Ch. 19 - A Peaceful Day for Solon, Philia and Clarice

Seeing the light of the morning sun coming through the windows of the Imperial Palace, I fell back into bed. It was still early in the morning, so even if I slept again, I wouldn’t be disciplined. Besides, the bed, as expected of a high-quality bed in Imperial Palace’s room, felt really comfortable.
Previously, I have set up a magical barrier in this room. The barrier was linked to me, so I could easily tell if there was an attack. Therefore, I could sleep with more peace of mind. I yawned. Then I thought about my days as the vice-captain of The Knights of Saint Sophia.
Because I was very busy, I had to wake up early in the morning and work until late at night. After all, aside from fighting in the battle, I also did every behind-the-scenes work in the knight order. The work was never-ending. Well, the people around me became stronger afterwards so the opportunity to go to the underground ruins itself decreased over time. Instead, I was overwhelmed by the work of managing the knights, because the knight order became larger and all the aristocratic executives were inexperienced. I couldn’t entrust them with the knight order’s administration and management.
It could be said I was now freed from doing those menial tasks, because I had been exiled from The Knights. I didn’t know who would do it in my place, but I hoped they would do well.
Philia was sleeping on the bed next to me. I glanced at her side profile. She was sleeping comfortably as if she had nothing to worry about. With her childish face, I thought she was a kind and beautiful girl. She was wearing lovely sleepwear made of thin fabric that made her chest slightly exposed. I glanced at her chest, and looked away in a hurry. I definitely thought waking up in the same room with a girl would be a problem.
‘Whatever, I’m going to sleep again,’ I thought, before the door opened with full force.
"Philia-sama! And Solon-sama! Good morning!” The maid, Clarice, said with a singsong voice and went inside without waiting for a reply from either Philia or me. I jumped out of the bed and checked the time, it was still 6 a.m. I didn’t think it was time to wake up yet.
"It is not good for both of you to overslept. I don’t know if it’s because you’re embarrassed, but shouldn’t Solon-sama wake up Philia-sama?” Clarice said.
"Um, Clarice-san. Do you know what time it is?”
"Isn't it 7:30?"
Clarice and I looked at the clock. I thought Clarice’s clock was surely broken. Then her face became red with embarrassment.
"I’m sorry. It’s still 6 o'clock. It seemed like I woke the both of you up too early.”
"Don't worry about it, I was already half-awake."
Then I glanced at Philia on the bed next to me. She seemed to sleep soundly and didn't even make any movements. Clarice and I looked at each other and giggled. She then looked at Philia and gently stroked her face affectionately.
"She’s sleeping peacefully,” Clarice said.
I nodded, “Yes, she is.”
"You know, Philia-sama can’t be at ease when she sleeps alone. She is always quite anxious.”
"Why doesn't Clarice-san stay by her side?"
"I can't do that. I don’t have any power to help Philia-sama if she was attacked in any case.”
"Is that so?"
"And the maids have to sleep in assigned rooms, because we have to work early in the morning. Also, our status is different.”
"Status, huh."
In terms of status, I was a commoner. Although I was the imperial princess’s instructor and received aristocratic treatment, I, a man, sleeping in the same room with Phila, didn’t make sense at all.
"No matter how cute Philia-sama is, you still wouldn’t lay your hand on her?"
"I won't do that, Philia-sama is only fourteen years old. She is a lot younger than me."
"Then, if it’s me, who’s closer to your age, will you lay your hand on me?" Clarice said, making fun of me.
Clarice seemed to be seventeen. Even though she was definitely closer in age to me than Philia, she was still younger. But I thought she was rather cute. Then I felt like I was thinking something inappropriate.
"I couldn't do as I please after all, because Clarice-san doesn’t sleep together with me in this room,” I said carelessly.
"Then, I will sneak into Solon’s bed in the middle of the night.”
"I would rather you not do that."
When I said that, Clarice looked amused. Somehow, I felt like Clarice would really do it. Then she sat down on my bed, wrapped my hand with both of hers, and looked up at me.
"Then, is this fine?"
"I think it would be better to stop with these jokes,"
"Solon-sama, your face is bright red."
‘Whose fault do you think it was,’ I thought. But just as I was going to protest, I stopped, seeing Clarice giggling cheerfully. Well, it wasn’t a bad way to kill time going along with Clarice’s jokes in the early morning.
"If Philia-sama saw this, she would definitely get angry."
It wasn't something to be angry about, but I thought it might be possible that she would misunderstood the situation. Clarice and I looked at each other again, then glanced at Philia, who muttered “Solon” while she was still in her dreams.
Clarice said with a gentle expression, "Philia-sama can sleep peacefully because of Solon-sama."
If that was so, then it was good that I was staying here. Unlike when I was in the knight order, I felt like I was needed. Rather than the knight order, this was a much better place to stay.
