Chapter 84: Chapter 84 Eating White Flour (2)_1
Lady Fang looked at Grandma Miao outside with suspicion.
As soon as Si Ya saw her, she didn’t have a good expression on her face. Every time they went up the mountain to collect leaves, Grandma Miao would accuse them of messing with her gathered firewood if she saw them.
"My, my! Your family split up and now you live like royalty! Are you really eating white flour now!?" Grandma Miao eyed the white flour pancake in their hands, dripping with jealousy.
"Is there something you need, Grandma Miao?" Lady Fang asked without further explanation.
"Oh! I didn’t see your family yesterday." Grandma Miao said with a chuckle, probing mysteriously, "I heard you sold bamboo rats for silver coin, is that where you catch them, up in the mountain behind the village? I heard bamboo rats are like mice, big like rabbits. How do you catch them, huh?"
Upon hearing this, Si Ya pulled a face and retorted, "What business is it of yours how we caught them!"
Grandma Miao’s face soured as she forced a laugh, "I’m just curious, given that bamboo rats run as fast as rabbits, how did you manage to catch them!?"
"Why should we have to tell you!" Si Ya glared at her.
"How can you speak to me like that! I’m still your elder!" Grandma Miao rebuked her irritably.
Lady Fang shot Si Ya a glance, warning her not to be rude. But to Grandma Miao’s prying, she only said, "We caught them in the hills, if they run fast, we catch them fast!"
Grandma Miao looked at her, and then at Pei Qin and the others, her laugh carrying a note of scorn, "You ladies really are something, even managing to chase down rats!" she cursed inside. Damn it! They’re not spilling!
Pei Qin finished eating and put down her bowl.
San Ya took her empty bowl to the kitchen to wash up.
Si Ya looked displeased at Grandma Miao, "If you want to catch bamboo rats too, you’ll need to call a few more people! Just one or two wouldn’t stop them!"
"Are you heading up the mountain again? No one was home yesterday. Did you go up there too?" Grandma Miao continued to pry.
"We are indeed getting ready to leave!" Lady Fang hinted for her to leave.
Grandma Miao hurriedly asked which mountain they were going to and what they were taking, "I’ll get my son and grandson to check the mountain too!"
"We don’t have much with us, just a knife, a piece of rope, and two burlap bags." Lady Fang replied, hoping she would leave soon after hearing this.
Grandma Miao still insisted on looking around the house.
Si Ya blocked the doorway, glaring at her, "Why are you trying to squeeze into our house!?"
Grandma Miao huffed angrily, "You’re so young and yet so headstrong, that won’t do! Especially since it’s just you women!" she said with a pout as she went out the door.
"That damned old hag!" Si Ya cursed in anger.
"Let’s hurry up and get ready to leave!" urged Lady Fang.
Pei Qin looked at the several large bags in the house and rubbed her forehead. How she missed her little Mercedes! Now she didn’t even have a two-wheeled cart, let alone one with four wheels.
Resigned, they shouldered their belongings, locked the door, and set out, heading straight for Taiping Town to catch a ride.
Grandma Miao, who had followed them out, looked at the bags and woven baskets they carried with amazement, "Did they really catch so many!? Where are all these bamboo rats coming from? How much money will that sell for!?"
The villagers, stirred up by her commotion, also became suspicious, marveling that even a big mouse could sell for so much, and some immediately began inquiring about heading to the mountain.
Pei Qin and the others caught a ride and headed to the county seat. The fellow passengers also inquired about what they were carrying.
Si Ya blurted out that it was rabbits.
Lady Fang, unaware that she almost got swindled and taken to the Government Office by a government officer, figured that saying it was bamboo rats didn’t sound as good as rabbits, which is why Si Ya said rabbits.
Upon reaching the county seat, they got off the vehicle and headed straight for the Moon Restaurant with their load.
Pei Qin walked in front, calculating how much money they would make from this trip and what they should buy to take back.
Suddenly, Si Ya quickened her pace to catch up with her, whispering a warning, "Big sister! Someone is following us!"
