Chapter 911: Chapter 202: Going to Take Office Together_2
Fang Li’s face changed, and he gnashed his teeth, cursing, "Vicious little slut!"
Widow Yang clung to Fang Li, demanding he find a doctor for her. If she really could no longer bear children in the future, and knowing that Fang Li was not a man of constant affection, she must have a child, have a son—to turn her fate around in the Fang family!
Fang Li was in a tough position. Inviting a doctor would risk public knowledge, and he feared he might not escape the notorious eighty whips.
"The people in the village already know. Hasn’t your family already threatened them into silence?" Widow Yang resented, seeing her in such pain without his even inviting a doctor.
"Then I’ll go call the doctor!" thought Fang Li, getting up and leaving the house.
Not until he was outside did he realize he had no money, and he returned home to get some.
Previously, he had some private funds, but he had spent them all in Baoning County. He had imagined living lavishly, playing the grand lord, but Fang Liuming was so poor that he was served one dish per meal and didn’t even know how to accept the silver offered to him. His private funds, too, had gradually been depleted.
The family’s silver was with Old Scholar Fang and Grandma Fang. Hearing that he wanted it to pay for Widow Yang’s medical visit, Grandma Fang bluntly told him to get out, "That despicable harlot doesn’t deserve a penny of our money!"
Fang Li’s face turned black with fury, and he looked towards Lady Yu.
"Didn’t Pei Qin give you two large packs of tonics?" Lady Yu said coldly.
"Her medicine must be intended to harm Yu Lan. And you’re letting Yu Lan take it!?" Fang Li exclaimed angrily.
Lady Yu scoffed, "Then go invite a better doctor! If the one from the town isn’t adequate, get one from the county. If that’s not good enough, go fetch one from Capital Jingcheng!"
Fang Li clenched his fists, his itch to punch her growing as he watched her scoff disdainfully.
"If you dare hit my mother again, I will never acknowledge you as my father!" Fang Liuyang had been watching him, and seeing him raise his fist, he roared.
Fang Li, angered by his son’s furious glare, retorted, "You little bastard! Whether you acknowledge me or not, I am still your father!"
Fang Liuyang clenched his teeth and glared at him, "Do you think my elder brother would acknowledge you either!?"
Fang Li glanced around; Fang Liuming was not home. Only Pei Qian stood there, coldly despising him. He grew frustrated and lowered his fist, "If anything happens to Yu Lan because of the medicine you made her drink, you won’t escape the blame! Better take out some silver to get her a proper doctor!"
Grandma Fang had none, and Lady Yu watched coldly, ignoring him.
Fang Li then turned his idea toward Pei Qian, "The medicine came from your elder sister. If something happens to Yu Lan, she’ll be the first one who can’t escape! You’d better spend some silver to cure Yu Lan!"
Pei Qian laughed in disdain, "As her father-in-law, you’re pinching your daughter-in-law’s dowry to treat a concubine who’s not yet part of the family!?"
Fang Li knew that discussing this might sound unseemly, but, "Yu Lan is about to enter the family, and would be your concubine. You, being the younger one..."
"Ptui!" Grandma Fang interrupted him, spitting fiercely, "Are you brain-damaged by evil? That promiscuous wretch ran off to a temple to meet a man, carrying an illegitimate child, and you, having read the Holy Book for years, don’t even have a shred of integrity! You actually demand dowry from your daughter-in-law to treat her, and what kind of concubine can she be? Even if she enters the family, she would just be a despicable concubine! Qianqian is the legitimate Young Lady of the household. She has to be shown respect by everyone!"
Fang Li looked ugly, "Yu Lan is with me..."
"You think you’re something special!? You don’t even understand the basics, yet you dream of being a great lord in the Official Family!" Grandma Fang pointed at his nose and scolded furiously.
Rules... Fang Li hadn’t thought it through. Now, with Yang Yulan suffering immensely, he just wanted to save her first. Seeing that he couldn’t get money from home, Fang Li was furious and felt helpless.
"That Widow Yang, always covered in makeup, must have saved quite a bit of silver for makeup alone. She planned to take the Fang family’s silver the moment she entered the door!?" Pei Qian mocked.
Fang Li, frustrated, left in a huff to find the village doctor to examine Widow Yang.
The village doctor was reluctant and only prescribed her two sets of medicine.
Since Fang Li had no money to pay, the doctor asked if Widow Yang had eaten the medicine Pei Qin provided. If not, he would take it in exchange.
To think two sets of medicine would require exchange for the medicine Pei Qin provided, Fang Li clenched his teeth, took the medicine to Widow Yang, brewed it for her, comforted her briefly, then took Pei Qin’s medicine to the doctor’s home.
The Village Doctor examined the two large packs of medicine. Many were similar to what he prescribed, but of higher quality, including several precious ones. Widow Yang, with her petty mind, dared not consume them, so he simply accepted them.
Upon hearing this, Widow Yang’s resentment only grew. Yet, in fear of harming her own body, she took out some silver herself, asking Fang Li to find the doctor again to save her life.
After several trips, Fang Li finally brought the doctor over.
After consultation, the doctor prescribed the same medicines, adding, "Just consume more doses and recuperate for some days and there should be no worries."
"And later on... will this affect my ability to bear children?" Widow Yang asked directly, not minding the taboo.
"If you recover well, you naturally can," the doctor replied before leaving with his medicine box.
Widow Yang had been in pain for a whole day and night, bleeding continuously, until she finally took the medicine and fell asleep.
Exhausted, Fang Li thought of Fang Zhi, who had also been beaten by Pei Qin, and wondered how he was doing. He then went to see if he could borrow some silver.
Fang Zhi was badly beaten. The doctor, knowing Pei Qin was responsible, cursed her as deserving and refused to treat him.
It was his daughter-in-law who, grumbling, took him to another village for treatment, claiming he had been injured in a fight. Even that cost quite an unjust amount.
Hearing that Widow Yang had miscarried and was now asking him for silver, Fang Zhi gave Fang Li a nasty look and spoke bitterly of how heartless and cruel the Fang family were, and how vicious and overbearing Pei Qin was. This only fueled Fang Li’s hatred further, yet he was still not resigned, and Fang Zhi advised him, "If you were to stay with your sister-in-law in the village, you’d be doomed to poor meals, never seeing even a coin in hand! Better to take your sister-in-law out, as parents-in-law, shouldn’t she listen to you rather than letting you eat pickles and porridge while they dine on meat!? Will you let yourself leave home without a penny?"
Taking Yang Yulan and his eldest son back to his post was very tempting to Fang Li. Now at home, nobody listened to him; nobody even considered him worthy. Er Lang, that little bastard, was also declaring he didn’t acknowledge him as his father. He was now effectively pampering only his eldest son! He had to stick with his eldest son—that was the rule!
