Chapter 224: Chapter 224 What Did You Say I Came For?
The air seemed to momentarily fall silent.
Scarlett Jennings and Samuel Chalmers both turned their heads simultaneously and saw Donovan Jennings standing at the entrance of the study, with the butler beside him looking both excited and vexed.
Excited because his young master had finally come to his senses.
Vexed because he hadn’t stopped him, ruining the young master and Miss Jennings’ private moment!
Donovan just stood there, his eyes, as enchanting as peach blossoms, fixed intently on their clasped hands.
Facing Donovan’s deep gaze, Samuel remained unfazed and even asked in return, "What are you here for?"
There wasn’t the slightest guilt on his face, and he didn’t even let go of Scarlett’s hand.
Donovan almost laughed from anger.
You’re holding my sister’s hand and asking me what I’m doing here?
What do you think I’m doing here?!
If Lucas hadn’t texted him, he wouldn’t have known that Samuel and his sister had come to this point.
This was the sister he had just found and brought home, whom he hadn’t even looked at much, and now this Demon King was about to whisk her away!
Looking at Scarlett again, she didn’t appear the least bit embarrassed about getting caught. Instead, she seemed about to get up, but her face scrunched up a little as she began to speak,
"My leg’s a bit numb, can you give me a pull?"
Samuel acted as though he was going to switch from holding her hand to pulling her up when Donovan truly couldn’t hold back anymore.
He marched forward in a few big steps, grabbed his sister’s hand, and gently pulled her up.
When he caught Scarlett’s gaze, he didn’t show the warning and danger he reserved for Samuel, only undisguised concern.
"What’s with this? Lucas said you weren’t feeling well? Why didn’t you call a doctor?"
"I’m fine now," Scarlett replied, shaking her hand towards Samuel. "Thanks to Samuel’s help."
Donovan pursed his lips, thinking what kind of help Samuel could offer that he, as a brother, could not.
Scarlett didn’t elaborate further, shaking her hand again, and tucked away the Jade Token she was holding. She noticed there were faint cracks on it, her brows showing a hint of gravity.
The butler saw this and immediately stepped forward to help pick up the jade pieces on the ground for her.
When Donovan saw the items laid out on the floor, he sensed that today’s events might not be as simple as they appeared. But since Scarlett didn’t explain, he didn’t press her.
"Let’s go home, you don’t look well and need to rest," Donovan said, pulling her along without waiting for an answer and gave Samuel a glare as they left.
Samuel: ...
Scarlett didn’t think she looked as bad as Donovan said she did. But since the trouble was temporarily resolved, she didn’t want to keep occupying their study. She exchanged a few words with Samuel and let Donovan lead her out of the room.
At the top of the stairs, Donovan suddenly released her hand and knelt down in front of her.
"Scarlett, hop on, and I’ll carry you downstairs."
Scarlett: ...
She felt this was really unnecessary; she wasn’t that weak, and besides...
"We could just take the elevator," she said, pointing at the villa elevator on the other side.
Donovan remained in his squat, feeling deflated again.
She even knows where the Chalmers’ elevator is; how many times has she been here?
He pondered this, but suddenly he felt a weight on his back.
When Scarlett leaned onto his back, she experienced an emotion she couldn’t quite define, even as she said she didn’t need it.
But watching Donovan crouch like this for her, she was reminded of how she used to watch Josiah Garrison carrying Isolde Garrison when she was a child.
That was a treatment she never had.
Because that was Josiah, not her brother.
But now, this was her own brother, her real one.
In an inexplicable, impulsive decision, she climbed on.
Donovan was initially surprised, but then a bright smile spread across his handsome face. Without a moment’s hesitation, he hoisted her up and confidently marched down the stairs.
Samuel stood at the doorway of the study, witnessing the scene.
Something dawned on him as he watched.
He had seen her calm and composed demeanor while spell-casting so often that he almost forgot she was only eighteen this year.
Still a girl who knew how to act spoiled with her family.
This was good.
...
Meanwhile, Lucas Jennings had been waiting downstairs since Donovan went up, and when he saw Donovan carrying Scarlett, his expression changed dramatically. He rushed over, full of worry.
"This, this... hadn’t you said it was nothing? Why can’t she even walk now? I told you to get a doctor at home, but you insisted on not listening!"
What if her condition was delayed?
Donovan: ...
If his two hands weren’t still busy carrying Scarlett, he definitely would have given this kid a good knock on the head. Look at what he’s saying.
Still, seeing that Lucas was genuinely worried, he let it slide.
"Enough, she’s fine, we’re going home."
Donovan lifted his legs and led the way, as Lucas noticed a rare carefree expression on Scarlett’s face while on Donovan’s back. Only then did he realize this was one of Brother Donovan’s games.
He kept muttering all the way, following them back to the Jennings Family home.
Listening to it all, Scarlett knew that after they left, Derek Gibney and Mrs. Gibney specifically sought her sister out, confirming there was no ill intent. However, the old man who sold her the clamshell was nowhere to be found.
Mrs. Gibney scolded her daughter fiercely again, forbidding her from bringing home items of unknown origin in the future.
That evening, Scarlett also received a message from Caius Carew, saying they hadn’t tracked down the person who sold the clamshell rabbit. The trail was likely cold. At the same time, he reminded her:
"Since they’ve targeted you, they may act again after this. Should I have someone from the team keep an eye out?"
Caius was referring to watching over the Jennings Family home.
After all, the person behind the scenes clearly already knew Scarlett’s identity. With her planning to attend the Taoism Academy and not frequently at home, they could target her family instead.
Listening to Caius’s suggestion, Scarlett thought it over and said, "No need, I have other plans."
The next day, she once again found Samuel and told him her plan.
"You want to keep that mischievous spirit at home?"
Scarlett nodded, not withholding the story of the person behind the Resentful Bone and explained briefly,
"I won’t be home often soon, so if the spirit stays, we won’t need to worry about this area. Although its cultivation level isn’t particularly high, it is more formidable than an average house guardian, capable of handling ordinary malevolent beings."
She paused and continued, "It’s just that it always aims for you. I can bind it with a contract, but it might still... occasionally bother you."
Like her little fox and the baby spirit at home.
They really took every chance to cling to Samuel.
Scarlett felt a bit embarrassed.
Thinking of it this way, since she moved in, she had certainly given the master plenty of trouble. She even leached off his Spiritual Energy.
Perhaps seeing through her embarrassment, Samuel, after a moment of silence, only asked,
"He came for me in the first place. Would it not be against his will to make him contract with you?"
Scarlett thought, what right did he have to disagree? He should be grateful for the chance to stay near the master.
"If he’s unwilling, I’ll send him back to the mountains. If he won’t live in my home, does he expect me to let him move into yours?"
Scarlett said casually, but then heard Samuel clear his throat with a faintly deeper tone,
"That could be arranged."
Scarlett: ...
Master, have you really thought about what you’ve just agreed to???
