terra.
"But I have seen it, have I not?" Canillas responded with a small smile that Joanna still could not see, as she remained unchanged from her position since she left Canillas’ room. "And I am fine with that. So you don’t need to be shy and panic if I happen to see it again next time."
Because that next time would not fade away this time.
Because this time he would not let that next time disappear into nothingness.
