The Extra's Rise
Chapter 621 - 621: Divine Beast (1)

'Are you not rushing this?' Luna's voice echoed in my mind as I stared out the window of our private jet, watching the Northern continent's snow-capped peaks grow larger beneath us.

I was currently en route to Luminarc, the capital city of Creighton family territory, with what amounted to Ouroboros's core leadership team. Well, almost the entire core. Reika sat across from me, reviewing operational reports with her characteristic focus, while Kali occupied the seat beside her, absently practicing minor spatial manipulations that made the air shimmer around her fingers.

Jin had remained in the Western continent to maintain our newly established operations—someone needed to ensure our processing networks continued functioning smoothly while monitoring for the inevitable political backlash. Elias and Carrie were holding down the fort in Avalon, managing guild operations and territorial responsibilities that couldn't be neglected during my absence.

'Luna's not wrong to question the pace,' I admitted silently, considering the rapid expansion we'd undertaken over the past few months. 'But sometimes rapid advancement is the only way to stay ahead of developing threats.'

'The West is not easy to conquer,' Luna reminded me, her mental voice carrying the weight of hard-won wisdom. 'You've disrupted established power structures and profit margins. They won't simply accept your success gracefully.'

She was absolutely right, and that reality was precisely why this journey to the Northern continent was necessary. The Western continent would strike back—not through legal channels or diplomatic protests, but through the kind of direct action that characterized a world where individual power could reshape entire regions.

'The attacks are coming,' I thought with grim certainty. 'And when they do, Ouroboros needs to be strong enough to survive them.'

The organizations that would move against us wouldn't be cartoonishly evil like the Five Cults had been. They would be legitimate businesses, established guilds, and regional powers whose interests we'd threatened through our success. They would justify their actions as necessary market corrections, defensive measures against unfair competition, or simple business disputes that required resolution through force.

'This world seems modern and civilized on the surface,' I reflected, watching clouds drift past our aircraft's windows, 'but underneath, it's still governed by the fundamental principle that might makes right.'

The class system that persisted across all continents was the clearest evidence of this reality. Why hadn't democratic revolutions abolished nobility and aristocracy? Because those nobles possessed the magical power to level cities if threatened. How could you overthrow a king who commanded nine-circle magic capable of reducing entire armies to ash?

'It's possible, certainly,' I acknowledged. 'But incredibly difficult when your opponents can personally eliminate thousands of people with the right spell.'

This principle extended to every aspect of society. Business disputes were ultimately resolved by whoever possessed superior force. International negotiations succeeded or failed based on the magical capabilities of the participants.

'In the end, everything comes down to strength,' I concluded. 'Political connections help, wealth provides resources, but raw magical power determines what's actually achievable.'

Ouroboros had grown rapidly, but our success remained dependent on factors beyond our direct control. Our Western continent operations relied on partnerships that could be severed through political pressure. Our technological advantages could be replicated given sufficient time and resources. Our market position could be undermined through coordinated action by established competitors.

'What we need is untouchable power,' I thought. 'Capabilities that can't be replicated, neutralized, or negotiated away.'

The Northern continent offered opportunities to develop exactly that kind of power. Access to the Ashen Territories would provide resources that no other organization could even attempt to harvest. A Divine Beast would grant me magical capabilities that transcended normal advancement paths. Kali's transformation into a Zombie Princess would give us access to necromantic abilities that complemented my own while establishing her as a force capable of independent action.

Regional powers might be able to pressure us in one location, but coordinating action across multiple continents required resources and political cooperation that few organizations possessed. Diversification would transform Ouroboros from a promising regional guild into a genuinely international force.

'Eventually, I will be the most powerful person in the world,' I thought with quiet determination. 'But that kind of advancement requires careful planning and measured progress.'

The key was balancing ambition with prudence, confidence with caution. Be ambitious but not greedy—pursue opportunities aggressively without overextending resources. Be relaxed but not lazy—maintain composure under pressure while remaining proactive about addressing challenges. Be alert but not anxious—anticipate threats without allowing paranoia to compromise decision-making. Be ready but don't kill yourself with preparations—maintain adequate defenses without sacrificing offensive capabilities.

'Step by step,' I reminded myself. 'Each advancement builds foundation for the next level of growth.'

"Arthur," Kali said, interrupting my contemplation, "we're beginning our descent toward Luminarc. You might want to see this."

I looked out the window and felt my breath catch at the sight below us. Luminarc spread across a vast mountain valley like a jewel set in snow and stone, its crystalline spires rising toward the sky with architectural beauty that seemed to defy conventional engineering.

'The Creighton family certainly knows how to make an impression,' I thought with genuine admiration. 'This is what civilization looks like when you have unlimited resources and centuries to perfect your craft.'

"It's beautiful," Reika said softly, her usual professional composure giving way to wonder as she studied the approaching city.

"It's ridiculously ostentatious," Kali corrected with characteristic bluntness, though I caught the note of appreciation in her voice. "But I suppose if you're going to be ostentatious, this is how you do it properly."

'That's very much like Kali,' I thought with amusement. 'Criticize something while simultaneously acknowledging its quality.'

Our aircraft touched down at what appeared to be a private airfield adjacent to the main city, the landing so smooth it was barely perceptible. Through the windows, I could see reception facilities that looked more like elegant pavilions than functional transportation infrastructure.

'Everything here is designed to impress,' I noted. 'The Creightons understand that appearances matter when you're dealing with continental-level politics.'

As we disembarked, the crisp mountain air filled my lungs with a freshness that was noticeably different from the Western continent's more arid climate.

'This feels like home in a way the Western continent never did,' I realized.

"Arthur!"

The familiar voice made me turn just in time to catch Rachel as she launched herself at me with characteristic enthusiasm. Her blonde hair caught the afternoon sunlight as she wrapped her arms around me in a hug that lifted her feet off the ground, her sapphire eyes bright with joy that made my chest tighten with affection.

'Two months,' I thought, returning her embrace and breathing in the familiar scent of jasmine that always accompanied her. 'It's been two months since I've seen her.'

"I missed you so much," Rachel said, her voice slightly muffled against my shoulder. "Your calls were wonderful, but they're not the same as actually being here."

"I missed you too," I replied honestly, reluctantly loosening my hold enough to look at her properly. "How have you been? How's your training progressing?"

"I did it," she said with obvious pride, her sapphire eyes sparkling with excitement. "I broke through to Ascendant-rank three weeks ago. Father says my advancement was remarkably smooth—faster and more stable than most practitioners achieve."

'Excellent,' I thought with genuine satisfaction.

"Rachel, that's incredible!" I said, my congratulations entirely sincere. "Breaking through to Ascendant-rank at your age is extraordinary, even for someone with your talent."

"Thank you," she beamed, then looked at me with curious eyes. "What about you? I could sense something different the moment you got close—your aura feels... deeper."

"Mid Ascendant-rank," I confirmed with a slight smile. "The Western continent operations provided plenty of opportunities for advancement. Combat experience has a way of accelerating development."

Rachel's eyes widened with admiration and something that looked like competitive excitement. "Mid Ascendant-rank already? Arthur, that's incredible progress!"

"Speaking of which," Rachel said, her expression shifting to curiosity as she noticed Reika and Kali approaching with our luggage, "Father is eager to meet with you about the aetherite research coordination. He's been practically vibrating with excitement since your message arrived."

'Uncle Alastor has been looking forward to this as much as I have,' I realized. 'The prospect of working with revolutionary magical materials would appeal to any researcher of his caliber.'
