Chapter 41: Chapter 40 - Rumors

A few awkward minutes later, they arrived in the Elven Kingdom.

After the bombshell the elf guiding them had just dropped, both Fleur and Caliste stayed completely silent. All those rumors were true... even if Fleur’s family didn’t want them to be.

"Your father is waiting for you inside. He will be the one in charge of the quest you have accepted."

Caliste, who was a few meters behind them, frowned. "What about the King?"

The elf immediately frowned at Caliste, clearly showing who he preferred and valued.

Every single time that Caliste had opened his mouth, he had received this annoyed gaze. However, out of respect, Caliste had kept quiet. He didn’t want to cause too much trouble for everyone present.

"The King is busy for the time being. He had to leave on an emergency."

"Is everything alright?" Fleur asked with worry.

"Yes. It is nothing to worry about."

Caliste shook his head.

He had wanted to see how Luther had changed over the past hundred years. But it seemed that it would have to wait even longer. He would have to compensate with Fleur’s father, who was bound to be very "happy" to see Caliste again, especially after what had happened back in Ciel!

’Still, that bastard sure likes to show off, doesn’t he?’ Caliste thought in the back of his mind.

In the middle of the plaza, where dozens of elves walked every day, there was a gigantic golden statue of Luther from his younger days, holding a sword and showing off his strength.

’That traitorous bastard. Just you wait until I get my hands on you...’

Caliste couldn’t wait to punish all those bastards. It just so happened that Luther had been the one to enter his sights first. It was truly a pity that he wouldn’t be around for his first visit. However, while it was a pity, it was also a good opportunity.

Without Luther around, getting closer to his wife and daughter would definitely be a lot easier, and Caliste wasn’t one to let such an opportunity go.

Nevertheless, he pushed those thoughts aside for another time as they walked toward the doors of the biggest building in the entirety of the Elven Kingdom: The Elven Castle.

The doors were at least five times Caliste’s size, and there were three guards in front of them, ensuring their protection.

One thing was for sure: No one would be getting in without notice.

There were guards literally everywhere!

Still, it was time to analyze such things.

"Open the doors! The princess has arrived!"

The door slowly opened as one of the guards pulled a tall lever, activating a mechanism that opened the heavy door.

Once it was fully open, Caliste walked in.

On both sides of the alley stood dozens of elven nobles, standing up like straight arrows, observing their every movement. Some had gazes of admiration on their faces, while others looked neutral. However, no one seemed spiteful despite the ongoing rumors spreading around the kingdom.

At the end of the alley stood Alder, Fleur’s father, who had a bright smile on his face for a short moment before his eyes landed on the person who had entered beside her.

’What is that bastard doing here?!’ Alder shook his head. ’Don’t tell me that they got close to each other inside the academy...?’

Alder remembered clearly the spiteful youth walking with a sly smirk next to his beautiful daughter. He was someone who had ruined his daughter’s 18th birthday and insulted even their ancestors.

’I sure hope those rumors aren’t true...’

Alder had no idea what he was doing here, but he hoped that his daughter had a very good explanation.

"Fleur Champlin gives her respect to her father."

As they reached the end of the alley, Fleur gave a slight bow.

As for Caliste, he just stood next to her with his arms crossed, not saying a word.

Fleur blushed slightly at this behavior, knowing that it wouldn’t go unnoticed. She even tried to glance at him, hoping to convey that he should behave like her. However, she knew how Caliste was. There was no way in hell that he would show respect to those people, even if they were nobles.

Hell, even if the actual Elven King stood before him, Caliste would have never bowed.

Fleur knew that very well, but this behavior also didn’t help things. Let’s put it that way.

"You must bow in front of the temporary king," one of the guards suddenly shouted.

Caliste grinned arrogantly. "And what if I don’t?"

The guard who had spoken gritted his teeth as all of the nobles on the sidelines did the same. There was only one person who remained neutral: Alder.

He had already expected such behavior from the cocky son of the Demon King.

"It’s fine. No need to make a ruckus over such things," Alder announced, calming the atmosphere. "However, there is one thing I’m confused about."

"What is it?" Caliste answered, still smiling.

"Why are you in the Elven Kingdom, and why are you accompanying my daughter?"

"Well, that’s because I took on a quest with her. What else would there be?"

Caliste didn’t speak of their relationship just yet. He knew that this was as good a moment as any; however, he wanted to wait just a little longer. The conversation still hadn’t reached its peak yet. There was more to come.

"There is a rumor that has been spreading around the kingdom that you have entered a relationship with the princess. Is that true?" A voice from Caliste’s left side suddenly spoke up.

Caliste was surprised as he turned toward the person who uttered those words and observed him for a good minute.

"Mhm, and you are?"

"I’m Rex Darival, a noble who is worried about the princess and her surroundings. Please answer my question."

Caliste raised his eyebrows as he turned toward Alder. "Do I really have to answer this nobody?"

"N-Nobody! Who the hell do you think you are?!"

"Silence," Alder coldly called out, shutting everyone up. "I will be the one asking the questions. Please tell us about your relationship with the princess."

Caliste smirked at those words as he snuggled closer to Fleur, who looked the most stressed out of everyone present. That anxiety shot through the roof as she felt Caliste’s hand wrap around her waist, bringing her even closer to him...
