Chapter 189: Taking Care (2)

Chapter 189: Taking Care (2)

Arren’s mouth parted, looking at how Spade held his hand tightly, albeit with much difficulty. The alpha was already shivering; his hands and arms noticeably trembled slightly.

He raised his haze and stared at Spade’s face, his lips were also clenched tight, forcefully keeping them from shivering as well, and the way the alpha’s eyelashes fluttered, revealed just how much he was in pain.

He hurriedly tends to Spade, worriedly wrapping his arms around his alpha. "Spade, are you cold? What do you want me to do?" Arren lay beside the alpha while embracing him, focusing fully on Spade.

In this position, he could really feel the way Spade’s body shivered and the way he was breathing, ragged and heavy. The distress and worry he was feeling intensified. It was hard to see his alpha like this; he was also suffering with him.

While hugging Spade in his arms, and giving him body heat, he also observed his face, touching his forehead and fixing the towel in it.

"I’m fi...ne," Spade responded in his hoarse voice; it was also slow, as though there was a lump in his throat, making it harder to say his words.

Arren’s lips clenched, complaining inside: Is this what you call fine? You can barely talk, Spade!

Yet, he couldn’t say it out loud either. He didn’t want to reprimand the alpha, knowing he was already in pain from the headache. All he needed to do was be with him and take care of Spade.

He watched Spade’s face and witnessed how his face contorted slightly, wincing from pain. And what he could do was stroke his body and even brush his hair, hoping to give some calming effect, even though he knew it couldn’t.

It was truly a rare side of him when Spade looked so vulnerable—a side that Arren hoped he would never see often. Was this also how Spade felt when he was sick? His eyes mellowed, pursing his lips from the thought.

Fortunately, it only took less than an hour of waiting before the imperial doctor came. During that wait, aside from embracing Spade and constantly changing the towel to keep it slightly damp and cool, he was nesting his head in the alpha’s neck and giving kisses on his collarbone. He also made sure to envelop the alpha with his pheromones, as he noticed it was quite effective.

Throughout, he didn’t say anything since Spade might respond to him, which he didn’t want to happen. He only wanted him to rest. Arren always thought it was better if he was already asleep; at least he wouldn’t be in so much pain. Yet he could feel that Spade was still very much awake.

He didn’t know why the alpha insisted on enduring and suppressing his pain. And in silence, Arren knew the answer immediately. Spade... was used to it. He was in the position where he had the whole empire on his shoulders, and throughout these years, the alpha had already become used to suppressing and controlling his emotions, pain, thoughts, and desires.

Thinking of this, his hold on Spade tightened, and he pressed his body even closer to the alpha. He also noticed that Spade also held him tightly. He closed his eyes and kissed the alpha’s neck assuringly.

When the imperial doctor arrived, Arren sat in the bed, but he was still holding Spade since the alpha wouldn’t let him go either. The doctor, who was an elderly woman and a beta, approached them. Ace and two other royal guards came with her; the three looked at Spade, who was lying beside Arren.

Every one of them had a worried face, and Arren nodded to them. They were Spade’s loyal subordinates; it wasn’t a surprise that they were worried for him. After all, it was not only for Arren that Spade being sick was a rare sight.

They stood behind, positioning themselves with their backs straight and solemn faces as though facing an enemy. The imperial doctor was the only one who approached the bed, she looked amiable and gentle, yet there was still nervousness in her eyes that could be easily noticed.

Arren knew why, but she wasn’t there to be assured but to check Spade’s condition. In his eyes, at this moment, Spade was the most important.

Still, he didn’t forget to give her a friendly and polite smile, and she calmed down somewhat. He didn’t say anything and let her do what she needed to do; small talk was a waste of time when Spade was sick.

She was a professional and quickly examined Spade. Fortunately, Arren almost neutralized the chaotic pheromones coming off Spade earlier, so it wasn’t that oppressive anymore and she could take a closer look at the alpha.

As one of the top doctors for the imperial hospital, she met Spade a lot of times so she could quickly focus on what she was doing without becoming dazzled by the emperor’s presence, but Arren was the one making it awkward for her.

