Chapter 88: Chapter 88: Crimson Execution

CLANK!

Sparks erupted as Revenant Fang crashed against black, obsidian claws.

The sound echoed through the third floor, shaking dust from the rafters. Noel’s boots skidded across the warped wood, but he held firm. His arm trembled slightly from the impact, but his stance was solid.

Across from him, Lereus stood with one claw raised, casually deflecting the blow. His grin widened.

"Oh, like I said—you’re an interesting one. To break free from my blood control? Impressive. I knew it. You’re unique."

He took a step forward, eyes narrowing.

"And it was you, wasn’t it? The one who ruined everything."

Noel raised Revenant Fang again, smirking.

"You thought I’d let you keep sacrificing people like cattle? For what—some pathetic blood ritual? You’re insane."

He shifted his weight, blade ready.

"Tell your boss he’s gonna have to try harder next time. Hahaha."

The amusement vanished from Lereus’s face.

"I have no boss."

Noel’s smile sharpened.

"Oh? I think your chatty little crystal friend would say otherwise... Kaelith Drosen."

Lereus froze.

His fingers twitched.

"...You—how do you know that name?"

Noel winked. "Trade secret."

He tightened his grip on the hilt.

"Didn’t even remember who you were at first. But now it’s clear—the prodigy who wanted to be the Seventh Pillar. Kaelith, the butcher."

He took one slow breath.

"Well... enough talking."

’I’ve got ninety seconds. Maybe less. Let’s make them count.’

Noel moved first.

Revenant Fang cleaved downward in a fast, precise arc aimed at Lereus’s side. The blow met claw with a flash of sparks and the crack of splintering floorboards.

Lereus’s smirk faded just slightly at the force behind it.

Noel didn’t let up.

"FIRE ARC!"

Flames burst in a wide, burning crescent—high heat, wide angle—purposefully angled away from the students chained against the far wall.

’One misfire and they’re dead. No room for mistakes.’

Noel pivoted back, crouched low, and shouted:

"FROST WALL!"

A wall of thick, jagged ice erupted between them. He used the cover to reposition—away from the captives, closer to the room’s perimeter.

His breathing hitched.

Chest tight. Arms burning.

It wasn’t fatigue. It wasn’t mana overload.

It was something else.

Something wrong.

’Shit. My whole body’s burning from the inside.’

He reached into his cloak, pulled a small sigil crystal and slammed it to the floor.

"FLARE TRAP!"

Then another, behind a cracked beam.

On the other side of the ice, Lereus’s voice came clear and amused.

"Protecting them? How sweet."

The wall shattered in an instant—ice shards exploding across the floor as Lereus stormed through.

Noel planted his feet and raised his hand.

"IGNITION SURGE!"

A burst of fire detonated from his palm at close range, engulfing Lereus in smoke and light.

When the flames cleared, Lereus stood laughing, smoke curling off his chest.

"You’re in pain. I can see it. I can smell it."

Noel didn’t answer. Just gripped Revenant Fang tighter, jaw clenched, knuckles white.

’Keep smiling, bastard. You’re running out of time.’

Lereus moved faster now.

He blurred forward, claws sweeping toward Noel’s midsection.

Noel reacted by instinct alone.

He dropped low—barely dodging the first swipe—then spun and slashed upward with Revenant Fang. The blade carved the air, forcing Lereus to leap back.

"ICE SPIKE!"

A jagged spear of frozen mana erupted from the ground, catching Lereus across the shoulder. A thin line of blood trailed down his black robes.

The demon paused.

Touched the wound.

Then smiled wider.

"A student made me bleed," he muttered. "Interesting."

Noel was already moving.

"GLACIALIS!"

Dozens of frost shards exploded outward in a spiral, whistling through the air. Lereus twisted, dodging most, but two slashed across his ribs. His coat tore.

He didn’t even flinch.

"Blood Spikes."

Dark tendrils launched from Lereus’s arms, three sharp bolts of coagulated blood streaking toward Noel in a crisscross.

"FROST WALL!"

One of them shattered against the rising ice. The second grazed Noel’s leg. The third punched clean through the edge of his shoulder.

He grunted, forced himself into a roll.

Blood dripped down his side, hot and fast.

His vision swam for a second.

His hands were trembling.

His breath tasted like metal.

’Sixty seconds. Or less. My body’s breaking down... but I can’t stop now.’

Lereus tilted his head, watching him.

Still smiling.

Still entertained.

Noel wiped blood from his mouth and forced himself upright.

Lereus stalked forward slowly, eyes glowing, the claw on his right hand dripping red. The air between them buzzed with unstable mana. The floor crackled beneath their feet.

Noel’s body was screaming. His muscles spasmed. His lungs burned.

He had seconds.

No plan left.

Just instinct.

He raised his left hand toward the center of the room and shouted—

"DARK SUN!"

The air distorted.

A black orb of condensed heat and gravitational force erupted above Lereus—collapsing light into shadow, flames bending unnaturally inward.

The room imploded for half a second. The sound disappeared. Every loose object flew toward the orb—splinters, books, broken chains.

Lereus barely had time to raise a claw before the spell detonated.

BOOM!

A shockwave burst outward. Flames and ash blew through the third floor, shaking the entire building. The support beams cracked. Smoke and black fog swallowed everything.

Noel dropped to one knee, panting, his vision spinning.

’Too much... too fast. That took everything I had left.’

He tried to lift Revenant Fang, but his arms refused to obey.

He couldn’t even stand.

The burning inside his chest had become a raging fire.

Behind the veil of smoke, a shadow moved.

Noel blinked—once, twice—

And realized too late.

’Shit... almost two ranks above is quite unfair.’

Before he could react, a hand closed around his throat.

Cold and merciless. Unshakable.

Lereus stepped from the smoke without a scratch, his eyes glowing with molten calm.

He lifted Noel into the air like he weighed nothing.

Feet dangling.

Blade slipping from his grasp.

Revenant Fang fell and hit the floor.

"You were entertaining," Lereus murmured, voice low. "But playtime’s over."

Noel’s vision blurred —colors fading, sound distorting.

His fingers twitched, still reaching for something.

Anything.
