Chapter 530: Chapter 530 The Man in a Bad Mood (6)_1
The vendor glanced at Zhao Xiaochen.
"I’ll take a pair!" Zhao Xiaochen pulled out his money directly.
The vendor swiftly handed him the lanterns.
Li Baolian, clutching her purse, her face flushing, waited for him to hand her the lanterns, wondering how she could accept them without making him think she was beneath him.
Zhao Xiaochen gave her a somewhat puzzled look and, holding a pair of lanterns, walked away.
The blush on Li Baolian’s face instantly faded, and she turned to watch Zhao Xiaochen.
Zhao Xiaochen was heading towards Pei Yuan and the others.
Li Baolian’s complexion darkened, she was the most outstanding among them, and he was interested in her?!
Pei Qian, pulled along by Pei Yuan, had let Sun Tingyu have the lanterns and was huffing in displeasure until she saw Zhao Xiaochen approaching with the lanterns, which instantly improved her mood. She pulled on Pei Yuan, "Second sister!"
Pei Yuan also saw Zhao Xiaochen, and seeing that he held a pair of lanterns, her face couldn’t help but flush red.
Pei Qian went over with a smile, and unapologetically said to Zhao Xiaochen, "Those two lanterns look nice, give them to me!"
Zhao Xiaochen grinned, "Sure! For you!" and handed the lanterns straight to Pei Qian.
Li Baolian pursed her lips tightly, thinking Pei Qian’s brash nature was unlikable and her looks nothing special; how could this man be interested in her!? And the age difference was simply too great!
Now that the lanterns were given away, Zhao Xiaochen couldn’t keep following her, so after showing his face he went off to browse the stands. Pei Yuan was surrounded by too many people, all half-grown girls.
Sun Tingyu got the lantern she wanted, but when she squeezed out of the crowd, she saw Pei Qian holding a paired one and scoffed, "How old are you, buying such lanterns!?" It’s embarrassing for a little girl to be carrying a paired lantern.
Pei Qian gave her a look, "My brother-in-law gave it to me!"
As Sun Tingyu thought about it, she looked at Pei Yuan, and seeing her flushed cheeks, she suddenly realized that it was from Pei Yuan’s fiancé.
Upon hearing that the man was Pei Yuan’s fiancé, Li Baolian’s face turned red, then white, then black, then green.
"These lanterns are pretty good-looking, let’s buy a pair too and take them back for our eldest sister and brother-in-law!" said Pei Qian, calling for Pei Yuan as they went to browse the vendors.
Around the market, they bought another pair to take home.
Li Baolian then asked Sun Tingyu, "Whose family does Pei Yuan’s fiancé come from?"
"He’s the nephew of Landlord Zhao of the town, I heard he works at the guard station, and their family seems to be the Zhao family of Qinghe Town!" Sun Tingyu disliked such vulgar soldiers.
"The Zhao family of Qinghe Town..." Li Baolian remembered, a very wealthy household her mother had once inquired about; unexpectedly, they were engaged to Pei Yuan. She just wanted to marry into the Fang family to secure Fang Liuming’s future, but the Fang family did not think highly of her.
Pei Yuan herself had not expected Zhao Xiaochen to come over, and on her way home, she saw him waiting under an elm tree. Pei Qian pushed her to go and talk to him, but she really didn’t know what to say.
Zhao Xiaochen noticed her little face illuminated by the lantern light, blushing bright red, knew she was shy, and came over to hand her a box, "I bought this at the temple fair to give to you!"
Pei Yuan didn’t say anything, but accepted it with a red face.
As others were arriving home, Zhao Xiaochen glanced at the gate, looking towards Pei Yuan.
Seeing she didn’t invite him to sit inside, Pei Qian spoke up for her, "... There’s still some dumplings left at home!"
"I’m feeling a bit cold, I could use some hot soup!" Zhao Xiaochen smiled and replied.
The group headed inside, Pei Wendong, and Chang Yonglin had already returned.
Zhao Xiaochen took out a couple of small toys from his pocket for them to play with.
Pei Yuan and Pei Qian went to the kitchen to cook the dumplings and brought them out.
"Where are the eldest sister and brother-in-law? Do they want some more soup to eat?" Pei Yuan asked.
"I’ll go check," said Pei Qian, grabbing the lanterns they bought and hurried to the second gate, only to see it tightly closed. She opened the door and discovered the lights out in the room, with just the lanterns in the corridor still lit, which puzzled her.
Zhang Gengshan came over with a smile, "Third Miss! The master and young mistress have already retired for the night."
"Oh! Then you keep these lanterns for my sister," Pei Qian handed him the lanterns and returned to the front courtyard. Surprised that her older sister had gone to sleep before they arrived back from their outing. So early!?
Zhang Gengshan put away the lanterns and locked the second gate.
Pei Qin and Mo Heng had already gone to bed, so Zhao Xiaochen couldn’t stay long, drank a bowl of soup, and had to take his leave.
The next day, the younger ones rose early as usual, but there was no noise from the back courtyard.
Pei Qin could barely keep her eyes open and didn’t want to get up. She found it hard to deal with men who were sexually frustrated and covertly lascivious! If she didn’t have to consider the fact that she was pregnant with Little Radish, she might have been "killed" by softness.
Mo Heng instructed Zhang Gengshan to bring breakfast to the room, "I’ll massage your legs after you eat, then you can sleep some more."
Pei Qin gave him a sideways glance.
Thinking she wasn’t feeling well, Pei Qian and others came over after breakfast to check on her. This made Pei Qin blush embarrassedly, having to claim it was the dumplings from the night before that didn’t sit well with her.
But Pei Wendong noticed carefully that Mo Heng’s mouth was upturned all along, so his bad mood from the past few days had been real, huh! After the fifteenth, he was in a good mood again!?
Seeing that Pei Qin really hadn’t eaten much, they told her to rest well and returned to the front courtyard, careful not to disturb her anymore.
Li Baolian came looking for Pei Qin, as school was starting today and Fang Liuming should be returning. She was leaving in the afternoon, yet the gift intended for Fang Liuming still hadn’t been delivered. Although she could have her brother take it, she preferred to deliver it herself.
Hearing that Pei Qin wasn’t feeling well, she insisted on seeing her, "If she’s asleep, I’ll come back later. I didn’t see her at all yesterday, and I’m really worried. I just want to take a look!"
"She’s not feeling well and has already rested," Mo Heng said while carrying a bowl of peeled almonds.
Li Baolian looked up at him and instantly drew a breath, holding it in, her eyes wide open, filled with amazement and shock. This... this was Pei Qin’s husband!? He was so incredibly handsome, as beautiful as a deity! So handsome, so good-looking! And emanating such an air of nobility!
After Mo Heng spoke coldly, he headed straight to the kitchen with the almonds.
Li Baolian took a couple of steps forward, her gaze fixed, unable to look away.
