Lady Zhu clenched her teeth in vexation, wishing she could tear the girl’s mouth apart. She found these servant girls annoying to begin with, yet Si Ya had a sweet tongue and knew how to flatter. But who would’ve thought this despicable girl could turn her back faster than flipping a book?

"You’ve misunderstood! I just wanted to help out, Qinqin!" Pei Zongli explained in a helpless and gentle voice.

"Help out? Where was this help when my mother died? When we were kicked out into the freezing cold? When we were short of silver to build our house? Now that you hear we’re buying land, you ’kindly’ offer to help!? Pah! It’s clear you just want to take our family’s land! The shamelessness!" Pei Qian spat at him fiercely, flaunting the new words she had learned not long ago.

Her scolding was loud and soon attracted onlookers.

Seeing the growing crowd and Pei Qian’s determination to recount their issues, Pei Zongli started to contemplate leaving. Even if they bought the land, they wouldn’t register it in his name; the Fang family had official status and could avoid paying grain taxes if they did, while his mother was simply venting her frustration by picking a fight here, oblivious to the fact that dragging him into it would only humiliate herself.

Lady Zhu’s face was green with rage.

"I thought holding it in for so long, you’d actually have something substantial to show, but it turns out it was just gas! The weather’s hot, and I’m already in a foul mood, and here you are, amusing me with your visit!" Pei Qin struggled to contain her laughter. "With your bizarre logic, remember to bring your brains next time you step out, or take your medicine beforehand!"

"You dare say I’m out of my mind!?" Lady Zhu fumed ferociously, her eyes blazing.

"I wouldn’t have known if you hadn’t made it so blatantly obvious," Pei Qin chuckled. Then she instructed Pei Yuan to open the door, hurrying the donkey cart home.

Lady Zhu trembled with fury, her face an ashen blue.

Pei Zongli, embarrassed by the strange looks from the onlookers, urged Lady Zhu to leave.

Unwilling to give up, Lady Zhu retorted, "You think by buying a house and registering it in the Fang family’s name, and planning to do the same with the land, you can rest easy!? Nobody from the Fang family is any good; sooner or later, they’ll devour your house and land! You’ll see! They just put on a good show; not a single good one among them! You’ll eventually take a fall, suffer a huge loss, and die of regret!"

Pei Qin rolled her eyes, drove the donkey cart into the yard, tied the donkey in the stable, left the cart against the wall covered with a tarpaulin, and went in to drink some water.

Lady Zou was about to visit with her melon and son in tow when she unexpectedly encountered Lady Zhu and Pei Zongli.

Seeing Xiao Xingwang, Pei Qin clapped her hands at the little fellow.

The little one, Happy, stretched out his tiny hands and bounced in Lady Zou’s arms, drooling with laughter.

Pei Qin came over to take Happy in her arms.

Each time Pei Yuan and the others watched her hold Xiao Xingwang, it looked awkward, clearly not accustomed to holding a baby. Yet Xiao Xingwang seemed quite content in her arms, quiet and not fussing, unlike when others held him, who were guaranteed to make him cry before long.

Lady Zou handed the melon to Pei Yuan, suggesting she wash it for them to eat. She turned to Pei Qian and asked, "What were they here for?"

Pei Qian, still looking displeased, snorted, "They heard we were buying land and came over to have us put it in their names!"

Lady Zou immediately frowned, finding the Pei family’s audacity quite shameless. "Fortunately, the land is registered in Young Master Shen’s name, and it’s already been purchased. Even if they want to cause trouble, they’ll be powerless!" she remarked.

Unable to help herself, Pei Qian snorted again, "Those shameless people still don’t know better, wanting to create a fuss!

"If they find out the land belongs to someone else and they truly make a scene, they’ll only be embarrassing themselves," Lady Zou said with a laugh.

Pei Yuan brought over the washed and sliced melon, inviting Lady Zou to join them.
