Chapter 905: Chapter 200: Longing to Die Soon_3
Mo Heng reached out to embrace her tightly, "I’ll go."
Pei Qin watched as his face pressed against hers, then opened her mouth and bit two rows of teeth marks onto his neck.
Mo Heng took a deep breath, darkening his gaze as he tucked her into the quilt, then he got up to hold his little daughter.
The wet nurse had already dressed Xixi.
"Bring the young miss over!" Mo Heng opened the door.
Responding to his call, the wet nurse brought Xixi over.
Mo Heng took his little daughter, bringing her inside to soothe her.
Xixi had just turned a month old when he left, so she didn’t recognize her father at all. Staring at the strange man, Xixi’s eyes filled with tears as she gazed at him.
Father and daughter stared at each other, the big eyes meeting the small.
Seeing she was growing more like Pei Qin, Mo Heng felt tenderness blooming in his heart as he held her and cooed.
Watching him for a while, Xixi, not recognizing him, burst into tears again with a loud "Waah."
"She’s hungry!" Pei Qin said, slightly exasperated.
Mo Heng furrowed his brows and then brought her into the inner room.
Once in her mother’s arms, Xixi cried a few times and then, reaching out her little hands, started to pull at her mother’s clothes, searching for food on her own.
Watching her eat with gusto, even though she resembled Pei Qin, Mo Heng couldn’t help but frown, "Is it time to wean her off?"
Little Radish was just over six months old, not yet seven.
Pei Qin, too lazy to argue, yawned, her eyes tired and squinting.
Just as Xixi had eaten nearly enough but still wasn’t full, Mo Heng pulled her from Pei Qin’s embrace and handed her over to the wet nurse, "Feed her some complementary food, but don’t give her too much."
The wet nurse complied, taking Xixi back to feed her egg custard.
Mo Heng returned to the inner chamber, scooped up Pei Qin, tucked her in properly, "Sleep a bit more."
Pei Qin opened her eyes to glance at him and, not hearing Xixi cry anymore, closed her eyes and drifted back to sleep.
Mo Heng lay beside her for a while longer, and when she still hadn’t woken up, he quietly got up.
Jiujiu hadn’t seen her father for over half a year, yet within a single meal, she was already affectionately calling him "Daddy" this and "Daddy" that, "Dad! Mom doesn’t want to do the accounts, she wants me to do them!"
"What have you learned?" Mo Heng asked her.
Jiujiu had just started learning, and she knew only a few simple addition and subtraction calculations.
Mo Heng went to the study and saw piles of account books stacked on the desk, only a little had been sorted through. Pei Qin was too lazy, leaving heaps of work to be done in one go. She tended to be enthusiastic about things for only three days at a time.
He organized the accounts a little; the first half of the year’s accounts were still sorted by him, so he continued to work on them.
By the time Pei Qin woke up at noon, more than half of her account books had already been sorted through.
The household staff were all smiles, happy to see the master return, and the lady of the house was pleased as well. At least for this year’s New Year, she wouldn’t have to spend it alone with her brother and the two young ladies.
But Mo Heng hadn’t planned to spend the New Year at home. After several months of strategizing and enduring half a year away from home, he couldn’t possibly hand over his achievements to someone else.
"Leaving tomorrow?" Pei Qin raised an eyebrow.
Mo Heng’s handsome face darkened, "The day after!" He hadn’t even been back for a day, and she was already pushing him out, truly not missing him one bit!
"Tomorrow or the day after, it’s all the same!" Pei Qin had the kitchen make his favorite dishes for dinner, and if anything was missing, she would buy it tomorrow.
Zhang Gengshan had already bought everything early in the morning. Over the past few years, the young master had hardly been picky with his food. As long as the dishes were made by his wife, he ate even those he previously disliked without changing his expression.
After resting for an afternoon, Pei Qin made a few dishes for dinner.
After eating, Mo Heng had the energy and strength to toss and turn with her in bed at night.
The next day, Pei Qin got up supporting her back and cursed a certain man who was feeling refreshed to no end. She mentally jabbed little voodoo dolls, "Cook whatever you want to eat! Eat it or not, I don’t care! I’m not serving you!"
