Chapter 55: Chapter 54 - The Infiltration Begins
"Let’s go," Caliste suddenly said as he pulled away from the kiss.
He had no idea that his sister had been following them. He also had no idea that she had seen him kissing Fleur. If he had known, he probably wouldn’t have, since he knew that his sister was quite possessive when it came to him.
She never wanted to let him go on his own. She was always trying to make sure that he was as safe as possible, and ever since that girl had insulted her little brother back on his 18th birthday, Aleia had been furious with Fleur, even going as far as to hate her because of what she had said.
Caliste revealed himself from behind the tree as he took a good look at the camp before him.
It was of decent size, and from a quick glance, he expected there to be at least 100 heretics living inside it. There were many tents all around, with one of them being much bigger than the rest.
’That must be where the one in charge is,’ Caliste thought immediately.
There was also something quite unique about the camp. The ground all around it was not green; it was practically black because of the corruption, and the center of the corruption seemed to be located under the biggest tent.
That was something that Caliste had noticed as they approached their encampment.
The closer they got, the darker the ground became, and the three were also not as healthy as before.
All around the camp, there were some ramparts with guards on top of them watching for any intruders.
For a small group of heretics, Caliste found them extremely well organized, which was quite surprising. After all, they didn’t have a lot of resources, so for them to have built something like this in such a short time was impressive in his eyes.
Caliste quickly moved through the shadows and the nearby trees to get closer to the camp’s entrance.
However, Caliste wasn’t stupid. He wouldn’t be walking in like a madman.
He decided to enter from the back, where there were far fewer guards. It would be much easier to infiltrate the place that way.
He had thought of another method, but he was unsure if it would work.
Still, he kept this second method in the back of his mind as it could always be handy if they were ever caught by the enemies.
This method was to reveal his identity.
If he revealed that he was a direct descendant of the Demon King, it might make them think twice before attacking him. At least, that’s what Caliste hoped by doing such a thing. He had seen how the person he had captured had reacted when he had used Demonic Authority, and he thought that maybe it would also work on those inside this camp.
But it was a gamble, which is why Caliste decided against using it for the moment.
A few seconds passed, and his back was against the rampart in the back. There were only two guards looking over that part, and both Caliste and Fleur had managed to slip through their field of vision.
They were currently right below those two men.
’We need to take them out silently.’
Caliste began climbing the rampart that was three times as tall as him. He did so in pure silence, demonstrating just how experienced he was when it came to infiltrating base camps. It impressed Fleur, who could only watch.
She did not have the skills to follow Caliste in whatever endeavor he was currently undertaking.
Caliste arrived closer to the top of the wall, where he could possibly enter the guards’ field of view.
Luckily, because of the large black tunics they wore, it was quite hard to distinguish who was who.
That was why Caliste and Fleur had decided to put on the tunics from the two people they had captured.
It made it much easier to infiltrate.
Caliste looked toward Fleur, trying to send her a message with his hand signs. But she didn’t seem to grasp it, as she frowned and shrugged.
’Whatever, let’s hope she reacts fast enough.’
Caliste pulled against the first guard’s leg, forcing him down.
As he fell, Caliste created a mana bubble to keep the sounds within it. Then, as he hit the ground, Fleur immediately realized what Caliste had been trying to say as she jumped on him without wasting a moment.
Then, she placed her hand against his mouth, ensuring that he could not say anything else.
However, when it came down to the final moment, Fleur hesitated.
She had never killed anyone in her life.
She couldn’t do it as easily as Caliste, who had done it countless times in his past life. He could even do it with his eyes closed, but that wasn’t the case for Fleur, who was extremely nervous about this whole thing.
She watched as the man struggled against her. She knew that if she wanted, she could kill him with a flick of her finger... but even then, she wasn’t sure what to do.
So, instead of killing him, she delivered a strong hit to his head, making the man lose consciousness at once.
While that happened, Caliste had taken the place of the other guard. He was acting like he had been there from the beginning, since with the hood, it was impossible to recognize others.
The fact that none of the heretics spoke to each other also made it easier to infiltrate.
The only thing he needed to do now was knock out the other guard up there.
Caliste moved swiftly, knowing that he could be watched from elsewhere.
He moved like a ghost as he took down the other guard before throwing him off the ramparts.
Luckily, it seemed that no one had spotted him. After doing that, Fleur managed to climb the rampart with little noise as Caliste did his best to help her discreetly.
