Chapter 30: Chapter 29 - Brutal Refusal

While the professors began throwing offers at Caliste, he looked almost distracted, his gaze unfocused as he kept looking into the distance, as if not interested whatsoever in what was being said.

But then, all of a sudden, he turned around, and his gaze met another. A gaze that had been observing him for quite some time backstage.

’Who is that?’ he frowned. ’Why did her gaze feel threatening?’

Caliste had no idea who that person was. However, he knew that whoever it was, she or he was very dangerous.

He hadn’t been able to get a good look at the person, but he had noticed that the eyes had definitely been red.

Everyone was surprised by the turnaround as they wondered what was going through Caliste’s mind. Most thought that he was crazy.

’He noticed that small amount of mana?!’ Rachel thought, her eyes widened.

She couldn’t believe that this first-year had noticed the small strand of mana that had been heading in his direction. She had barely used any. She had only wanted to see just how good his awareness was. However, she was mind-blown as a result.

He was on another level for his age.

Rachel quickly hid, as she did not want to be spotted by Caliste any further.

Still, she was satisfied with what she had seen.

’His Mana Purity is even higher than mine. Just where did this monster come from?’ she thought with a small frown.

She had never met anyone who could control mana better than her.

’Is he...’ she suddenly had a thought. However, she quickly shook her head just by thinking about it. ’Heh. That’s impossible. What am I even thinking...’

Rachel then left backstage, as she had seen enough from this new first-year. There was a good chance that he would be entering the Legendary Seats in his first year, completely shocking the current ecosystem.

While Rachel began thinking about how powerful Caliste was, the professors continued to make offers crazier than the other.

"If you choose me, I will give you as many mana crystals as you wish. I will support you with as much money as possible. I’m also very knowledgeable about close-range combat. I could help you!"

"No, choose me! I’ll give you dragon blood to strengthen your body. I’ll also give you an unlimited amount of mana crystals, and I’ll buy any tutors you need."

The reason why the professors were trying so hard to get his attention was because of the prestige of having him as their student later.

The fame they could obtain by telling others that this student had become powerful because of their help was very useful in terms of connections, and developing a good relationship with a student was also something that everyone wished for.

Nurturing a talent was also a dream of many, as they were bound to learn things from geniuses.

However, as Caliste heard all of their offers, his gaze landed on one person: Beerus, which made him smirk outwardly.

’That’s right. You know that I’m your only choice.’

He was the only professor who had not yet spoken up. But even then, Caliste was drawn to him. However, the next words coming out of Caliste’s mouth shocked him even further.

"What’s your offer? You’re the only one who didn’t speak up. Am I not talented enough?"

Beerus could only grit his teeth.

He could clearly see what was going through this young boy’s mind.

He was trying to humiliate him. In front of everyone present, he was trying to get something out of him. However, Beerus wasn’t one to be bullied in front of everyone.

Instead, he stayed silent and just smiled, as if daring the young demon on the stage to choose someone else.

However, that was Beerus’s first error, as he did not understand Caliste’s behavior.

A smirk appeared on his face as he couldn’t wait any longer to completely humiliate this arrogant demon who thought of himself as more important than he really was.

"I’ll stop you all right

there," Caliste suddenly said, his gaze landing on each professor one by one.

"It does not matter what you offer me. My choice will remain the same."

Beerus began smiling before the end of his sentence. He was almost sure of the words coming next. He knew that only he was an option for the young demon.

’Good choice, Caliste. I will make sure to support you properly. You won’t regret it,’ he thought in the back of his mind as Caliste’s gaze landed on him.

Almost everyone in the room seemed convinced that his choice had already been made. But then...

"I won’t accept any of your offers. That will remain the same for as long as I am studying at the Demonic Academy. I do not believe that you can offer me anything worth being my master. I can become stronger alone, just like I have always done until now."

Caliste had decided to go against the system. He did not want to go against his beliefs and his goals. He hated demons with a passion. If he followed the system’s quest without questioning it, then it just meant that he was the system’s toy, which was the last thing he wanted to happen.

[You have failed to complete the Demon System’s Quest.]

[There is no penalty for the failure of this mission. Instead, you have completed a secret quest.]

[Secret Quest Completed - Refuse the System’s Quest]

[Rewards: +1 System Level Up.]

Caliste smirked at the system’s secret quest. It seemed that no matter what he would have done, he would have his system leveled up.

[If you had chosen to complete the first quest from the system, you would not have refused a reward and instead gotten a penalty. It was a trick to test your loyalty to the heavens.]

Caliste smirked.

A test of loyalty.

It almost made him burst out laughing. He couldn’t care less about the heavens. He just despised 99% of demons, and never in hell would he ever side with them.

Still, as he refused, everyone in the room had their jaws dropped, as Caliste’s refusal was even worse than Fleur’s. He said that no matter what happened, he would never become the disciple of any professor.

The disrespect was too much to handle for most, especially Beerus, who was currently gritting his teeth, insulting Caliste from within.

’You dared refuse my discipleship. Prepare yourself to live like hell inside these walls.’
