Chapter 32: Heat

An unnatural heat burned him from the inside out—not like fever, but like a cursed inferno trying to consume his soul. His control wavered, dark energy crackling violently from his fingertips. The undead paused mid-motion, sensing the imbalance. Cheon Areum gritted his teeth, trying to stabilize himself—but the world around him tilted, spinning like a vortex.

No... it can’t be...

"Omega pheromones?"

Seungkwan muttered, covering his nose with his hand.

"Such dense pheromones... You’re in heat?!"

Minjun immediately blocked his nose with his arm as he uttered in shock. With the sudden loss of control, the number of monsters surged, erupting from the ground at a terrifying pace. The tremors of Cheon Areum’s energy—flaring out of balance—sent shockwaves through the others standing near him. The disruption didn’t just rattle the earth; it fractured the very hold they had over the undead.

The traps—once firm, racing with their energy—faltered. The grass binding their feet wilted prematurely, and Minjun’s glowing rope flickered as if doused by invisible winds. The momentary waver was all it took.

The undead broke free.

With distorted cries and jerking movements, the creatures lunged forward, their numbers now overwhelming. The ones at the front—Cheon Areum, Seungkwan, and Minjun—were affected by the heat the most. Cheon Areum’s fists clenched as he tried to stop his pheromones from leaking, but it was beyond what he knew. He knew nothing about repressing pheromones—could he even stop them in heat?

"Will you keep it steady? I can’t focus!"

Eunhyuk shouted, holding Minjun’s rope with a death grip. The blue fire that burned the ones inside the graveyard moved to the front, trying to keep them from spilling out onto them. Kim Ryung’s shots also became more frontier-focused, but the numbers were too extraordinary. There was no way they alone could hold on. All of them were A-Class, trying to handle a horde of S-Class monsters.

It just had to be in a relatively difficult S-Class.

It was his fault for completely forgetting about his heat, but it wasn’t like he had been an omega his whole life. It was technically his first heat, and he had no way of knowing how or when it would come. The book didn’t mention Cheon Areum going into heat even once. It was as if he wasn’t even an omega—how could he have guessed it would be this unendurable? Maybe if he had read more books about omega main characters, he would know how it truly felt...

Cheon Areum forcibly opened and closed his eyes multiple times, slightly shaking his head as sweat dripped onto the road he was mindlessly staring at. He couldn’t concentrate at all. It would be chancy if he used his abilities without a clear mind—and without him, the others would soon run out of energy to even keep the monsters at bay.

But without the need to say anything, Yoon Seoyul walked past him, seemingly unaffected by the pheromones, to enter the graveyard himself.

"Kim Ryung, keep him safe. I’ll take care of the monsters."

"Master, there are too many—you won’t be able to—"

"Do you have a better idea? Control yourselves first."

Reluctantly nodding, Kim Ryung’s hands dropped. Yoon Seoyul, in the blink of an eye, crossed the entrance, massacring the masses with his bare hands like a vicious beast. Cheon Areum quickly turned to Hwan, who was already injecting himself with an alpha suppressant, and spoke in a shaky voice.

"Do you have any omega suppressants?"

"Of course not! This is my first time being asked for an omega suppressor by an omega!"

Hwan dramatically yelled, backing away and turning his head from him. Subsequently, the others also began to inject themselves with alpha suppressants—even Yeongsu, the farthest from Cheon Areum, was having a hard time fiddling with the suppressant.

"But... I also only have an alpha suppressant..."

Cheon Areum mumbled, gulping thirstily. His whole body was burning, sweating profusely. He felt like he had been left in the desert under the blazing sun without water for days in that moment.

"Why do you even have that?"

Kim Ryung obscured his mouth and nose with a hand as he grumbled. He had already taken an alpha suppressant, but it seemed to have no effect on him in the presence of an omega in heat. The others had already withdrawn from him—the nearest person was Kim Ryung, but they couldn’t go too far in case the monsters broke out. And the suppressants were almost useless.

What if they lose all remaining composure? If the suppressants didn’t work, what could keep him safe? Cheon Areum was suddenly overcome with worries for his safety. Could he really trust them? Could he go against seven alphas in such a state?

