The Dragon Prince's Bride -
Chapter 78. Winged Unicorns.
Chapter 78: 78. Winged Unicorns.
"They are saying," he stared and she hummed in anticipation, "that prince Barak has brought back an elven goddess for wife. Long live the Crown princess." He explained and lords her face was instantly stained with a brilliant shade of red. Her eyes glittered in the night and her lips pressed together as she tried to hide her excitement at the words he had spoken.
"Well," she began, trying to hide her smile, "You barbarians have a good eye for beauty." she cleared her throat and tossed a lock of her hair over her shoulders with the back of her hands.
"I guess I can bestow them with a gracious smile. These poor people have never seen fair beauty before." She smiled and lifted her right hand and began to wave graciously like a queen greeting her people. Giving them that big beautiful princess smile.
Barak couldn’t help but chuckle and watch as she beautifully displayed her princess-side as they advanced into the great gates of Trago. She loved to be praised, he had learnt that a long time ago. And seeing her like this now made him really want to pat her head and kiss her plump cheeks... She was cute, this wife of his.
Neriah was quickly noticing that the people she had seen so far were all dressed normally. No one was dressed with just animal skin wrapped around their private parts. But still, she knew better than to let her guard down. She was sure once they stepped into the walls. She’d see things that would make her which she were blind.
At least that was what she expected... But her expectations were quickly being shattered. Not one person! Not one person had her eyes caught wearing anything less than a cloth.
They were inside the walls and men were beating drums, women and children were dancing. Of course they were all dark-skinned people but the problem was where were the people who were supposed to be dressed in animal skins?!
A man dressed in a black decorated coat stood in front of them and Neriah could tell he was either a noble man or he worked in the royal palace... Or maybe both. He was saying somethings to them and bowing his head but she could not hear shit!
"He is the royal butler. To be precise, he is my father’s butler." Barak, who could see the confusion on her face, whispered the words into her ear. Her eyes opened with understanding as she mouthed a silent oh. "He is extending his welcome." He explains further.
Neriah was already shocked to hear that they had a royal butler!! She had not expected that from barbarians. But what was more shocking was the composure and grace of the man. He was chic. With long silver hair packed in a low ponytail, light brown eyes and a golden smile.
He was a shade lighter than Barak and Bashan, although he seemed older than both men too. He seemed to be over 700 years old, Neriah guessed.
"Neriah! He greets you." Barak pulled her attention back to their current situation.
""She does not understand Tragish Anhil. Speak in common language she will understand."" Barak was speaking to the man. Neriah could tell they were talking about her, but she knew not what they spoke of. And she was curious. So curious that she was suddenly determined to learn the language!
One thing she had forgotten was that she would not be needing it since she was planning on running away with her lover.
"Ah, forgive me, Your Highness." The man spoke to her and she smiled brightly as he had spoken in a language she understood, "I was saying welcome to Trago, I am Anhil Roman, the royal butler. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, oh beauty of Avelah." The man bowed to her and Neriah’s smile widened even more.
"I believe it is the custom of the Avelah’s to kiss their royalty on the back of the hand?" He stretched forth his hand, politely asking for hers and although he was correct, it only applied to nobles. And considering she wasn’t certain he was a noble, she wasn’t supposed to oblige him.
But when he was asking her so politely and staring at her with those eyes like she was really a goddess, how could she refuse?
Gently, she placed her gloved hand in his own and he took it to his lips and pressed a kiss there. "It is a pleasure to meet you too, Anhil. I am in your care." She gracefully spoke like the princess she was.
He smiled at her before moving away from her. He had switched back to speaking Tragish, much to Neriah’s dismay. The drums were still sounding and chants were ongoing when all of a sudden, two beautiful golden chariots appeared in the air! And that was not all, leading each of the chariots were two huge white, winged unicorns!!
Unicorns!!! Not just any kind! But winged unicorns!!!
Her heart was about to leave her throat! She had never expected that they would have chariots to begin with and now what? Not even a normal horse but a unicorn? A flying unicorn?!
She itched! She was itching so bad to touch them. She wanted to stroke them. She wanted to ride them!!
Barak’s eyes shifted to his tiny wife beside him. He felt her hold on his arm tighten. He had expected she would be surprised about a lot of things when she finally reached Trago based on the fact that she had been misinformed all her life.
But this... This expression upon her face at the moment was just too adorable. Her face and ears were flushed, her eyes looked like they were about to pop out of their sockets, her lips were parted in awe and he could see the fast pulse at her neck.
She was excited, he could tell. She liked what she saw. In fact he could tell she wished to touch the mare. Lords! She could be so adorable at times like these. Why couldn’t she be like this all the time? Why did she have to lie and cheat and pretend all the time?
The chariots landed and the king was ushered into one and the couple was ushered into the other, while horses were provided for the nights and maids.
Neriah had a goal now, she didn’t want to seem like a little girl who had never seen a winged unicorn before, so she was going to keep her composure. Later, she’d find out where the unicorns were kept and then she’d make her way there and play with them to her heart’s content.
Once again, she was forgetting she was supposed to escape with her lover.
Silently, she sat down in the chariot across from her husband. She was dying to stick her head out the window, but one she did not know if it was safe and two sheep did not want to look desperate and unrefined.
So she remained seated with her hands on her lap, biting her bottom lip over and over again.
Barak could tell what she was thinking even without her saying a word, so he opened the window and stuck his head out, "It feels good to breathe in the air of Trago." He muttered to himself as he drew in a deep breath and let it out.
Neriah looked at him and bit her lips harder, trying to stop herself from speaking but she could not, "Is that safe? That is also not very dignified of you..." She paused. "Sticking your head out of a carriage like a child." She scoffed.
He brought his head back into the carriage and stared at her, causing her to suddenly avoid his eyes, counting some things on the roof of the carriage.
"Sometimes, it is alright to let the child in us take over." He shrugged and then added, "You can look out the window if you wish. It is safe."
She dropped her eyes and stared into his, "The view is impeccable from up here." He smiles and it had been a long time since she noticed the dimple on his cheek. That one on the left was still as deep as ever.
He moved his head back to the window and stuck his head out again.
"Well, just this once then." She muttered with a smile. "But if anything happens to my head, I’ll have yours." She warned him as she slid close to the window.
"Still after my head, I see?" He chuckled, but she did not hear him for her head was already out the window.
"Woahhhh." Neriah gasped as he was right; the view from up here was beautiful. "But where are the small huts? And dirty people?" She asked herself as she squinted her eyes to see clearly but she just could not find it.
According to the stories she had read, the people of Trago still dressed in animal skin, lived in huts and cooked in a big pot outside.
Nobody told her about the beautiful structures, the lovely landscape she was seeing and the well dressed people! What is going on? Did she really get educated backwards? Was everything she knew about these people a lie?
"No. I am sure it just looks like this from above." She said to herself. "Yes, that must be it. A_and the people. They brought out their best attires because their king is arriving today. I am certain on normal days they wear animal skin. There is no way I had bad education!" She concluded.
But that aside, she enjoyed her ride. And also, he was right... The palace was on a high hill. She could see it from where she was seated. But still, even from a distance it looked too beautiful to be a palace!

Hey guys, from now till Neriah learns to speak Tragish well, I’ll be using two quotation makes and italic font to indicate words in Tragish. Like this; "" How are you?"" I wish there were other fonts allowed on NovelFire. But this is all we can work with for now.
And also, slide into the comment section to see the image of the unicorns and the golden carriage.
