Chapter 784: Chapter 784 Ghost Shave (4)_1
"I beg of you, please spare them! I implore you!" If this continues, not only will Wenchen’s imperial examination be delayed, but Wenchen and Lady Chen are headed for disaster sooner or later.
"Then you’re begging the wrong person. With these bizarre occurrences, even enlightened masters can’t do anything; and I’m not a deity, how can I save them!? Besides, you’re seeking the wrong person’s help. Shouldn’t you be seeking Pei Wenjie instead!?" Pei Qin sneered.
"I only ask that you spare them this once!" Old Pei pleaded.
Pei Qin looked at him coldly, "If I hadn’t spared them, the real culprit would have been punished by now!"
Old Pei opened his mouth but failed to speak a word. Could the real murderer truly be Wensheng!?
Pei Qin had just spoken a few words with him in the front courtyard, saw that he had no face to beg further, snorted coldly, and turned to go back to the back courtyard.
Hong Xia and Lv Chun watched with cold eyes.
Old Pei moved his mouth but ultimately couldn’t bring himself to utter another plea and left.
The sky grew darker, and snow began to drift down; fewer people were out and about, most of them had returned home to nestle in.
As evening approached, Pei Wensheng disappeared.
Qian Wanxiu and Pei Zongli were so frightened that they quickly hired people to search everywhere. Upon inquiry, they heard that someone of a similar stature, well-wrapped in a hat, was seen heading out of the city.
When they reached the city gate and asked, the guards also said they saw him, and they found it strange that someone would run out in the snow; they pointed them in the direction they saw him go.
Upon looking towards that direction, Pei Zongli’s face changed. After the case was closed, he had buried Pei Wenjie ten miles to the west of the city on a mountain. Wenjie was just a child and had not died a good death, so he couldn’t be buried in Old Pei’s family graveyard.
The direction in which Pei Wensheng had gone was precisely towards the west of the city.
A group of people rushed along the way.
By the time they reached the place, it was already dark, and Pei Wensheng was lying on the ground above where Pei Wenjie was buried, eyes closed, unconscious.
Pei Zongli was shaken to the core because several people along the way had seen him and all said he was by himself. But apart from him and the servant Shu Mao, nobody else at home knew the exact location, not even Zhao Liniang, who hadn’t come out. Yet Pei Wensheng had walked to the exact spot on his own and was now sleeping here.
Qian Wanxiu was also stupefied, her vision darkening as she hurried over, "Wensheng! Wensheng!"
When Pei Wensheng awoke and saw he was sleeping on a wild mountain covered in snow, he was immediately terrified and cried out, "Mother! Mother!" He threw himself at Qian Wanxiu and burst into loud sobs.
Qian Wanxiu also embraced him, tears streaming down her face, "We’re going home! We’re going home!"
The few people who had come to search looked at each other, convinced this place was eerily strange and better left quickly, "It’s already dark; let’s hurry on our way!"
Pei Zongli, very clear about the situation, hastily nodded, "Yes, let’s hurry back!"
They had brought torches with them when they came, and these were now all lit.
No sooner had they left than a faint wailing cry of a baby seemed to rise from the wild mountain, frightening the group into quickening their pace.
Fortunately, they had brought mules when they came out; having run so far and in the snow, they were already exhausted. Pei Wensheng couldn’t walk, and nobody could carry him back for more than ten miles, but the mules carried him just fine.
The crying seemed to grow closer, as if it were chasing after them.
No one dared to look back, everyone quickened their pace, terrified.
Qian Wanxiu had come on a mule and still had some strength left, but accustomed to comforts as she was, she couldn’t walk far before she was gasping for breath.
It seemed as though the crying had stopped, growing fainter and farther away.
The group breathed a slight sigh of relief but didn’t dare to relax, hurrying back.