"This won’t work..."

Kim Ryung, troubled, scratched the back of his head, muttering to himself as he watched Yoon Seoyul in the middle of the crowd, fighting all by himself. Blood splattered from all directions as he was surrounded by the undead monsters—creatures even Cheon Areum had chosen not to engage hand-to-hand.

The only one he could trust...

"Yoon Seoyul."

Cheon Areum said dazedly, lifting his body. He took a step forward and ran straight to him—the only one he trusted his life with. He didn’t need any kind of proof. For someone like Yoon Seoyul, he would do anything to keep him safe.

"Cheon Areum!"

"Hey! Are you crazy?! Why are you running toward the monsters?"

Kim Ryung and Inho yelled behind him. Cheon Areum dashed through the entrance of the graveyard, carelessly throwing aside the monsters climbing and clawing to attack Yoon Seoyul. His energy flowed out, circling Yoon Seoyul as he pushed back every body near him, sprinting and jumping onto Yoon Seoyul—who, with wide eyes, instantly caught him in a tight hold.

Cheon Areum breathed roughly through his mouth, wrapping his arms around Yoon Seoyul’s neck and legs around his waist, holding onto him for dear life.

"What are you doing? You just can’t stop yourself from jumping straight into danger."

Yoon Seoyul clicked his tongue but didn’t let him go. Instead, he moved back to the corner of the graveyard, away from the monsters, who were starting to back up slowly. Cheon Areum knew they wouldn’t be able to fight back in this state, but he didn’t want to get off Yoon Seoyul. He stubbornly refused to move, hiding his head in the crook of his neck. His heart beat uncomfortably fast—he felt like he would lose consciousness once again.

Yoon Seoyul briskly retrieved a suppressant from his inventory, heedlessly injecting himself to calm down. But the others, who were so far away, were still experiencing the effects of his pheromones—there was no way one suppressant would do anything. Cheon Areum felt a hand, colder than his skin, slide across his nape, concealing it as Yoon Seoyul whispered in his ear in a heavy voice.

"Do you have another suppressant?"

"For alphas?..."

"Yeah."

Cheon Areum drew back his head a little and stared at him with wet eyes as he replied.

"Can I just inject myself with it? It should do something, at least... right?"

In a desperate voice, he asked, but Yoon Seoyul glared at him, shaking his head.

"No, it won’t do anything... Worse, it could have the opposite effect. So give it to me."

"No... injecting more than one is not recommended."

"Cheon Areum. Look at the situation we’re in... Give it to me."

Cheon Areum, with a shaky sigh, handed the suppressant to Yoon Seoyul, who—without wasting a second more—took off the cap with his mouth and injected it into his leg.

"Can you remove your hand from my nape...? It’s burning..."

Cheon Areum begged, wriggling to get the hand off. The heat under the cover burned the skin of his nape—the hand on top of it seemed to be burning the same. Why wasn’t he removing it?

"Behave... I don’t want to accidentally mark you."

Shutting his mouth, Cheon Areum endured it. His fingernails dug into the back of Yoon Seoyul’s shirt. Even after knowing everything, he couldn’t keep his body still. How would they clear the gate like this? He racked his brain, persistently holding onto his consciousness.

He could hear blasts from behind him. Cheon Areum looked at the road—as he had guessed, Kim Ryung was shooting at the monsters to keep them from reaching them. The others, looking haggard, also moved to help him, using any leftover energy.

Hwan was using his booster on Kim Ryung—that was the only reason he could handle the monsters alone. But as time passed, Kim Ryung’s complexion was inflammated and flushed. He was overheating, going past his limit. The others had already given up, tumbling onto the road in defeat, fanning themselves. Only Inho, Hwan, and Kim Ryung determinedly stood there to support them.

This isn’t it... This is not what I wanted to happen...

Cheon Areum tenaciously looked at them with a strange glint in his eyes—then bit down on Yoon Seoyul’s neck, drawing blood. But he didn’t stop. He pressed his teeth deeper until his mouth was full of metallic taste.
