Chapter 427: Chapter 427 Grim Reaper Comes to Claim Lives (5)_1
"What kind of cold noodle dish?" Pei Qin perked up at the mention of food, especially something chilled, and immediately asked.
Sun Xiujin’s face lit up, her smile somewhat embarrassed, "It’s a sour and spicy cold noodle dish sold by an old lady with a stall on the street. We tried making it at home but it didn’t taste as good. I’m inviting you to try it, come with me, okay?" She covered her mouth with her hand, giggling, "If one bowl isn’t enough, I’ll buy you two."
Pei Qin rarely went to the west side of town, just passing by on her way to the county seat; she really hadn’t noticed any cold noodle stalls at night, "I’ve been cooped up for so long, going out for some cold noodles doesn’t sound bad!" she said, glancing at the sweet potato and cabbage stalks in her hands.
Sun Xiujin glanced at Lu Hai, "Let Lu Hai take the stuff back for us!"
Lu Hai gave Sun Xiujin an indifferent look.
Pei Qin handed the stuff to Lu Hai to bring home; she wanted to see what these cold noodles were like and if they were any good.
Sun Xiujin led the way, and the two of them walked through the main street to the corner of the west end of town, where they ordered two bowls at the cold noodle stall.
Pei Qin took a taste first and found them refreshingly smooth, sour, and spicy.
Sun Xiujin had Grandma Kong add extra vinegar to hers, and she watched Pei Qin eat with an embarrassed smile.
Pei Qin raised an eyebrow, "Pregnant?"
"...I’m not sure yet. All I want now is something sour, something spicy," Sun Xiujin’s smile was full of sweet bliss.
Cravings during pregnancy could be very strange. She had heard that her own mother craved sour foods while pregnant with her, and no matter how much she ate, Pei Qin still turned out to be a girl. Pei Qin found herself missing her parents.
Sun Xiujin, seeing that Pei Qin was eating quickly, ordered her another bowl.
After polishing off two bowls of cold noodles, Pei Qin reached for money but realized she hadn’t brought any. When selling goods at the stall or dining with other girls, Pei Qin always insisted on paying.
Sun Xiujin chuckled, "I told you this one is on me today. You can treat me next time!"
"Alright!" Pei Qin agreed cheerfully. After Sun Xiujin paid, Pei Qin walked her home before heading to her own place.
Mo Heng stood at the entrance of the alley.
Lost in thought, Pei Qin looked up and got startled upon seeing him standing there, cloaked in darkness, "Damn! Coming out all in black at night, don’t you know you look just like the Grim Reaper?!"
"It’s not completely dark yet," Mo Heng stepped forward.
Pei Qin gave him a sideways glance, "Next time you stand around, choose a better spot. At night like this, you really freak me out, looking like the Grim Reaper coming to collect!"
Mo Heng offered a slight smile, "Are you afraid of being ’collected’?"
"I don’t want to die yet!" Pei Qin said, walking straight toward Liu’er Alley.
Seeing he wasn’t following, she looked back, "You have something to do? Or do you want to have dinner at my place again?"
Mo Heng caught up with her.
Pei Qin didn’t say a word and walked ahead.
Several of the little Radishes at home had already started dinner. Seeing her return, Pei Yuan hurried to serve her rice, "Just a bowl of cold noodles definitely isn’t filling!"
"There’s another one following. Serve two portions," Pei Qin said as she went straight to wash her hands and face.
When Pei Yuan spotted Mo Heng joining, she dished out all the remaining food.
After thanking her, Mo Heng joined Pei Qin for dinner.
Pei Qin was puzzled, "I thought you were getting ready to leave? You’ve been preparing for half a year now. Are you planning to put it off until next year?"
"Hmm," Mo Heng responded.
Pei Qin barely restrained a twitch in her lips, telling him to hurry up and finish his meal, then get going.
Mo Heng obeyed, finishing quickly and taking his leave.
"Really just came here for a meal?" Pei Qin said incredulously.
Lu Hai felt that Mo Heng had come to show his face to Pei Qin with the intention of hooking up with her. Although handsome, Lu Hai still thought Shen Songming was more reliable.
Mo Heng wanted to take Pei Qin to the county town, but seeing that she was not in good spirits, he refrained from mentioning it.
The next day, Pei Qin received a letter from Shen Songming, asking her to help receive a shipment of goods, as he was planning to set up a shop in Yuanyang County.
Shen Songming had mentioned the shop before.
After reading the pinyin signature on the letter, Pei Qin took some silver and went out with Lu Hai. They decided to check the situation first.
When Sun Xiujin came looking for Pei Qin and heard she had gone to the county town, his heart thumped with fear. Could it be that Zhang Shiqian and Pei Wenli had tricked Pei Qin into going out!?
Zhang Shiqian and Zhao Junchao were delighted to see Pei Qin coming out and even to Yuanyang County. They immediately planned to devise a strategy to keep Pei Qin in the county town.
Pei Qin found an inn to stay in.
She waited until evening before the caravan’s cargo arrived at the rear.
After inspecting the several large locked chests, Pei Qin rolled her eyes and had someone help carry them into the inn’s room.
It was very late by the time she finished. Sweaty from the heat, Pei Qin casually washed up, drank a large bowl of tea, and lay down to sleep.
Lu Hai was not as carefree as her; eyeing the large chests, she just closed her eyes to rest. She was worried that the chests, likely containing things like clocks and musical boxes, might attract the attention of others who didn’t know their contents and might harbor ill intentions.
The large chests were indeed conspicuous. Just as Pei Qin had gone to bed, someone stealthily visited their inn.
Lu Hai immediately got up and urged Pei Qin to do the same.
Only then did she realize that Pei Qin’s body was burning up and her breathing was abnormal. She quickly pulled her up.
Upon waking, Pei Qin quickly realized that something was wrong with her body.
Lu Hai immediately led her away, leaving the chests and their contents behind.
No sooner had they left the inn than they were surrounded by a group of people dressed in black.
Lu Hai pressed a dagger into Pei Qin’s hand and, holding the Soft Sword tightly, protected her closely.
The attackers, radiating murderous intent, made a beeline for Pei Qin’s life.
Feng Wei, who had heard the sound of the fight from afar, hastily turned the corner with his vehicle.
"Stop the carriage!" Mo Heng called out for a halt.
"Young Master! Better to avoid trouble than get involved," Feng Wei whispered in a low voice. The young master had never been one to meddle before.
When Mo Heng heard Pei Qin’s voice amongst many women’s, swearing unabashedly, he listened more closely. His expression changed, "Feng Wei! Go save them, quick!"
Feng Wei frowned but, as always, he followed instructions. Drawing the long sword from beneath the carriage seat, he stepped forward to help, but froze upon seeing the two people in the middle.
Lu Hai also paused for a moment, then, disregarding her injured shoulder, charged out, tossing Pei Qin over to him.
Feng Wei caught her and immediately noticed something was wrong with her.
As three more people in black rushed forward, Feng Wei hurriedly defended against them.
Mo Heng quickly approached and grabbed hold of Pei Qin, frowning instantly, "Pei Qin!?"
When someone attacked Mo Heng, Feng Wei immediately blocked them.
Mo Heng glanced at the few people dressed in black entangled with Lu Hai and Feng Wei, all of them martial arts experts. He wrapped his arm around Pei Qin and quickly left the scene.
