Chapter 1021: Chapter 232: General Pei’s Daughter-in-law_4
Suddenly, Fang Liuyang vaulted into the air, his heart leaping to his throat as the wind whistled past his ears. He squinted cautiously downward and tightened his lips in alarm. Was this the incredible lightness of a martial arts master?
Liu Feng and Lu Hai gathered their men and headed back to camp.
Fang Liuyang eyed the woman being carried along, "Why did you bring out General Pei’s wife?"
"Remember to keep your mouth shut later," Lu Hai warned him with a single sentence.
As the people emerged, Pei Qin and Xiao Yong rode over, "Have you retrieved the person?"
When Fang Liuyang and the two men drew closer and saw who it was, his eyes widened in shock, "Co... Cousin..."
As soon as he opened his mouth as if to call out to his cousin, Liu Feng swiftly silenced him by pressing his mute acupoint.
Fang Liuyang was stunned; the General Pei they were talking about... General Pei... Pei... was actually his cousin?
"Keep your mouth shut, or you’ll attract flies and give yourself a meaty experience," Pei Qin covered his mouth for him.
Fang Liuyang was still struggling to grasp the reality that she was indeed his cousin!
Pei Qin approached Ms. Jun to have a look, "Not bad in appearance, bring her back!"
The personal soldiers following couldn’t help but laugh as they excitedly made their way back to camp, as if they had captured some extraordinary prize.
The group galloped back to the main camp, and upon seeing Lu Hai and Liu Feng had already brought the person back, they teased, "General, you’ve brought back your wife?"
"What does General’s fiancée look like? Show us!"
"Whoever dares to impersonate General’s betrothed must be quite attractive; otherwise, she wouldn’t be worthy of our General!"
"A bunch of rascals! All of you shut up!" Pei Qin joked back, dismounting and returning to her tent.
A daring crowd of soldiers gathered, eager to catch a glimpse of General Pei’s fiancée.
Lu Hai carried Ms. Jun into the commander’s tent and tossed her onto a chair, then released her acupoints and stood beside Pei Qin.
Following them inside, Fang Liuyang watched her take the seat of the commander, exuding a dominating and fierce presence. He rubbed his eyes in disbelief; it still felt like a dream.
Jun Suxue moaned softly as she came to, opening her eyes to unfamiliar faces and surroundings, her face turned pale with shock, "Who are you?"
"And who are you? Don’t tell me you don’t recognize our General?" The Deputy General replied sarcastically. As expected of an impostor, she didn’t even recognize their General, her own betrothed.
Jun Suxue assessed Pei Qin, noting her wheatish complexion contrasted with her fine, handsome features and a smile tinged with amusement. Her eyes, dark and fathomless, sent a shiver of alarm through Suxue. Could this be Pei Hansan in person? She quickly regained her composure, "I don’t know you!"
"This is the first time I’ve heard I have a fiancée. I also heard you’ve even been through a marriage ceremony with my spirit tablet; such devotion is as deep as the ocean!" Pei Qin chuckled.
Jun Suxue fixed her gaze on her, feeling her cheeks warm despite herself, and spoke with a defiant lift of her chin, "My husband has been killed!"
"Yes, cursed to death by your own people quite swiftly!" Pei Qin nodded in agreement.
Tears rimmed Jun Suxue’s eyes as she accused, "Why are you impersonating him? He’s already been killed by the Imperial Court, and you still won’t let him rest in peace after his death, exploiting him!" She had never actually seen Pei Hansan in person, only his unflattering portraits. Since she had been deemed his betrothed, she dressed in mourning, clung to his spirit tablet, and even went through the motions of a marriage ceremony before the entire army with just a tablet, effectively a ghost marriage.
"Oh, the tears are coming now," Pei Qin stood up and approached her.
Instinctively, Jun Suxue took a half-step back, "What’s your scheme in kidnapping me?"
"Of course there’s a scheme, but it’s predominantly because you’re so passionately lovestruck, we brought you here to meet your betrothed in person!" Pei Qin scrutinized her; she was nothing but a girl of fifteen or sixteen.
The Deputy General chuckled as well, "Our General here is the genuine Pei Hansan, General Pei! Now that you’ve met the real one, you won’t have to cling to a spirit tablet and spend your nights alone!"
Everyone in the vicinity broke into laughter.
"How dare you!" Jun Suxue exclaimed indignantly, her face flush with shame and anger as she scoped her surroundings—she was a lone woman in the enemy’s camp, her fright paling her complexion.
Pei Qin used the hilt of the sword to lift Jun Suxue’s chin.
Jun Suxue stiffened immediately, unsure whether Pei Hansan was dead or alive, uncertain whether this person was the real deal, but as a woman in the enemy camp, she knew her fate was grim.
Seeing her turn pale, evidently mustering courage to face her end, Pei Qin snorted lightly, "You do have some looks about you, but why get mixed up with rebelling troops by marrying a spirit tablet?"
Biting her lip, Jun Suxue demanded, "What are you planning to do?"
