Chapter 148: 148

After remembering her death day, Michelle opened her eyes, finding herself still curled up on the ground at the campsite. Everyone was gone, with only Nyxaroth and Cold Flame remaining by her side. "How long was I asleep?" she asked before even moving an inch.

The moment the two heard Michelle’s voice, they were clearly surprised. "Something over two days..." Cold Flame finally said after a long while of silence.

Both he and Nyxaroth had expected Michelle to remain asleep for weeks, if not months, since she strained her soul energy to an extreme. But she suddenly woke up after a mere three days. That wasn’t just strange. It was shocking and unexplainable.

There was one more thing they couldn’t explain. While Michelle was asleep, Nyxaroth took on his mist form and seeped into her body to check on her once every two hours, but he didn’t see much improvement. Even after two and a half days, Michelle’s soul energy was nearly depleted, with the recovery being so slow that Nyxaroth reached the conclusion that a month would be way too short for Michelle to wake up.

"Two days..." Michelle was dumbfounded when she heard Cold Flame’s words. "Are you sure you didn’t mean to say two months?" she tilted her head in confusion.

"No!" Cold Flame shook his head. "You slept for two and a half days."

With a frown, Michelle stood up and stretched her body. It was stiff and sore from being curled up for so long, but Michelle didn’t mind it the least bit. "Where’s everyone else...?" she asked as she looked around.

To that, Nyxaroth answered: "As everyone thought you would sleep for a long time, they left. Originally, they wanted to go fighting more monsters and beasts, but then Snow sent a message that the monsters in this area are too strong and that they will be cultivating somewhere near the valley."

"I see..." Michelle nodded a bit. Then, she thought about the situation for a while before deciding: "Let’s go back to the tavern!" With that, she looked at Cold Flame and he took on his beast form, letting her get on his back.

At the same time, Nyxaroth turned into a wisp of black mist and hid into Michelle’s body. He did it to hide from the light since he was a darkness-based creature, and also decided to use the opportunity to check the state of Michelle’s soul energy once again. And just as before, it was nearly gone, regenerating very slowly. Basically unnoticeably.

Very quickly, Cold Flame flew Michelle near the city where the tavern was and Michelle then let him into the contract space. Then, just like when she had first come to the city, she used her Shadow Spirit Steps to come to the city gate and stopped right in front of the guards.

Once again, there were two guards, one older and the other one younger. The younger was the same as the one before, but the older was completely different.

The moment Michelle appeared in front of him, he frowned and attacked without thinking. Since he wasn’t able to sense her presence until she stopped right in front of him, he considered her a threat to the city. He couldn’t have known that he didn’t sense Michelle’s presence because it just wasn’t there.

Using her Shadow Spirit Steps, Michelle moved so quickly that she stopped in front of the guards before they could even sense she was nearby. Because within a split second, she closed the distance from a place where they couldn’t even see her in the distance, to a place right in front of them.

When the older guard attacked Michelle, she once again activated her Shadow Spirit Steps to dodge and frowned a bit. She had no clue as to why a city at the border of the lower realm and the Land of Exile was so heavily guarded, but the fact that she was blocked and attacked at the entrance was annoying her.

She didn’t care about the situation in the city. She just wanted a place where she could place the twelve thousand soulless people before releasing their souls. And the old guard was in her way.

With a sigh, Michelle decided to take the radical way even though she originally wanted to avoid it.

Activating her Shadow Spirit Steps once again, she just passed by the old guard and snuck into the city, no longer caring about the turmoil it would cause.

She didn’t look at anything and continued using her Shadow Spirit Steps to get to the tavern. There, she finally disabled them and frowned when she saw the atmosphere. It was nothing like she remembered.

Walking to the bar, Michelle sat down and looked at the old tavern lady. "My lovely bar maiden, what happened here for everyone to suddenly be so quiet and serious?" she asked with a bright, sweet smile adorning her lips.