Seeing her dark circles under her eyes, Mo Heng asked Jiujiu to help him by passing things and made soup in the kitchen. He also steamed custard buns and milk mantou, cooked rice porridge, and stir-fried a few small dishes.
Pei Qin hummed and waited in the room with Xixi, mother and daughter, for the meal.
Pei Wendong, Xiao Yong, and Chang Yonglin returned and joined them for a meal.
With the year-end examinations approaching, although Pei Wendong’s and Xiao Yong’s knowledge was solid, there was still a possibility of being sabotaged by others. Chang Yonglin would also take part in the spring examinations after the New Year. Landlord Chang was hoping that after he attained his scholarly title, he could arrange a marriage for him.
Mo Heng reviewed the three young men’s knowledge and gave special guidance to Chang Yonglin. In the evening, the whole family sat down together for dinner.
"There are only a few days left. Are you still going to leave, brother-in-law?" Pei Wendong was busy preparing for the examinations at the county school, and with his third sister married off, the house was left with only his elder sister, Jiujiu, and Xixi, which was too quiet.
"Yes. I’ll come back after this battle is over." Mo Heng had to be there personally, as he had been preparing for so long.
Pei Wendong knew he was going to be a military officer and would inevitably be on the battlefield. Rather than asking him to stay home for the New Year, he wished him to take care and be safe.
Pei Qin packed for him a bundle of grenades, an old-fashioned handgun, and a big bag of bullets, "Take this for self-defense. I’ve made a silencer for the gun. I tested it in the mountains on a rainy day, and the result wasn’t very good, but it barely works."
Holding it, Mo Heng noticed the workmanship was a bit rough and it felt heavy in his hands, "Did you make only this one?"
"If you want more, make them yourself!" Pei Qin glared at him. It had taken her over half a month to make this one functional piece.
Mo Heng pressed her head down and bent to kiss her lips. He didn’t like her always thinking about Shen Songming! The thought of her worrying for Shen made him jealous! He wanted her mind and eyes to be full of him, him alone! Afraid that his absence would diminish his place in her heart, he couldn’t bear to become less important than someone else.
"You haven’t even been to the battlefield, and you’re already dying young!" Pei Qin kicked him a couple of times.
Only then did Mo Heng embrace her and sleep for a while. Before dawn, he got up, took Feng Wei and two guards, and left.
Waking up when the sun was high, Pei Qin grabbed her pillow and hammered it fiercely. In her past life, she didn’t remember owing anyone money. This deadpan Mo Heng must have been killed by her, which is why she had to suffer under his oppression in this life!
However, he had at least sorted her accounts for her, which was somewhat useful.
Huang Qiu and Xue Dong came with a large bundle of furs, "Madam! These were brought back by the master. They can make two large fur coats!" They asked her what to do with them.
Thinking about a large fur coat gave Pei Qin the chills. She wasn’t a lady of high status, so why wear such a thing? She had messages sent to Pei Yuan and Pei Qian, calling them over to divide them, and each could make a fur-lined jacket.
After the message was delivered, the two soon arrived. Pei Yuan brought Happy along.
After chatting for a while, Pei Qin asked Pei Qian about Lady Yu’s visit to the doctor for her ears, "Did they say it could be cured?"
Fang Liuming and Pei Qian took Lady Yu to Lin Mansion to see a capable doctor for her ears, and had just returned.
Pei Qian shook her head, "It can’t be fully cured, only somewhat improved. We brought back a lot of medicine; first, we’ll try and see."
"What about my uncle?" Pei Yuan asked.
"He’s still at the temple! We’ll bring him back for the New Year." Pei Qian mentioned Fang Li with a sour face.
"He seems to be able to endure it. Hopefully, he understands grandfather’s intentions," Pei Yuan sighed.
"That would be strange," said Pei Qian, who had never been optimistic about Fang Li, wishing he would just die sooner.
While they were discussing whether to make coats with straight sleeves or cuffed sleeves, and what kind of embroidery to use, a servant girl sent by the Fang family arrived to bring news, "Young Lady! There’s a commotion at home! The head of the family has returned, claiming that Widow Yang is carrying his child. He plans to marry Widow Yang!"
