Pei Qin nodded to him, took her things, and returned to the small courtyard.
Seeing that she had indeed come back, Pei Wendong breathed a sigh of relief, hurriedly came out to open the door, and welcomed her in.
Placing the items on the kang, Pei Qin sorted out the papers, putting the torn corners in one pile and the ones split in the middle in another. Once everything was arranged, she took a pair of scissors and sat at the small table to cut paper.
San Ya wanted to come over to help.
"Stand still!" Pei Qin commanded sternly.
San Ya remembered what she had said the day before, asking them to think carefully about their life plans and set a goal. She retracted her hand and stood still.
Si Ya and Pei Wendong automatically stood still as well.
"Talk about your own life plans and what you intend to do in the future! Set a goal, and let’s get started!" Pei Qin glanced at the three and continued cutting paper.
Si Ya pursed her lips and looked up at San Ya, signaling her to speak first.
"Elder sister! I... Whatever elder sister does, I will be your assistant! We’ll make money together, live a good life, and show those people that, without them, we can still live well!" San Ya’s eyes reddened as she spoke.
"That’s a given; no need to mention it. Talk about your plan and goal!" Pei Qin’s own life had been planned countless times by Aunty Pei, always ending in resignation. So, in the end, Pei Qin still grew up in a way she preferred. She didn’t want to set out a path for San Ya and the others to follow, based on her own thinking.
San Ya was stunned. Her goal was to live a good life and to make those who had driven their mother to death pay!
"You need to think about what kind of person you want to become in the future, plan accordingly and set a goal!" Pei Qin finished cutting a stack of paper and set it aside. She didn’t throw away the scraps but instead put them in a small bamboo basket nearby.
San Ya was at a loss; she didn’t know what kind of person she wanted to become.
Pei Qin told her to think about it and turned her attention to Si Ya.
"I want to earn lots and lots of money!" Si Ya’s lips were tightly sealed. She wanted to earn lots of silver, to be rich like the landlords, to avenge their mother, and to make sure the Pei family couldn’t live well!
"So you want to fall into money’s trap and become a slave to it!?" Pei Qin scoffed and turned to look at Pei Wendong, ignoring her.
Si Ya’s face turned green.
Pei Wendong, somewhat nervous, clenched his fists, "...I... I also want to study!"
Pei Qin nodded, encouraging him to continue.
Seeing that she was not angry, but instead nodding with relaxed eyebrows, Pei Wendong gathered his courage and said with teary eyes, "I want to study and pass examinations to earn a title! I want to be a high-ranking official!" If he became a high-ranking official, those people would have to bow to him, and the Pei family wouldn’t dare to bully them anymore! But he feared his elder sister might disapprove; after all, studying required a lot of silver, and so did passing the exams for an official position.
Pei Qin knew what he was thinking, but telling him now that studying and passing examinations to become an official was for the sake of the people and the world would be beyond his understanding. Having this goal, however, could strengthen his determination to study. After all, many people study and take the civil service exams under the banner of serving the country and the people, but in reality, they do it to become wealthy officials!
Yet among those who study, as many as the carps crossing the river, very few become dragons. Pei Qin thought it over and decided to let him take a different path, to specialize in mathematics. If this path was not suitable for him, she would find someone else to teach him.
As for San Ya, Pei Qin listed several options for her to choose from.
San Ya hesitated for a while before choosing needlework, cooking, and accounting. Since her elder sister didn’t like needlework, she wanted to take on all the sewing and cooking responsibilities for the few of them. She also needed to learn to read and do accounts so that she could help her elder sister more!
Si Ya still wanted to earn a lot of money, but she didn’t know what she could do to make a lot of money. All she knew was that she now needed to learn to read and do accounts.
