Chapter 43: Yoon Seoyul is still as mysterious as ever
"Yoon Seoyul?"
"Yoon Seoyul!!"
Cheon Areum rushed to Yoon Seoyul’s side, pulling the arm that was gripping the man’s neck. The man remained completely unresponsive, even after being released from Cheon Areum’s manipulation.
"What are you doing? Are you planning to kill him?"
The man’s body slumped to the ground at their feet. Cheon Areum stepped in front of Yoon Seoyul, stunned. He stared at Yoon Seoyul, who appeared utterly unfazed. The main character, the protagonist, the male lead of this book—he was supposed to be a kind-hearted person who wouldn’t even dare hit a stranger! He couldn’t just go around killing people. Doubting his own perception of Yoon Seoyul, Cheon Areum studied his expression... Why did he look like he was on the verge of crying?
Thunderstruck, he rubbed his eyes and looked again. Yoon Seoyul wore the same nonchalant expression, but if you looked closely into his eyes, there was a strange hint of sadness.
"...What’s wrong?"
"Let me sleep here tonight."
"Hm? Sure. Are you going to come back later tonight?"
Yoon Seoyul nodded slightly, his gaze drifting to the nearly unconscious man on the floor. Without another word, he grabbed the body and dragged it out of the building.
What was that?
Cheon Areum held his head and turned to the wall, now gaping with a hole. Hoping his landlord wouldn’t see this, he checked for any hidden security cameras. Only after confirming there were none did he return to the apartment, drained. Suddenly, the quiet, empty building he had liked so much didn’t feel so comforting. Shouldn’t there be some kind of security? Anyone could come and go as they pleased.
Maybe I should’ve just taken the house when it was being offered...
Regretting his past choices, he sat on the tight fitted couch beside Rian, who was ordering food on his phone.
"Hyung."
"Hmm?"
"Tell Yoon Seoyul to come and sleep here. I don’t want him taking you to his house at night."
Rian pouted and spoke with a bit of irritation, tapping the screen with purpose.
"I’ll do that... But Rian, what do you think about moving into his house instead?"
The tapping paused. Rian looked up at him, puzzled. Cheon Areum returned the gaze.
"...?"
"Nothing. I don’t mind, as long as I’m staying with you."
"Aww..."
Cheon Areum ruffled Rian’s hair, and Rian nodded proudly. But Rian’s approval wasn’t enough—he still needed the consent of the person who actually owned the house. Of course, he could grind S-Class gates and save up for a house himself... but houses in Seoul were insanely expensive. Yoon Seoyul’s neighborhood had top-tier security measures—special detection cameras, awakened guards. Mostly high-class awakeners lived in the area, and ordinary civilians weren’t allowed to enter freely.
It was too good an opportunity.
He’d have to shamelessly bring up the topic again...
That’s when a high-stakes but effective way to clear gates dawned on him. If he could pull it off, he’d be rich in no time.
*
After dinner, exactly at their usual bedtime, the doorbell rang. Cheon Areum opened it. He gave Yoon Seoyul a quick glance before his eyes moved to the white shopper bag in his hand. Yoon Seoyul immediately wrapped his arms around him, burying his face in his neck.
"...."
"I’m tired... I had to clear three S-Class gates today..."
"What is this? Ice cream?"
Ignoring the lips pressing against his neck, Cheon Areum focused on the cold shopper bag.
"If you’re tired, go sleep on the couch."
Rian glared at him and kicked his shoes off, annoyed he hadn’t changed yet. Yoon Seoyul nodded and slipped into house slippers while still clinging to Cheon Areum, who was busy trying to pull an ice cream bar out of the bag.
"Did you skip dinner?"
Rian crouched down near the entrance. Yoon Seoyul joined him on the floor and unintentionally pulled Cheon Areum down with him, who was already biting into the vanilla bar—despite brushing his teeth earlier.
"I bought ramen. What about you and your brother?"
"Hyung and I already had dinner... but I want ramen too."
"There’s enough for everyone. Do you want some too?"
Both Yoon Seoyul and Rian turned to Cheon Areum, who was still rapaciously sucking on the ice cream bar.
"...?"
"Do you guys want ice cream?"
Both of them sighed in unison.
Cheon Areum didn’t know why they were huddled on the floor like they were having a top-secret meeting, so he got up with the bag of ice cream.
Yoon Seoyul insisted on making him a cup of ramen too, though Cheon Areum shook his head and refused—too busy unpacking the ice cream. He ended up eating most of Yoon Seoyul’s ramen anyway. Rian graciously offered his half-eaten ramen to Yoon Seoyul but refused to let him sleep in the bed with them. So Cheon Areum gave him his pillow and Rian’s baby blanket that barely covered half a grown man’s body.
Yoon Seoyul slept on the couch with that, but on one condition—the bedroom door had to remain open.
*
The sun had just peeked over the horizon when Cheon Areum was awakened by a rustling behind him. Thinking it was Yoon Seoyul sneaking into bed, he opened his eyes—only to find Yoon Seoyul’s sleeping face right beside his hand. He was slumped on the floor, his head and arms resting on the narrow space Cheon Areum had left on the bed. Their fingers were fully interlaced.
Cheon Areum blinked repeatedly, trying to confirm he wasn’t still dreaming.
His breath caught when he felt a small movement beside him. Rian, thinking his older brother was still asleep, shifted carefully and climbed over him with the delicate movements of someone trying not to wake the other. Cheon Areum lay still, watching through half-lidded eyes as Rian gently settled beside him.
Without a word, Rian placed both his small hands on top of their clasped ones. He tucked his head in close, using their joined hands as a pillow, and quietly drifted back to sleep.
