Chapter 250: Chapter 250: Do You Think I Can Ascend to the Heavens? (5)_1
Lady Zhu also felt uplifted, wearing silk clothes and feeling herself the matron of the family.
Lady Chen had also changed into a silken dress, but her heart was far from joyous. The sources of the silk in the shop were from the Qian family, and the shop had been started with Qian Wanxiu’s dowry. It didn’t even count as belonging to the second branch of the family, let alone their main branch! That damned old woman had been completely taken in by Lady Qian, her heart leaning all towards the second branch, her eyes seeing only Dalang who was still studying, and no one else from their main branch! They didn’t realize that the silk shop was just for show, in actuality owned by others, and even if it made money, they couldn’t spend it!
But the villagers all envied them; their family’s blue brick and tile house stood strong, also splendid enough to last another ten or twenty years without issues. Now Pei Zongli had renovated and enlarged their courtyard, making it even more imposing.
However, that did not stop the villagers from envying Sister Peiqin and her siblings even more. They had long since built a new residence in town, acquired a donkey cart, Pei Wendong was constantly praised at school, and the young master from Chang’s house had even moved into their home and opened a noodle shop. Although it couldn’t compare with Pei Zongli and Qian Wanxiu’s silk shop, it was far superior to those who were still toiling away in the fields!
So, when the siblings came down from the mountain, people greeted them.
Pei Qin smiled lightly and nodded, leading the three little radishes back home.
On the way, they casually checked on the beans in the field, which were almost yellow. In no more than half a month, the beans could be harvested. After harvesting the beans, they could dig up the sweet potatoes and plant the second crop.
Pei Qin walked to the middle of the field, pulled up several bean plants, and took them home to boil some spiced edamame.
The edamame had just come off the stove, a bit too hot to eat, when Mo Heng arrived.
Pei Qian had no idea what to say anymore. Her eldest sister could turn anything she saw into food. And whenever their household cooked up something rare to eat, this blind man could always smell it out and find his way to their home for a free meal.
Mo Heng groped his way to the table and sat down, listening to Pei Qin speak and eating the spiced edamame. His heart, seething with rancor, slowly calmed down.
Pei Qin glanced at him. His complexion, which had improved since she had first seen him, made his delicate, flawless face even more striking against his black clothes. He sat quietly at the table, eating the edamame, a vision of beauty, as though he were a scene from a painting. She clicked her tongue twice; indeed, it was often the most beautiful things that had to be marred to achieve perfection. Hence, the heavens gave him a handsome face, but took away his sight in exchange.
Perceiving her gaze as though she were watching him, Mo Heng stopped what he was doing. "I want to read books; do you have any way to help?" he asked.
Pei Qin’s face darkened, "Why the hell should it matter to me that you want to read books? Why should I have a way!?" She spoke with the air of someone being harassed over a debt she herself owed.
"I think, you have a way," stated Mo Heng, ’looking’ in her direction, his beautiful eyes clouded and dim.
"Bullshit! You think I can go to heaven too!" Pei Qin would have hit him if it weren’t for his blindness.
"Mm." Mo Heng responded softly, a faint sound coming from his nose, sounding somewhat numb to the ear.
Pei Qin didn’t want to see him anymore, "Pei Wendong! Take him back!"
Pei Wendong stood up and approached Mo Heng.
Mo Heng got up on his own and walked a few steps toward the door, then stopped. "Find me some work to do too!" he insisted. He truly needed something to occupy himself; merely teaching Pei Wendong was not enough.
Pei Qin rolled her eyes and ignored him.
Without hearing her respond, Mo Heng just stood there without leaving.
After a while, Pei Qin turned her head and cursed, "The debtor always acts like the damn lord of the manor!"
As if sensing her disdainful and angry gaze upon him, Mo Heng listened quietly to her curses, waiting for her to speak.
