Chapter 156: 156

After gaining perfect connection with the sealing book, Michelle stared at it for a long while, her purple eyes deep and profound. Something within her subconsciousness had moved, and she felt like she suddenly knew how to seal things. So she could move on with her plan to permanently get rid of the extreme humidity in the basement. It was already starting to make her sick.

"You should rest before you do anything more!" Alexander warned, walking over to Michelle. Before she could react, she found the sealing book snatched away from her, making her frown. Alexander also leaned against her from behind and wrapped his arms around her waist and arms, rendering her helpless.

"I’m fine!" Michelle snapped. Out of the few things she hated, being restrained was among the top three.

"At this rate, you will overuse your soul energy again," Alexander’s voice was still playful and carefree, but his tight grip around Michelle proved otherwise.

"I don’t need my soul energy for the sealing process!" Michelle retorted as she pushed her elbow back, hitting Alexander hard in his chest.

Knowing how stubborn Michelle was, even though Alexander was more hard-headed than she was, he gave in to her for the first time. "If I see you use any soul energy, I’ll make sure you stay on the ground for a whole week!" he said with a cold smile, his gaze carrying a clear threat.

If anyone other than Michelle ended up under that gaze, they would shake in their boots, but Michelle was different. Not only was she a former assassin, but the reminder of all the times Alexander was able to oppress her and render her motionless with his aura fueled her desire to get stronger than him and beat him up. So she didn’t waver under that gaze.

In her mind, if she did waver in front of him, she would no longer be worthy of ever standing far above him. Thus she decided to make her stance clear from the start. "Don’t worry! I can take care of myself!"

With that, Michelle snatched back the sealing book and opened it. Because of the perfect connection, she didn’t have to think deeply about what to do. When she wanted to use the sealing book, the skills needed for it and related information simply surfaced in her mind.

And Michelle had finally decided whether to seal the shadow essence in the mud or the water underground. Because of the knowledge she gained from having perfect connection with the sealing book, she realized that the only sealing skill she could use at the moment, because of her insufficient power and inability to use spirit energy, was incapable of sealing the water because it was being blocked by something powerful—the shadow essence.

So the only way out Michelle had was to try to seal the shadow essence, but from the knowledge in the sealing book, she didn’t find out anything about shadow essence, so she had no idea if she would succeed.

Still, trying wouldn’t hurt, would it?

The sealing book had many skills, but the one Michelle wanted to use used neither soul nor spirit energy. It merely used the connection between the contract master and the book, and the power of the book. For that, a few conditions needed to be met.

The sealing book had to be in direct contact with the thing or creature to be sealed or at least a part of it.

At the same time, the contract master also had to be in contact with the thing or creature, or part of it.

And the last condition was that the contractor was able to open their body for the book’s power so they could act as a medium to seal the thing or creature.

Since Michelle had decided to seal the shadow essence in the mud, the direct contact wasn’t a difficult thing to do. She just opened the book at the first page and placed it face-down on the ground. Then, she herself squatted down next to the book, placed her hand on its cover and her other hand on the mud. Finally, she closed her eyes.

She wasn’t really sure about how to activate her skill, but to her surprise, once she thought about it, the solution appeared in her mind. And it was quite simple. She just needed to picture some ancient runes in her mind.

In an instant, the book shimmered a bit and the same runes Michelle imagined left it and crawled over Michelle’s hand, spreading all over her body, and to her other hand. From there, it penetrated into the mud and spread all over the basement floor.

For a while, the runes illuminated the whole room, remaining motionless and unchanging before starting to shrink back to Michelle. But at the same time, she felt like something was crawling over her body. It was an unpleasant feeling, making her frown, but she kept her eyes closed and let the runes do their work.

The crawling feeling was the shadow essence being squeezed out of the ground, over Michelle’s body, the medium, into the book, where it would then be sealed.

And after a while, the runes shrank back to Michelle’s hand and then started retreating to her other hand, the one on the book. When the runes were off her body, the disgusting crawling feeling also disappeared from her body.

With a nod, Michelle opened her eyes and picked up the sealing book, turning it over to look at the first page. And just as she had hoped and guessed, there was a black stain chained by a string of golden runes.

Smiling a bit, Michelle closed the book, and just like the runes on the black stain, the whole book was suddenly chained closed by such runes. After sealing something so out of reach in power compared to herself, Michelle knew that she wouldn’t be able to use the sealing book for a while. It was limited to her powers, and since she was still below the Spirit rank, sealing the shadow essence had basically drained the book’s powers.

"I should congratulate you!" Alexander clapped with a smirk as he stared at the chained-up book in Michelle’s hands.

As far as he knew, that was supposed to be in the heavenly realm, with the Black Lord. So why was it with Michelle? And in a contract with her? That could only mean two things. Either she was somehow connected to the black god, or she was being used by the white god who was well known for being in a feud with the black god.

Neither of the situations were good. Both the gods were known for being cruelly petty and could get rid of Michelle with a flick of their finger if they wished so. And even Alexander would have no way of protecting her then. He stood no chance against the two gods.

Well, they were actually far from gods, but since they were the most powerful known beings in the heavenly realm and no one knew their names, people started to call them as such. They were no one else than the creature always clad in black, Mavreth, and his longstanding enemy, Lavreth.

But only Michelle knew those two names. Because Mavreth revealed them to her when she had first come to the lower realm from the Land of Exile. She could still clearly remember how Mavreth said these two names: "I’m Mavreth, and that bastard is Lavreth. Remember it well, because that bastard hates being called by his name."

She wasn’t going to tell anyone about it. But if a situation arose, she could use the name Lavreth to piss off the white god. It was risky and gutsy to even think about it, but Michelle was still planning to do it. But only if a suitable situation arose. She wasn’t going to just place her head under Lavreth’s guillotine of wrath.

With the shadow essence placed into the mud by the Shadow Master sealed within her sealing book, Michelle turned her attention to getting rid of the humidity for the last time. At the moment, she couldn’t use her spirit energy, so her ice condensator was out of the question.

That left her with only one option left—to use the laws of physics she knew from her old world. From there, she remembered how some very humid caves quickly dried up after some events. Actually, very simple events.

For the humidity to disappear, one just needed to create strong enough winds to blow away the vapor in the air.

But that could prove to be problematic because the basement only had one opening, the staircase. There was no other opening to create wind.

Of course, Michelle could just create a hole on the other side of the basement, but the basement was huge, stretching under the city, so she had no chance of knowing where she would dig herself out. Also, because of the size of the basement, one opening would be far from enough, so she would need to dig in many places which could easily lead to the basement falling into itself, not only taking away the space she needed but also destroying a big part of the city. So Michelle had to act with caution.
