Chapter 139: Fighting back (5)
"You will drag an innocent woman out of her home so you may get back at me for seeking help?" Warren asked, frustrated that they were not man enough to focus on only him.
Tyrion, Edgar, and the king had so much power, yet they couldn’t go after the man challenging them. They were targeting a woman who didn’t know any of this was occurring.
Kate and Noah both thought Warren was out for work.
"You are seeking help whilst you wear a tailored shirt which costs the same as it would have taken you to find a good doctor. Will you give the excuse that you wanted to blend in with the people here?" Tyrion asked, waiting for the same tired excuse.
It was apparent that Warren had dressed to fit in, but as an outsider, what he didn’t know was that the people here would judge him once they found out whose son he was. Then they would be humoured by the fact that he wanted to dress up to blend in.
Warren didn’t respond.
Warren used the money he rightfully borrowed to get his clothing. That had nothing to do with his mother’s health.
"Duke Collins, I think our time will be wasted if we stand here and speak with this fool. Men like this are better off somewhere cold and hollow. He might need a little help to get there, but something tells me that he’s going to dig his own grave," said Tyrion.
Tyrion was going to make sure that the latter wouldn’t happen, so he would act fast before someone else ended up killing Warren.
"It won’t always be like this," Warren said, awaiting the moment the tables would turn.
With Amelia targeting Penelope, Warren hoped that it would be soon when he would get the last laugh.
Tyrion smiled, not concerned as Warren wanted him to be.
Tyrion walked away since he needed to go back to Penelope’s side.
Edgar followed Tyrion, whilst Tobias was puzzled by the interaction.
Tobias knew who Warren was, but why was there so much tension? He had never heard of Kate and Alessandra having new issues or was he out of the loop?
Tobias followed Edgar and Tyrion. He caught up with them just in time to hear Tyrion say, "He will need to be dealt with soon. He and one other."
Tyrion wasn’t in the mood to deal with Warren for much longer when he had other problems to take care of.
"Since he is mostly troubling the duchess, I will leave it to you. There’s another bastard that Elijah and I must take care of. Now that we are without the women, I want to join your search for the person responsible for the deaths," Tyrion requested.
’"I don’t know what you speak of," Edgar said, lazily looking around the ballroom.
"I am not a fool, Duke Collins. Someone is dressing up women as your wife and killing them. You are not the kind of man to leave finding the culprit to the town guards. You have started your search already. I know it," said Tyrion.
Edgar stopped walking to speak with Tyrion before they reached their wives. "You’ve been spying on me. I wouldn’t do that. You’ll be providing food for the crows to feast on."
"I am careful when spying on anyone. You have your tricks and I have mine. If you don’t allow me to join you, then I will start my search and keep what I learn to myself. I can enjoy my new marriage and help you," Tyrion said.
Tobias stepped up to join the conversation and said, "It would go faster if you two worked together. There is a lot he can learn from you, Edgar. Take him under your wing."
"I already have one rebellious son following me. If you want to be around me, don’t make any mistakes," Edgar said, allowing Tyrion to join him.
"Splendid," Tobias said, placing his arms on both Tyrion and Edgar’s shoulders to pull them closer. "Right, right," he said, removing his hand from Edgar’s shoulder. "Don’t become like him, Tyrion. He’s a bit heartless. Only his wife can get near him."
Tyrion didn’t see an issue with Edgar only allowing for his personal space to be invaded by his wife and children. His father was the same way, but Tobias disliked Edgar being this way since he wanted to get close to Edgar.
"Come to the estate tomorrow and bring Penelope along," said Edgar.
"I wish I could bring her with me, but Penelope plans to visit her grandmother tomorrow. Your mother," Tyrion clarified which grandmother he meant. "I will make my way to the estate alone. Don’t look so disappointed just yet."
"It’s not disappointment, it’s fear," Tobias corrected Tyrion. "Penelope going to Priscilla will make Priscilla more active during the season. She has been enjoying her time alone with her husband, but news of Penelope being troubled will bring her back."
Tobias also expected to hear of his mother clashing with Priscilla.
Priscilla and Tabitha were cordial because their sons were close and Edgar’s father once worked in the court, but they bumped heads a few times. Though she was a former queen, and even when she was queen, Tabitha could not get Priscilla to do as she wanted.
"And that is bad?" Tyrion asked, missing the story behind why Edgar would fear his mother’s return.
"For Edgar, yes. Thankfully, we are no longer in the days when Edgar and Priscilla were at odds for her to end up in the dungeon again. Good luck with her," Tobias said, patting Tyrion’s back.
Tyrion didn’t think luck was needed for him. It was needed for his grandmother.
Tyrion walked with Edagr to return to Penelope’s side.
"You should get rid of Warren soon," Tyrion spoke quickly.
Edgar didn’t respond, but he agreed with Tyrion.
"Did it go well?" Penelope asked, holding onto Tyrion’s hand. "What happened with your fingers? Did you fight?" She asked in a soft tone, inspecting the redness that formed on his knuckles.
"I will tell you about it later. Do you want to dance again?" Tyrion asked, wanting to go back to enjoying themselves.
"You cannot distract me, and no. This ball has been somewhat lovely, but we’ve all agreed that it is nearing time for us to leave. Most of the guests are more interested in watching us than enjoying the ball. When you are ready, I will leave with you," Penelope said.
Penelope had seen enough from this ball. Before something else happened or someone else approached her family, Penelope wanted to return to the comfort of her home.
"I am ready now, but first, we must find Rafael for Rue to leave with him," Tyrion said, searching the room for Rafael. "Wait here with your family. I will prepare our carriage."
"I will do the same," Elijah offered, ready to leave.
