Chapter 36: Chapter 35 - Humiliation

Caliste was still in shock over the events that had just transpired.

The first thing he hadn’t expected was what happened last night with Fleur. He had wanted to take things slow over time, but the new skill he obtained had suddenly made it a lot easier for him to do as he wished.

However, that was still within the limits of reason.

The name he had heard when he opened the door to his dorm was not something he could have even anticipated.

A race that had been completely eradicated years ago by the Demon King himself.

The reason for that was that Barbarians were not like the others. Given enough time, they could become an actual threat to the Demon King.

Their physical prowess was unrivaled by any races that ever existed. The only reason they lost so badly was that Barbarians could not use mana or magic, which is a secondary effect of being overwhelmingly strong.

Actually, there was another reason.

They were plainly stupid. Extremely fucking stupid.

They let all their actions be dictated by their emotions. They never think; they act before they do so, and that’s how they met their demise.

But if a Siglius was still alive, it meant that there was a survivor that day—two survivors... maybe even more.

It was not like the Demon King to make such mistakes, and by now, he surely heard of their presence in the world. He was working inside the Demonic Academy... he was bound to be known, especially since he was not hiding his name from anyone.

Caliste took a deep breath as he lay back in his chair. He closed his eyes and breathed out.

’Just what the hell did you all do after my death...’

All kinds of thoughts filled his mind, and as always, there were no clear answers for him.

He needed to find Diana above everything else. She was the only one who could give him answers about history. She was the only one who hadn’t betrayed him.

’If only she had told me back then...’ Caliste clenched his fists just thinking of it. ’Why didn’t she tell me about it? I could have lived! We could have worked together and...’

He shook his head.

He was tired of having those thoughts. It was always the same thing, over and over again.

Diana wasn’t stupid. Caliste knew that. He also knew that there had to be some specific reason why she wouldn’t let him know before his death.

There just had to be something.

’Did she anticipate that I would reincarnate?’

However, that made no sense. She had searched for years for a way to bring him back to life. So, if she knew that Caliste would return, she wouldn’t have wasted all this time. And that’s why Caliste was lost—because he had literally no idea why she had made those decisions.

"Young man over there! Are you even listening?"

Caliste kept his eyes shut as he felt someone tap on his shoulders repeatedly.

He squinted his eyes open, wondering why Fleur would be tapping on his shoulder out of nowhere. However, when he looked before him, he realized that the professor seemed to be talking to him.

"Sleeping in my class, are you?" The professor shook his head. "It’s not because you are the son of the Demon King that you can do whatever you want. Come on stage; I’ll make a demonstration of a key concept when it comes to close-range fighting."

Caliste frowned as he tried to open his mouth to say that he wasn’t sleeping. But it was already far too late as everyone’s eyes landed on him.

He slowly stood up with a sigh as he could see in the glint of the professor’s eyes that his goal was extremely simple. The professor’s plan was very straightforward; he wanted to make an example out of Caliste. He wanted to show everyone in his class that he could not be disrespected.

However, what the professor didn’t know was that Caliste was not in the mood right now.

Caliste reached the stage as he felt the stares of everyone in the crowd land on him.

"Please place yourself in a combat position," the professor asked.

But Caliste did not move; he just looked into the professor’s eyes.

The professor gritted his teeth, already getting more and more frustrated.

"Do what I tell you."

Caliste shook his head and sighed once more. "This is my fighting position. What about it?"

’This arrogant student! I’ll show you what happens when you mock me openly! Son of the Demon King or not! I don’t care!’

"Is that so?"

The professor began walking toward Caliste with a smile on his face, cane in hand. He smirked as he walked behind him. Caliste wasn’t even looking for him; he kept looking straight in front of him.

The professor swung back his cane, preparing a strike against the back of Caliste’s knees.

Before launching it, he smiled and said, "You need to keep your center of gravity lower when you are in a fighting position."

-Swooosh!

Right after saying that, the professor swung with full force toward the back of his knees.

However, with a blink, Caliste was no longer before him.

The professor frowned, wondering where he had disappeared.

"You see... that’s true. But I only get serious when I’m against stronger opponents..." He whispered from behind the professor. "Now, let me get back to my seat, or I will thoroughly humiliate you in front of every single student attending this class."

The professor felt beads of sweat forming on his forehead. He hadn’t even been able to see him move.

’J-Just who is this... I-Is this what it means to be the son of the Demon King?’

He could feel his breathing getting ragged, but more importantly, he felt like he would be injured badly if he didn’t do as Caliste wished.

"Y-You can go back to your seat. I-I will select another student for the demonstration..." The professor muttered as Caliste had already begun leaving the stage.
