Chapter 299: Chapter 299: Experiencing the Dungeon (9)_1
Pei Qin glanced at him, "Three months."
"Wasn’t it said to be a year?" Mo Heng asked again.
"Can’t I speed up the process?" Pei Qin raised an eyebrow.
Mo Heng nodded, "Sure."
Pei Yuan whispered, "He hasn’t been to our house to ask for food for a long time."
"Of course! It’s too far away! Even a dog’s nose couldn’t sniff it out!" Pei Qin nodded.
Mo Heng reached out to feel the labels attached to each jar and indeed found that they bore the same markings as those on Pei Wendong’s miscellaneous notes, "These symbols, are they numbers?"
Pei Qin widened her eyes with surprise and firmly denied it, "What numbers? Those are just drawn symbols!" This blind man – he’s supposed to be unable to see, yet by touching he could guess they are numbers?
He had never seen such symbols before; Mo Heng looked at them closely, "Could you teach me?"
Pei Yuan and Pei Qian both looked at Pei Qin. They still didn’t know the name of this blind man, only that his servant guard was called Feng Wei. He had figured it out just by touching, could he really be that incredible?
Without hearing a response from her, Mo Heng said again, "I’ve seen... a multiplication table."
"Damn! Where the hell did you get that from!?" Pei Qin was very certain he was not one of her own kind. If he knew the multiplication table, then he could only have learned it from the two little radishes, Pei Wendong and Chang Yonglin.
"Could you teach me?" Mo Heng asked again.
Pei Qin’s face darkened a bit, "No!"
Mo Heng hung his head and did not ask again.
Feng Wei was even more indignant when he found out. For his master to teach as a teacher was something many sought but could not obtain! His master did not charge a fee for teaching them. He merely asked her about a table, and she was unwilling to explain! His master had staked all he had for his comeback on saving her, and this Pei Qin, she truly lacked conscience!
Mo Heng memorized all the number symbols on the sauce jars, lined them up, and compared them to one, two, three, four, five.
When Pei Qin came back to check on the sauce, she saw that he had already figured out the patterns of Arabic numerals, and by observing, he could even recite the multiplication table by heart.
"Find me something to do, please!" Mo Heng could no longer go and ask for food, he could live quietly by himself, but he really wanted to find something to do to distract himself from the raging hate and malice in his heart.
Pei Qin gritted her teeth and taught him the multiplication table.
Mo Heng learned quickly, and soon he came up with the corresponding division table, eager to see if her method was simpler and more convenient than what he had learned.
Pei Qin stopped teaching and found him something to do, "If you have nothing else to do, write a dictionary! Take characters with the same radicals and decompose them, systematize them, and compile a dictionary."
"’Analytical Dictionary of Characters’?" Mo Heng looked up, staring earnestly ’at’ her.
Pei Qin resigned herself to teaching him how to decompose characters.
"Why don’t you make one yourself?" Mo Heng asked her.
"Do I look like I have nothing better to do?!" Pei Qin rolled her eyes at him.
He looked like he had nothing better to do.
Mo Heng nodded slightly and threw himself into the major task of decomposing characters and compiling a dictionary.
Pei Qin thought she had finally found him something to do, but she didn’t expect that he would have even more questions. Almost every other day, there were issues that Pei Wendong and Chang Yonglin had to bring back, asking her to resolve their confusion. This made Pei Qin feel as though she hadn’t found something to keep him busy, but rather she had given herself an additional task.
As November progressed, the weather turned colder and colder, dry and chill without a hint of snow or a drop of rain.
Pei Qin donned a thick cotton-padded jacket, took some spicy pickled cabbage and soy oil, along with candied peanuts and drunkard’s peanuts, and delivered them to the county town.
Having ground the beans for tofu, it never occurred to her that soybeans could also be pressed for oil. Though not as good as peanut or rapeseed oil, the dishes cooked with it were still very fragrant, and it was cheaper than both peanut and rapeseed oil. The Store Manager of Moon Restaurant was very pleased and promptly decided to buy the soy oil Pei Qin had brought.
He wasn’t too keen on the spicy pickled cabbage, though; the cabbages were abundant and cheap at the moment, so people could cook them however they wanted.
Pei Qin left him a small jar and took the rest to the Drunken Immortal Tavern.
Drunken Immortal Tavern had just started selling dishes with bamboo shoots this year. After trying the spicy pickled cabbage and realizing they could sell an additional dish until spring vegetables came to market next year, they signed an agreement with Pei Qin for the spicy pickled cabbage.
After selling her goods, Pei Qin delivered some to the Wang family and Landlord Chang’s house. Wu Dongsi also received a portion. Then she bought a pile of meat and bones and returned home.
Spicy cabbage with pork belly, spicy cabbage with tofu. The aroma made Sun Xiujin, who had come to bring garlic sprouts, sneeze continuously.
Pei Qian snorted inwardly as she looked at the bunch of garlic sprouts. Coming back from the Yamen, Sun Lizheng must have said something, and Sun Xiujin had been visiting their home even more frequently.
Pei Qin gave Sun Xiujin a bunch of spicy pickled cabbage to take back and cook, "It’s delicious with pork belly and in stewed tofu soup! You can also stir-fry it with rice cakes, even more delicious!"
Speaking of rice cakes, Sun Xiujin’s expression stiffened, and her gaze turned colder. They knew that Young Master Shen was the son of the Jinan Magistrate, so she clung to him tightly and even stepped on Pei Qin, waiting to see her become a laughingstock.
Pei Qin was merely telling her how to eat the spicy pickled cabbage, mentioning the rice cakes because she thought Sun Xiujin liked them.
After chopping the garlic sprouts, Pei Qin wrapped up some garlic egg dumplings for the little radishes. Reluctantly after dinner, she packed a portion and took it to Mo Heng.
Upon arriving at the place, she saw a man at the foot of a slope, kneeling and clinging to Mo Heng’s legs, crying bitterly, "Young master! Your servant has been looking for you for a year, a whole year!"