The same as before, Michelle couldn’t explain why when she was with the old tavern lady, the childishness she thought she had long lost was brought out, making her smile like a fool. But she didn’t mind it. She was just curious what it was about the old woman that made her act that way.

Before the old woman could answer Michelle’s question, the old woman’s face froze a bit. At the same time, a playful and enigmatic voice filled the strangely quiet tavern. "Why have you never shown me a smile like that?" Alexander asked as he walked downstairs.

The staircase was behind Michelle’s back, but she didn’t need to turn around to know that it was Alexander. Also, before she could turn around, she felt someone rest his chin on her shoulder and wrap his arms around her waist. She was sitting on a high chair, so it was easy for Alexander to do so.

Michelle’s sweet smile slowly twisted into one icy and dreadful, but at the same time so stunning that the old tavern lady nearly gasped out loud when she saw it. Unknown if from fear or from being stunned.

Unfortunately, Alexander couldn’t see the change in Michelle’s expression. But he could perfectly feel the shift in Michelle’s mood. And that made his grin grow wider. Slowly, he lifted his hand to Michelle’s chin and forced her to turn her head to the side a bit so he could see that cold smile.

But what he saw was something he didn’t expect. He expected to be met with a pair of scarlet eyes, concealing rage, and with a lazily cold smile, signaling him to piss off. But instead, he saw a pair of clear purple eyes, with unconcealed coldness, but also strange calmness within them, and a stunning, chilly smile, taking breaths away.

All that coldness coupled with the iciness of Michelle’s skin and the silver color of her hair just made her seem even more like a mad beauty, twisted and dangerous, but cold.

"Are you angry at me?" Alexander asked with a chuckle.

"Do I seem so?" Michelle asked back, tilting her head a bit. Even her voice was tinged with something cold and cruel.

"No!" Alexander laughed a bit. "Your eyes aren’t red, so at least, you aren’t enraged," he said matter-of-factly. "But your face looks like that of an enraged person. So what should I make of this?" His grin grew the more he looked at Michelle.

"You can make anything out of it! I have no reason to stop you!" Michelle shrugged, pushing Alexander away from her. "But I have a question for you."

That made Alexander raise a brow. He definitely didn’t expect Michelle to ask him something. But when he thought about the incident in the cave, he had a perfect idea about what she would ask. "You want to know why you only slept for two days or so?"

Being seen through, a flicker of surprise flashed through Michelle’s purple eyes. "Yes..." she finally nodded. "Even now, my soul energy is far from recovered, so why am I already awake?" she questioned, her expression quickly returning to her usual calm and stoic one.

"That’s actually very simple," Alexander said with a smile. He enjoyed watching how Michelle’s expression changed, especially when it deviated from his expectations and he saw new expressions he had never seen before. "Let’s say your soul energy has a limit, and when it’s reached, it can be considered that your soul energy has been depleted. Then, for a recovery, you would need to sleep for a long time."

As Alexander spoke, he let go of Michelle and sat on the chair next to her, resting his head on the palm of his hand. "But in actuality, that level is not really the threshold of your soul energy. With enough will, you can push through it and use the soul energy unreachable for anyone else. This part of soul energy is much harder to use, but that makes it easier to recover. Also, using it brings another benefit."

"Is the benefit related to the sleeping time?" Michelle raised a brow curiously.

"Yes!" Alexander nodded. "Of course, after overusing your soul energy like that, you will have to sleep, but only until the so-called threshold level is reached, in other words, until the level when your soul energy would normally be considered depleted. After that, you can wake up even without the rest of your soul energy back."

Michelle frowned a bit after listening to Alexander. "I guess there is a price for that."

"Doesn’t the fact that it’s hard to use seem like enough of a price?" Alexander asked with a bright smile.

But Michelle just shot him a glare, as if asking him if he considered her that stupid. "If that was the only price, then it wouldn’t be considered a price. It would just be considered as a skill only available to resilient people!" she finally decided to speak.