Arren didn’t know what the doctor was thinking, since at least it wasn’t showing in her face; he only watched everything. His identity as the emperor’s lover and the future empress was also a status that was held highly in the empire, so the way he watched intently the doctor as though an instructor observing his student gave pressure on the beta woman.

Fortunately, it was finished quickly and successfully without any hiccups. At this point, Arren eagerly talked and asked the doctor about Spade’s condition. The worry had been eating him since earlier.

"How is he, doctor?" His phoenix eyes fixedly stared at her, holding Spade’s hand, squeezing and massaging it. The three royal guards also looked at her, and the pressure on her increased.

She exhaled and calmly adjusted her glasses, pocketing her left hand in one of her pockets, calming herself. Her eyes glanced at Spade’s figure, which looked like he was sleeping. In fact, all of them thought he was sleeping except Arren.

Her gaze momentarily stopped at Spade before she shifted her gaze to Arren and answered him. "His Majesty’s fever is really quite alarming with his high temperature. And with his vitals, there’s also a sign of fatigue and perhaps a lack of sleep."

Arren listened to her intently; his brows knitted, and he stared at Spade. He knew that Spade was used to not sleeping and overworking, especially when his schedule was hectic, and that what he settled for after the vacation was enormous piles of work.

Did Spade overdo it and not sleep at all? His eyes widened slightly, and he fell silent for a moment. Spade was probably too stressed now with what was happening in the empire and the organization. And he... Before he could think further, he shook this thought off his head.

This time wasn’t for him, he needed to focus on Spade first before thinking of his issues. Exhaling deeply, with worry evident in his eyes, he raised his gaze to the doctor again and inquired again.

"Is it needed for Spade to be admitted to the hospital?" Once he got the signal from the doctor, they would rush into the hospital immediately, even if Spade didn’t want to!

As the doctor was about to nod and tell Arren that it was better for Spade to be admitted to the hospital so he could be examined further and his condition could be observed accordingly, she happened to glance at Spade’s face.

And she froze, not daring to say anything anymore as she made eye contact with those intimidating and oppressive amber eyes. All the words in her throat got stuck, and Spade, whom she thought was sleeping, opened his eyes slightly and looked at her. Even though there were signs of fever and he could barely open his eyes properly, his eyes held the same dominance as before.

Spade was looking at her as though he were giving her a warning through his eyes, and the alpha shook his head slightly. before closing his eyes again before Arren noticed what was happening.

The doctor gulped, averting his gaze quickly. Her heart pounded nervously. Arren frowned, not knowing why the doctor didn’t respond to her. He glanced at Spade, tilting his head in confusion. The alpha still had his eyes closed, then why she looked as though she saw a ghost?

"Doctor?" he called and then repeated his question. "Do we need to admit Spade to the hospital?"

The three royal guards also saw what unfolded earlier as they were observing Spade; aside from Arren, everyone in the room saw it.

Calming herself, she swallowed, not daring to look in Spade’s direction again. She forced a smile on Arren and gave an answer that was completely different from what she was supposed to say.

"It’s fine, Young Master. We... don’t need to admit His Majesty to the hospital. We can take care of him here." The doctor answered quite smoothly, even though she was already crying inside.

Arren’s brow couldn’t help but arch up. "Are you sure?"

The doctor nodded without saying anything anymore, fidgeting with her fingers.

Looking at her, who still seemed distracted, he was suspicious but let it go. "Then, if you say so. I’m still not reassured, please, stay here in the mansion for tonight so I can seek you out and you can observe Spade’s condition."

Since she already said it, Arren wouldn’t persist, but on the premise that there was still a doctor in the house. The doctor readily agreed, gave her prescription to Arren, and instructed him on the medicines. After telling Arren that he could seek her out later, the doctor exited the room as though someone was chasing her, and the royal guards also left.

And soon, there were only the two of them again. Arren was still in shock at how the doctor dashed and left. He looked at Spade, and his eyes narrowed suspiciously. Why did he have a feeling, his man had a hand in this?
