Chapter 258: Chapter 258 The Eldest Sister is so Capricious (4)_1

"I’ve got something for you to make!" Pei Qin said with a smile.

"What is it? I can finish shelling the corn in one more day, then I can get started on your task!" Zou Xing replied eagerly.

"No rush. It’s a corn sheller, a threshing machine. Just have it ready to sell when the corn is dried out!" Pei Qin took out the blueprints.

Zou Xing came over to look and listened to her explanation.

Once Old Man Zou and Zou Fu, among others, came over and called Pei Qin into their home, they all agreed it was a good idea after hearing about the hand-cranked threshing machine. Zoufu’s wife praised Pei Qin for her intelligence; she had thought of the screw press before, and now she had refined it into a hand-cranked separating machine.

Since she was there to bring them business, Grandma Zou quickly told her eldest daughter-in-law to prepare a chicken for cooking.

Pei Qin told them not to fuss, as she wasn’t going to stay for the meal; she just wanted to give them a heads-up, "I still have things to do at home, I need to get back and busy myself!"

Grandma Zou tried to persuade her to stay, insisting strongly.

Pei Qin declined, saying they should just get ready and that they could come to town and ask her for the details when it was time to start. She then bid farewell to Sun Tiezhu.

Zou Xing accompanied them all the way out of the village.

Grandma Zou felt a mixture of affection and regret, chiding Old Man Zou, "It’s all your fault for not agreeing in the first place! If Er Lang were willing, we could have had such a good daughter-in-law!"

Old Man Zou was also full of regret, but how could he have known then that Lady Fang had been wronged by Old Pei’s House, and that the Fang family only found out later? After Lady Fang’s death, he didn’t object anymore, but it was too late by the time the girl was no longer willing, "It’s fate, and there’s no use talking about it!" He could only lament the missed connection.

Grandma Zou felt a pang in her heart, seeing how neat and capable Pei Qin was. Seeing her youngest son’s longing look made her heart ache all the more. She wished she could embrace Pei Qin and never let her go.

Zou Xing watched the donkey cart disappear into the distance before returning home somewhat despondently.

Seeing his youngest son’s demeanor, Old Man Zou decided that he would definitely arrange a marriage for him this year and get him a new bride by the new year! Better to cut off his hopes sooner rather than letting him pine away day after day.

After sending Pei Qin back, Sun Tiezhu returned home and told Grandma Sun and Lady Zou about the events. Lady Zou also blamed her father. Even her mother had no objections, but her father was obstinate and interfered. Such a good girl, and now someone else would benefit.

While one side expressed their regret, the Feng family was not reconciled.

Meanwhile, Pei Qin turned her attention back to the workshop. When the noodle shop wasn’t busy, she would be busy writing and sketching on paper.

Pei Yuan and Pei Qian thought she was planning to build the workshop to store sweet potatoes.

Before the beans in the yard were even threshed, Pei Qin had them gathered up a bushel for her use and bought a jar. She took the soybeans to Sun Tiezhu’s house, extracted the oil from them, purchased wheat bran, peanut meal, and also white flour. She soaked and steamed the mix, and prepared rice koji mold, experimenting with making soy sauce culture.

Mo Heng sniffed the strange smell of her concoction, "What are you making?"

"Soy sauce!" replied Pei Qin, not lifting her head as she put the culture into the jar with salt water to ferment.

"What kind of oil is that?" Mo Heng asked again. She was always making unheard-of odd things to eat and use.

"You’ll see for yourself when you’re not blind!" Pei Qin said good-naturedly.

Mo Heng didn’t speak.

Pei Qin glanced up at him, noting the silent figure standing in the sunlight, radiating an air of lonesome chill. She rolled her eyes at him, "It’s black, salty, you drizzle it on meat or vegetables, and it turns the meat sauce-red!"

As if realizing her explanation came after a pause and a roll of her eyes, Mo Heng cracked a slight smile, "When will it be ready to eat?"
