Chapter 223: Chapter 223 You Casanova (5)_1
The Pei siblings were also excited and thrilled beyond measure, looking over the silver note again and again.
"Alright, off to bed early! We won’t be setting up a stall tomorrow, but we’ve got even more to do." Pei Qin put away the silver note and watered the slightly sprouted sweet potatoes twice.
The next morning, Pei Wendong took the zongzi and had just gone to find Feng Wei when, not much later, as dawn was breaking, Shen Songming got up and swaggered over to knock on the door.
Pei Qin, who hadn’t slept well the night before, yawned as she got up.
Seeing her expressionless and sleepy face, the spirited Shen Songming felt a sudden pang of worry. She wouldn’t have a temper when she woke up, would she? Her waking temper wouldn’t involve hitting people, right? Was he again walking right into a beating?
Pei Qin let him into the house and sit down, then emerged from the outhouse, washed her face, got ready, and finally looked energized.
Only then did Shen Songming breathe a sigh of relief.
Pei Yuan and Pei Qian quickly went to the kitchen to prepare breakfast, even asking him if he had eaten.
"I came over here as soon as I woke up, didn’t eat anything." Shen Songming frankly intended to scrounge a meal; despite Pei Qin being formidable in a fight, her cooking skills were impressive too. Once in a while, she’d take her little car to set up a stall, drawing crowds of girls and even some shouting ’husband’ at her. Whatever she sold at her stall, they would buy. Previously, some people were unconvinced until he followed and tried the scalding buns and bean skin pancakes, which turned out to be quite tasty, not just hyped by those girls.
Pei Qin washed her hands, scalded the dough, finely chopped the fried crumbs, mixed them with chives, and made hot dough buns with chive and fried crumb filling.
As Shen Songming smelled the aroma, he was glad he came. During the meal, he took a whole plate for himself.
Pei Qin did not have her fill.
Shen Songming thought she was just a teenage girl who, despite needing energy for fighting and working, wouldn’t eat much, so after finishing one plate of hot dough buns, he snatched two more from the bamboo basket. Each time he noticed her glancing over a few times with a somewhat incomprehensible look, he wondered if she resented him for scrounging a meal after he had just given her five hundred taels of silver, possibly thinking of beating him up?
Pei Yuan noticed her elder sister didn’t eat enough and brought over some pastries.
Shen Songming was momentarily stunned, face reddening, and silently criticized Pei Qin. He didn’t know she could eat that much and assumed the two buns were left uneaten. And yet, after eating so much, she didn’t put on a single ounce of weight!
Since Pei Qin didn’t like sweets, she forced down two pastries and then left to find Taiping Town’s Lizheng, delivering some zongzi to inquire about buying land. Then she packed some salted duck eggs and zongzi, led Pei Yuan to Fang Family Village and Feng Family Estate, also checking if the Fang family’s sour bamboo shoots were done yet.
"My carriage isn’t being used at the moment, so I might as well offer it for your trip!" Shen Songming offered with a grin.
Using such a carriage would be too conspicuous. Pei Qin opted to rent a donkey cart to deliver the goods instead. On the way back, Grandma Fang packed a bag for them with ten goose eggs, a slab of cured meat from the New Year, and a basket of sour bamboo shoots.
The sour bamboo shoots hadn’t fully picked up flavor yet, and the first batch of brine wasn’t great, but they managed to make them without spoiling too much and would make some money selling them. Fang Li looked at the several large jars and already started to plan, "In the future, we’ll formalize a contract with the restaurant, and directly sell the sour bamboo shoots there! Come winter, when bamboo shoots are in season, we’ll collect more and expand the sour bamboo shoot production!"
Pei Qin smiled. The success of the sour bamboo shoots owed much to Grandma Fang and the Yu mother-and-daughter-in-law; Fang Li really didn’t have much to do with it other than gathering some bamboo shoots.
The Fang family were also about to harvest wheat, so Pei Qin didn’t linger long, bade farewell, and headed for Feng Family Estate.
No one was at the Feng family’s; they were all down in the fields. As the Pei’s returned to Taiping Town, they passed by Feng Shouxing’s land, where everyone was harvesting wheat. Pei Qin left the goods for them.
