Chapter 509: Chapter 509: Quickly Falling Out and Getting Divorced (4)_1
Those with a kinder view would disagree, arguing that Mo Heng had already proposed to Pei Qin before rescuing her, and even seemed to have been rejected.
Shen Songming arrived with his entourage and saw Pei Qin and the others busily tidying up, with Mo Heng helping out as well. He sneered, "Well! Weren’t you the one weak and nearly dying? The marriage was rushed, and after a few days of hard work, you’re suddenly full of vigor?"
"Joy rejuvenates the spirit," Mo Heng looked up at him.
Caught off guard, Shen Songming gave a snort of laughter, "Still rejuvenated, huh? If you listened to what everybody outside is saying, you wouldn’t feel so sprightly!"
"They’re saying I’m a pretty boy kept by Qinqin," Mo Heng responded.
"Quite self-aware!" Shen Songming nodded. It had only been a few days since the marriage, and he was already so endearingly sweet!
"Who’s been talking?" Pei Qin stepped out, displeased.
Shen Songming gave her a dismissive glance, "Everyone is talking!" She had always despised useless pretty boys, but this one was not useless, so he somehow managed to find favor in her eyes.
Pei Qin retorted, "That’s not true!" It wasn’t as if she was keeping a pretty boy; she had practically fallen into his trap. This guy didn’t look as poor as he seemed, otherwise, where did he get the silver to acquire all those things and properties? She had silver of her own, and yet she had provided for him for two years...
Mo Heng watched her, a slight smile on his face.
Shen Songming watched and huffed, turning to enter the house and calling out to Pei Qin, "Make me some tea!"
"I’m busy!" Pei Qin shouted back from across the courtyard.
"You better not forget your promise to me! A month’s worth, remember!" Shen Songming reminded.
Mo Heng looked at Pei Qin with a questioning glance.
Pei Qin rolled her eyes toward the roof, added some charcoal to the stove, and started boiling water for tea. Glancing up and seeing Mo Heng looking at her, she explained, "I promised to serve as a maid for a month..."
Mo Heng’s handsome face darkened instantly—Shen Songming was taking revenge. He got up and went to the hall.
Shen Songming slightly raised his eyelids, "I don’t have your vile thoughts! It’s just our family having some fun!" You’re the outsider! We are relatives who have been praised for over a century!
Mo Heng thought about the eerie facts he had uncovered. After a severe illness, Shen Songming’s personality changed. He abandoned the literary path for commerce, traveling all the way from Jinan Prefecture to Yuanyang County to find Pei Qin, and the two quickly became as close as confidants. Pei Qin’s change started after tumbling down a mountain and being forced into marriage as a stepmother, causing her temperament to become violent and shrewd.
He dared not think further about it. The topic of gods and spirits was something he shouldn’t believe in, yet Shen Songming kept insisting that he was Pei Qin’s maternal relative, her closest kin, and the relationship between the two was extraordinary. Could two unrelated individuals take to each other at first sight, transcend friendships and confidant levels, even surpass lovers? Could it be that they... knew each other from before? From the same place?
"Why are you looking at me like that? You think I’m really as despicable and vile as you are?" Shen Songming scoffed.
Mo Heng gave him a deep look before turning and heading back to the kitchen.
Shen Songming, frowning and irritably ruffling his hair, muttered, "With such a dull and stoic disposition, and a face that shows no emotion, a so-called pretty boy, what on earth does Pei Qin see in him!? If it’s just for his looks, knowing her tendency for novelty, they won’t even need seven years to itch— they’ll be breaking up and divorcing soon!"
Shuang Xi, with her head bowed, wondered if she should go and help as well. Ms. Pei had just gotten married; it was her first day as a bride, and yet the young master was already cursing them to split up early—it was really...
Shen Songming, lost in his thoughts, nodded along until Pei Qin brought over the tea.
At lunch, Shen Songming took an extra seat at the table, brazenly sitting right next to Pei Qin and earnestly serving her vegetables, "Your appetite hasn’t been good these past days. When you can eat, you must eat more. Take in vitamins, nutrients, protein! Otherwise, how will you nourish the baby’s development?"
