Chapter 81: 81. She wouldn’t do it with him.
She had asked for Riri and Aria told her that the fairy was already drained and sleeping in a room that Barak had prepared for the two of them.
Neriah was surprised when they began to oil her skin over and over, brush and style her hair, help her put on some makeup and even dressed her up in a very weird nightgown which she had refused at first but surrendered after much persuasion from Aria.
Only after Aria told her the words "Don’t worry My princess, you can do this... I hope you have a pleasant and fun-filled night." Only after those words did Neriah’s doors of understanding open.
She had wondered if it was another weird tradition to be overly oiled, and even wear makeup to sleep. But it was just them putting in efforts because this would be her first night in the palace with her dear husband.
What were they thinking was going to happen!!! Now she understood the meaning of the useless nightdress that looked like a net for catching tiny fishes.
Instinct told her she had to change into something else before her dear husband returned, so quickly, she rose from the bed and walked toward the door that shielded a walk-in closet. Her things were there, so Aria had told her.
But then just as she reached the door, the main door to the room opened standing at the entrance was her dear husband. She could see he had washed up and changed somewhere else for his was in a different attire, a black robe that fit his hair color and the stress on his skin seemed to have lifted. It was just a shade fairer.
His eyes instantly raked her body head to toe and her hands quickly flew up to cover what she could.
She was too late. She should have realized sooner and resisted this foolish outfit even more vehemently. Oh she should have at least bold red into the closet but she could not move now because she felt naked.
He closed the door behind him and walked toward her. Neriah’s heart was about to leave her chest. It was beating so loud that Neriah feared she’d be deafened by the sound.
She couldn’t do this with him. The first time was the biggest mistake of her life and she was lucky that Lyle had forgiven her... Her heart suddenly skipped as she realized that this was the first time since she stepped out of the ship that she was thinking about her Lyle. How could she? How could she have forgotten him for that long? She hated herself for this.
She was even more determined now. There was no way she was going to do that with this husband of hers. She’d be betraying her love for Lyle if she did that thing with this man again. She could not betray her love any further. Marrying someone else was betrayal enough, but sleeping with him?! No!! She wasn’t going to do it.
Neriah was so immersed in her own head that she did not realize that Barak was not even standing before her any longer. Not until the door opened again and some servants trooped in with trays of food in tow.
Embarrassed by her current state of dress— or undress... Neriah fumbled with her attire, but quickly realized that there was another bigger fabric covering her. She looked down at herself and realized that while she was busy thinking of how to reject him, Barak had taken off his robe and clothed her with it and that was why he stood there shirtless right now.
The fact made her feel even more embarrassed and her face flushed a bright pink as she shifted her gaze to where he stood near the bed, resting his frame upon its pole.
After arranging the food on table much rounder and bigger than the one they shared on the ship, the servants stepped out and it was just the two of them again.
"Come, sit." He calmly said as she himself took a seat in front of the food. "You haven’t eaten anything." He stressed and she stared at him for a while before taking a step closer to him and the food.
Maybe he really was not thinking of doing that with her, she reasoned as she also took a seat across from him.
"I would have loved for you to dive into Tragonian delicacies but since this is your first night here, I ordered the cooks to prepare dishes you are familiar with, for your comfort. You can begin trying out Tragonian food tomorrow." He explained as he personally dished out the food for them.
Neriah wondered if she was supposed to give a response to his words, then she decided it was better to keep her mouth shut. One word would lead to two and two would lead to more, which would mean an argument. And as much as it gave her some kind of fiery sense of power whenever she exchanged words and bantered with him, she would rather eat tonight and quickly go to sleep.
He placed her plate before her, "Rice seasoned with coconut juice and sweetened with fresh corn, with tomato and black pepper sauce, and chicken. It was one of the dishes I had in Avelah. I personally loved the smell of the coconut in the rice." He spoke again. "Go on, eat." He urged and Neriah had no strength to even say anything, she was still embarrassed from earlier. All she wanted was to fill her stomach quickly and go to sleep before they had any reason to enter into an argument tonight.
She had a lot of things she wanted to ask about this palace, a lot of things she was curious about, and even more things she wanted to do when she received answers to the questions she had to ask. But being in that nightdress even though she was draped in a huge robe now, was still making her think weird things could happen.
