Chapter 959: Chapter 216: Offending Two at Once
Mo Heng looked at Pei Wendong’s expression, then glanced at the siblings Xie Yi and Xie Ze, his brow slightly furrowed, "What happened?"
Pei Wendong felt somewhat embarrassed to tell him.
Mo Heng looked at him, waiting for an explanation.
Seeing that he was ready to take over as the steward, Pei Wendong took a breath and said, "When I saved Ms. Xie... I compromised her reputation, I’ve already decided to take responsibility for Ms. Xie."
Xie Yi’s face was flushed red as she looked down.
Mo Heng turned to Shen Songming, they had left early to head down the Changjiang River to Jiangnan, so how had they still managed to find trouble?
Shen Songming gave him a look of exasperation, Pei Wendong was a living, breathing man; he had to keep an eye on business, stay alert for war, he was busy with all sorts of things, and on top of that, he had to take care of Jiujiu and Xixi, would he have time to keep tabs on Pei Wendong every day!? He had saved someone outside, was he supposed to throw them away!? Besides, Wendong was already fifteen, an adult in his own right, he obviously thought about the consequences of his actions, so why overinterfere?
"Then send someone to the Capital Jingcheng to learn about the situation. From now on, report directly to me about any issues," Mo Heng said, then instructed Feng Wei to organize it.
Pei Wendong thought of his eldest sister who was still ill and nodded in agreement, then asked about this year’s imperial examination, "Last year’s autumn imperial examination didn’t take place, will there be an extra session this year?" He wanted to pass the exam and start shouldering some responsibilities.
Mo Heng looked at him, then glanced at Xie Yi, his eyes dimming slightly, "If The Imperial Court decides to hold an extra session, they will post the notice in advance." He didn’t have any news on that.
Xiao Yong inwardly sighed, Brother-in-law Qin was now a Fifth Rank general, and although outside people didn’t know their eldest sister was the Deity General Pei Hansan of Mortar Barracks, the Grandpa Emperor knew, and certainly their father and the others did too. After Sister Qin was injured, the Grandpa Emperor couldn’t publicly recognize her military achievements, but he would surely compensate her in some other way.
Although the Xie family was known for its scholarly tradition, they had produced only Magistrate Xie, a single official. Xie Yi was orphaned, and Xiao Yong felt it was inappropriate for Wendong to marry her as his primary wife, especially since he was now eager to pursue official ranks.
Shen Songming, on the other hand, saw nothing ill-suited about the match. He believed in the freedom of love, as long as Pei Wendong and Xie Yi liked each other. Since the Xie family had already cast out Xie Yi and Xie Ze, they would certainly not interfere in their matters anymore, and her maternal family was not of high status. Pei Wendong’s prospects were surely a concern for the Xie family. And Pei Qin wouldn’t oppose them just because the other party had no parents or property.
The others all found their own places to stay, but Xie Yi and Xie Ze, the siblings, ended up living there.
Shen Songming hadn’t finished speaking a few words with Pei Qin and hadn’t left yet.
When Pei Qin awoke, she sat down with her siblings and Shen Songming to have a proper talk.
"Sun Tiezhu and Sun Quanliang disguised themselves as refugees and returned to Yuanyang when you captured Huaiqing Mansion. I’ve had someone check on the home front, and all is settled, so no need to worry! If you don’t wish to go to Capital Jingcheng, you can stay in Daxing, it’s quieter here, and more fitting for recuperation," Shen Songming repeated the situation at home.
Looking at his displeased face, Pei Qin chuckled, "Thank you!" Jiujiu and Xixi have been well taken care of, fatter than when they were with her.
Shen Songming snorted, "If it’s about the kids, no need to thank me! Jiujiu is my goddaughter, and I’m Xixi’s father!"
Pei Qin looked at Mo Heng in confusion, since when did he make Xixi someone else’s child?
Mo Heng’s face turned black as coal, and he didn’t speak with a stern expression.
Xixi brought over some pastries, "Daddy! Daddy, eat!"
Pei Qin was dissatisfied that Little Radish wasn’t recognizing her as her mother, wondering how she could have recognized Mo Heng in just half a year. She then saw the little one toddling over to Shen Songming, offering him the snacks.
Shen Songming happily held her in his lap and raised an eyebrow towards Mo Heng and Pei Qin.
"Damn it, Shen Songming! She is my daughter!" Pei Qin would have jumped up to thrash him if not for the injury on her chest. Even Jiujiu was calling him godfather, so at most Xixi should do the same, calling someone directly ’daddy’ must have been his doing!
Shen Songming was smug, "You left your daughter with me and ran off with a man, so I taught her to call me daddy! If you refuse to want her, I’ll take Xixi away!"
"Nonsense! If you want one, go have your own!" Her daughter was born at the risk of her own life!
"Xixi! Come with daddy!" Shen Songming grunted and walked away with Xixi in his arms.
Having called him ’daddy’ for half a year, she naturally followed him when he said to leave. She even reached out and called, "Sister!" inviting Jiujiu to join them.
Jiujiu didn’t go; she had just reunited with her mother and was clinging to her.
Pei Yuan watched the two arguing till they were red in the face and neck, and couldn’t help but laugh and mediate, "Eldest sister! Maternal bonds are natural, it won’t take many days for Xixi to cling to you again! It’s only been half a year! Jiujiu is already sticking to mother’s side."
