The Eldest Daughter of a Rural Family
Chapter 91 Lack of Upbringing(1)_1

Chapter 91: Chapter 91 Lack of Upbringing(1)_1

Pei Wenbo looked on enviously, listening to the thumping sounds of chopping dumpling fillings in their kitchen, feeling incredibly jealous, "At noon, we’ll eat meat too!"

"How much did you sell those bamboo rats for? You just had meat, and now you’re chopping more, you’re going to make dumplings, aren’t you!?" Grandma Miao said, and then she reached out to open the wattle gate.

The wattle gate was simply made of wooden sticks and boards, and it was previously latched just to fend off the honest folks, useless against someone like Grandma Miao.

Si Ya detested Grandma Miao the most, who used to pick faults and curse them over nothing, and now that she saw them making money from selling bamboo rats, she came over to take advantage, knocking on their door for benefits. So, while Lady Fang was kneading dough, Si Ya locked the wattle gate with a large copper lock.

Seeing this, Grandma Miao pursed her lips in displeasure, "They even locked the door!?"

Si Ya poked her head out of the house to look and snorted lightly, paying her no mind.

Grandma Miao started calling for them to open the gate.

"Ignore her! She’s always calling us wild children and comes over for handouts as soon as she sees we’ve done well—shameless!" Si Ya cursed angrily.

Lady Fang frowned at her, signaling not to swear, but she also ignored Grandma Miao.

Pei Qin took the cleaver from Lady Fang’s hands and quickly finished chopping a basin full of dumpling filling.

Considering the position of the sun, it was getting late, so Lady Fang washed and hung up the chopping board and began to knead the dough and roll out the wrappers.

Pei Qin, San Ya, and Si Ya squeezed into the small kitchen to make dumplings together.

Plump, white dumplings were made, and Pei Wendong couldn’t help but swallow. Remembering how Pei Qin said it was unsightly to add his mouth and fingers in, he dared not to swallow again and just stared at the steamer gradually filling with dumplings.

Seeing that they were nearly done making dumplings, San Ya cleaned the pot, filled it with water, and set it to boil.

Pei Wendong wanted to come in and tend to the pot, but there was no room to enter.

"The wrapping is almost finished. You take care of the pot!" Lady Fang finished rolling out the wrappers and began to make dumplings herself.

As the dumplings boiled, everyone was filled with anticipation.

Watching the white, plump dumplings come out of the pot, Lady Fang looked at her children, feeling both a sharp pang and a soft warmth in her heart.

"One bowl each, that’s the rule!" Pei Qin said, handing a bowl to Pei Wendong.

"Thank you, eldest sister!" Pei Wendong exclaimed joyfully, holding a bowl of dumplings. Even though he couldn’t finish it all, he felt he could devour two more bowls.

Pei Qin drained the broth from his bowl. Without extra bowls, she poured vinegar directly onto the dumplings and sat down on the small stool by the pot to eat.

Lady Fang stood behind the stove, while Pei Wendong also stood by the stovetop. San Ya and Pei Qin squatted beside the hearth, side by side, and Si Ya squeezed in at the doorway. All of them just gathered inside the little kitchen to eat together.

Someone kicked at the outer door, accompanied by quiet cursing.

Si Ya peered outside and saw it was Pei Wenbo, "Why are you kicking my door!?"

"Give me a reason not to kick it when you’re eating dumplings!" Pei Wenbo retorted while relentlessly kicking the door again.

"Aren’t you also about to prepare meat? Why run over to my house!" Si Ya scolded, her little face darkening.

Pei Qin took a glance at her, "Anger harms the liver, rage damages the kidneys. Just eat your food and don’t mind his nonsense!"

Si Ya pouted and sat back down, deciding to ignore Pei Wenbo outside.

Pei Wenlee pulled him to go back home, "Why are you looking at their doorway? Even if you keep looking, those lowlifes won’t let you eat! Let’s go home! Our family is also going to have meat!"

Pei Houli had gone to the market that day and managed to sell a few handmade baskets, and with Pei Wenbo making a fuss about wanting meat, Lady Zhu agreed to cut some meat, so they bought half a catty of meat to take home.

Though their house was missing Madam Fang and the others, half a catty of meat still had to be shared among several mouths. Once tossed into the vegetables and stir-fried, the meat didn’t seem so apparent.

Pei Wenbo insisted on having his share, not letting the others eat more.
